今日は久方ぶりにサンシャインを浴びることができました。
こうして毎日曇りと雨に閉ざされていると、太陽の光が嬉しくてなりません。
とにかく貴重な太陽光浴びるために外に出ました。
数週間ぶりに見たオレンジに輝く日の入り。
息子にとっても貴重な瞬間で、私とのツーショット撮影のために3秒しか時間を割いてくれませんでした。
めったにない事は続けて起こるものです。
今夕の私の作ったヴィーガンスープとパスタが息子の評定で、魔女クラス(最高ランク)をいただきました。これもはじめてのことでした。

そうすると風邪をひかないとか。
もちろん手洗いを励行したほうが効果的面なはずですが、
子供の頃、ゆずのお風呂に入ったことを思い出しました。
そこで今夜は数十年ぶりにゆずの湯。
バスタブは1人専用なので贅沢な使い方です。

そして夕食後になると天気予報どおりにその雨が雪に変わりました。
この季節最初の積雪です。
そういえば日本ではこの数日間、全国的な大雪に見舞われたと聞いています。
日本列島の上空の天気がそのまま偏西風のジェット気流に乗って丸一日の旅をしながらここ米国のノースウェストにたどりつくのではないかと以前から感じています。
そのような見解を専門家から聞いたことはありませんが。
私の素人感覚です。
だけどよく当たるんですよ。
寒波が列島を襲ったとなると、翌日にはこちらもその寒波に見舞われます。
逆に猛暑日となったときにはやはりその翌日、こちらも気温が上がるんです。
太平洋を挟んで、日米はお隣の国ですよね。
お天気が結びついていると、人の心まで結びつきそうだ、なんて言うのは穿った言い方すぎるでしょうか。
「一衣帯水」といった詩的表現で、日本海を経た列島と大陸のつながりにロマンを求めるのを否定はしません。
しかし太平洋を挟んだ遠距離が我々を離していたとしても、天候がつながっていると知っただけで連帯感が生まれるような気もします。
Today's walk started with a light drizzle.
When we left the house, I decided that it would be no big deal and headed for the mountain path with my son.
By the time we reached the entrance, it was pouring down heavy.
It was a serious downpour, which is rare in this region.

On the other hand, when there is a heat wave, the temperature rises the next day here.
Across the Pacific Ocean, Japan and the United States are neighboring countries, right?
Is it too much to say that when the weather is connected, the hearts of people are also connected?
I don't deny the romanticism of the connection between the archipelago and the continent via the Sea of Japan in poetic expressions such as "one garment, one water.
But even if the distance across the Pacific Ocean separates us, just knowing that the weather is connected seems to create a sense of solidarity.

ワシントン州とオレゴン州の多くの都心部の郡せは、レストランの営業がテイクアウトのみ許されています。
日本から最近進出してきたこのラーメン店、なかなか良かったです。
ラーメン党の皆様、ごめんなさい。
私はめったなことでラーメンは食べません。油が多いのと炭水化物過剰なゆえに健康上のバランスを欠いてしまうのです。うまいとばかりにスープを飲めば、消化にかなりの負担がかかり午後眠くもなります。
ただこの店は、ラーメンばかりでなく丼メニューもあります。
ヴィーガンの丼もあるため、娘たちも利用できます。
数ヶ月前はなかったきれいなテラスが完成していました。そこは屋外ですから飲食が許されています。
しかも暖房設備が整っていて落ち着いて食事ができます。
これまでは車内で掻き込むことしかできませんでしたが、今週はじめてテーブルでのランチにありつけて嬉しい気持ち。

はるか数キロ先の上空では黒い雨雲に覆われていて、
そこから滝のように降り注ぐ水の塊が、カーテンのように黒く地表に伸びているのが何カ所も見届けられます。
私のいる上空では比較的明るい空でも、あちらの方角は黒い雨雲に覆われているという現象を何度も目にしました。
また雪が降るときには、まず第一にEverret南部に降るとか、決まったパタンがあるようです。
ここシアトル地方は湖や入江が複雑に絡みあっていて山も多いために、少し距離が離れると気象が異なるし、その推移にも提携型があるように感じます。
天候から話が変わって、車の流れについてです。
高速5号線を南下すると、タコマまで通常なら40分ほどです。
現在の夕刻ならその倍ほどはかかるはずです。
ピュージェットサンド広域で、最も渋滞が激しい路線ですし。
ところがコロナのおかげで交通量はめっきり減っていて、高速道路上が駐車場になるほどの渋滞はここ最近ありません。
それでも渋滞を避けるため夕食を終えて夜の9時ごろに出かけようかと思います。

数日前の娘の問いかけ。
宮崎駿作の映画をこのところ見続けていて、その映画音楽に魅せられたらしい。
16〜 7年前にタコマでお会いした女性のことを思い出した。
この方は日本人でありながら流暢な英語で三味線を教えていらっしゃる。
連絡をとると、70代の年齢ながらも現役で教えていらっしゃると言う。
本日、娘とともにそのタコマにあるアカデミーにお邪魔した。
圧倒的な熱量を持った女性で、娘はたちまちにして虜にされたもよう。
三味線ばかりでなく、着付けや日本舞踊も教えてらっしゃるとのことで、そのクラスも受講することに。
これらのクラスは全て日本の伝統的な礼儀作法に則って教えられると言うもの。
「あの家に入った途端、日本に帰ってきたような感じがしたわ」とは、娘の印象。
今後は1時間余りを師匠の前で正座をしながら三味線の稽古に励む小さな撫子さん、がんばってね。
娘はその情熱をかける音楽・芸術を発見したようで、その喜びを爆発してるところを見て、厚いコロナの黒雲に閉ざされた隙間から漏れ出た光のように感じた。
この日はもちろん1日中雨で暗い雲に照らされた日中。
日の入りの時間にふと窓の外を見ると、オレンジ色の光が街路を照らしていた。
もしやと思って高台に出てみると、地平線辺りにだけ割れたような雲が連なり、そこでは光のページェントが織り成していた。

This was my daughter's question a few days ago.
She had been watching Hayao Miyazaki's movies for a while now and was fascinated by his music.
It reminded me of a woman I met in Tacoma sixteen or seven years ago.
She is Japanese and teaches shamisen in fluent English.
When I contacted her, she told me that she was in her 70s and still teaching.
Today, my daughter and I visited her at his academy in Tacoma.
She is an overwhelmingly passionate woman, and my daughter was immediately captivated by her.
I was told that she teaches not only shamisen, but also kimono dressing and Japanese dance, so we decided to take those classes as well.
All of these classes are taught in accordance with traditional Japanese etiquette.
As soon as we entered the house, my daughter felt like being back in Japan, that was my daughter's impression.
From now on, the little Natsuko will spend an hour or so sitting on the floor holding her knees in front of the master while practicing the shamisen.
I felt like a light leaking out from a gap closed by a thick corona black cloud when I saw her exploding with joy as she seemed to have discovered the music and art to which she is so passionate.
It was, of course, raining all day and the day was lit up by dark clouds.
At sunset, I looked out the window and saw an orange light illuminating the street.

サンフランシスコのベイエリア一帯は5つの郡(カウンティー)で今日からロックダウンが再開されました。すべての小売店は基本的に閉鎖が義務付けられ、レストランはテイクアウトのみが許されます。現在のところは、新年の明けまでの継続期間とされていますが、今後延長される可能性もあります。
このところ米国で急激にパンデミックが広がってきたことに対する緊急措置です。
私の住んでいるワシントン州ではロックダウンは免れているものの、引き続き建物許容
人数25%以下が義務付けられた制限内に置かれています。
これからクリスマスに向けて、小売店は一年で最も売り上げが期待できる掻き入れ時なのです。
それがゼロになるという事態に向き合わざるをえなくなりました。
小生も本日からサクラメントとサンフランシスコ行きを予定しており、すでに航空券、レンタカー、ホテルなどを予約していました。
当地に行ったとして、すべての店がクローズされていたら、食事さえもできないことになります。
Pricelineというサイトを通じてホテルやレンタカーを予約したのですが、そこでは良いディールを与えてくれる代わりに、どんなことがあっても変更やキャンセルは認められないと謳っています。
昨夜そのpricelineに連絡し、カルフォルニア知事の突然のロックダウン宣言で、やむなく計画を変更せざるを得ない旨を伝えました。すると、その担当者は電話口で私を待たせたまま、予約していたホテルと直接交渉したのちに、キャンセルを認めてくれたのです。
翌月のホテル予約まで含めて、3つのホテルと1つのレンタカー全てがキャンセル扱いとなりました。
パンデミックと言う非常事態に、通常ではありえない対応をしてくれたカスタマーサービスに感動しました。同時に経済的な損失からの開放感を味わいました。
今回の緊急ロックダウンで、全ての小売店の方々に、同様な解放と救済の道が開かれますように。

Now The San Francisco Bay Area is in a five-county (county) lockdown that resumed today.

This is an emergency measure in response to the recent rapid spread of the pandemic in the United States.
In my home state of Washington, the lockdown has been spared, but buildings will continue to be less than 25% of the number of permitted people is placed within the mandated limit.
From now on, the Christmas season is the time of year when retailers can expect to make the most sales in the year.
We are now forced to face the prospect of zero sales.
I'm going to Sacramento and San Francisco today, and I've already booked flights, car rentals, hotels, etc.

I booked my hotel and car rental through a site called Priceline, which claims to not allow changes or cancellations under any circumstances, in exchange for giving me a good deal.
I contacted the priceline last night and told them I had to change my plans due to the California governor's sudden declaration of lockdown. He kept me waiting on the phone and after negotiating directly with my hotel, he granted me the cancellation.
All three hotels and one rental car were cancelled, including my hotel reservation for the following month.
I was very impressed with the customer service, which was unusual for a pandemic emergency situation. At the same time, I experienced a sense of relief from the financial damage.
May this emergency lockdown pave the way for similar liberation and relief for all retailers.
