「大雨の音がするから」

列王記第一　18章41～46節

"エリヤはアハブに言った。「上って行って、食べたり飲んだりしなさい。激しい大雨の音がするから。」
そこで、アハブは食べたり飲んだりするために上って行った。エリヤはカルメル山の頂上に登り、地にひざまずいて自分の顔を膝の間にうずめた。
彼は若い者に言った。「さあ、上って行って、海の方をよく見なさい。」若い者は上って、見たが、「何もありません」と言った。するとエリヤは「もう一度、上りなさい」と言って、それを七回繰り返した。
七回目に若い者は、「ご覧ください。人の手のひらほどの小さな濃い雲が海から上っています」と言った。エリヤは言った。「上って行って、アハブに言いなさい。『大雨に閉じ込められないうちに、車を整えて下って行きなさい。』」
しばらくすると、空は濃い雲と風で暗くなり、やがて激しい大雨となった。アハブは車に乗って、イズレエルへ行った。
主の手がエリヤの上に下ったので、彼は裾をたくし上げて、イズレエルの入り口までアハブの前を走って行った。"

(1)未だ見てないものを信じて〜「飲み食いしなさい」(41)

①飢饉の終焉を預言したことば
3年半の期間、降雨なく、国には作物が育たない。
イスラエルにとり毎年の降雨量は死活問題。

②大雨の音が聞こえるまでの信仰
神を求めるものは神の存在とまたその応答と信じていなくてはならない。
"信仰がなければ、神に喜ばれることはできません。神に近づく者は、神がおられることと、神がご自分を求める者には報いてくださる方であることを、信じなければならないのです。"
ヘブル人への手紙　11章6節

(2)その信仰に至ることが出来た理由

①主のことばを聞くことによる(18:1)＝観念論
真実の信仰は人の空想やまた人の与えるフィクションから始まらない。
聖書の言葉に耳を傾けることによる

②主の言葉を行うことによる(17:2-5、17:8-9)＝経験論
ヤコブ1:22-23

⑶信仰の祈りが事を成就させた秘密

①沈潜した祈り〜「自分の顔を膝の間にうずめた」
地上のユダヤ人の祈り姿勢とは異なる。
主イエスの教えに通じるものがある
「隠れたところにおられるあなたの父に祈りなさい「(山上の垂訓)

②執拗な祈り〜「7度繰り返しなさい」(18:43)
「何もありません」との失望する報告にも耐え続けた祈りであった。

(結論)
祈りは嘆願、願望、執り成しから始まる。
やがて長時間の格闘を経て神との同じ立場や見地に至る。
そこは永遠者との合一の世界であり、祈りの極地である。
主イエスの夜を徹した祈り。
モーセのシナイ山での40日40夜の祈り。

カリフォルニアでビジネス再開

いつもの通りにUS Bankのドライブスルーに並んでいると、窓の向こうから銀行員が建物の入り口を指して手招きしている。

そして店内に入ることができるとアナウンスしてきた。

ところが同じUSbankでもベルビューにある8thの所では、店内に入る事はおろかドライブスルー自体がなくて、空打ってしまったのが昨日のこと。

銀行員によれば先週月曜から店内への顧客入店が可能となったそうです。ところがこのポリシーはすべての支店が同じではなく、あちこちでのばらつきがあるようです。
レントンでそれが許されてるのはこのお店ぐらいしかないとか。

カリフォルニアの事情も友人から聞きました。

これまでロックダウンされていたカルフォルニアのほとんどの郡では、明日から小売店への入店が許されるんだそうです。

ところがサンフランシスコ市を抱えている郡では、それが「部分的」にしか許容されていないとか。
美容店・理容店の場合、店の外で営業することだけが明日から認められたとのこと。

「お店の外」といっても大きな玄関口を抱えているお店は少なく、「歩道に椅子を並べてカットしていいよ」と言ってるようなもの。シャンプーボールや鏡などは使えないまま。
ほとんどの店ではそれでは営業ができないのが現状です。

カリフォルニアではすでにロックダウンが5ヶ月間以上続いています。

前進と言うには憚られるほどの小さなものです。
暗闇に多少の穴が開けられたと言うものでしょうか。

先週のオレゴントリップから帰り、日没の時間がかなり変わっていることに日々驚いています。
夏至の頃は9時40分だったものが、今や7時40分ごろとなっています。これに気づかず昨夜は日の入りの瞬間を見逃してしまいました。

"戦車隊長たちはヨシャファテを見ると、「あれがイスラエルの王に違いない」と思い、彼と戦おうとして取り囲んだ。ヨシャファテが助けを叫び求めたので、主は彼を助けられた。神は彼らを、彼から引き離された。
戦車隊長たちは、彼がイスラエルの王ではないことを知ると、彼を追うことをやめて引き返した。
そのとき、ある一人の兵士が何気なく弓を引くと、イスラエルの王の胸当てと草摺の間を射抜いた。王は戦車の御者に言った。「手綱を返して、私を陣営から出させてくれ。傷を負ってしまったから。」"

As I stood in line at the US Bank drive-thru as usual, a banker beckoned me through the window, pointing to the entrance of the building.

He then announced that I could enter the store.

However, the 8th Street in Bellevue, which is also a US bank branch, didn't have a drive-thru, so I struck out yesterday.

According to the banker, customers were allowed to enter the store last Monday.However, this policy is not the same at all branches, and there seems to be some variation here and there.
This is the only one store in Renton that allows it.

I also heard about the situation in California from my friends.

Most of the counties in California that have been on lockdown will be allowed to open their retail stores tomorrow.

However, in the county that hosts the city of San Francisco, that's only "partially" allowed, I'm told.
In the case of beauty and barber shops, they were only allowed to operate outside the shop from tomorrow.

Even if you say "outside the shop," few shops have large entrance hall and it's like saying, "You can line up your chairs on the sidewalk and cut.Shampoo balls and mirrors remain unavailable.”
Most shops can't operate on that.

In California, the lockdown has already been going on for over five months.

It's too small to call it progress.
I guess you could say that there has been a little hole in the dark.

After returning from last week's Oregon trip, I am amazed daily at how much the sunset times have changed.
What used to be 9:40 on the summer solstice is now around 7:40.
I didn't notice this and missed the moment of sunset last night.

「青年は荒野をめざす」

僕は遠出しなくたっていいんだ。

歩いて行ける近所の公園まで散歩し、
あるいは自宅バルコニーで夕食をする。

それだけで立派なアウトドア・ライフを楽しめるんだ。
そして夕日を眺めることができたら、偉大な自然の造形美に感動する。

ところが若者はそのようなありきたりの日常では満足しないらしい。
「青年は荒野をめざす」とか言う題名の本があり歌があったような気がする。

オレゴンから戻って幾日もたたないうちに、
子供らが新たなキャンプへと旅立っていった。

自宅を出立したのが夜の10時半。
車を降りて山道に到着する頃には夜半を超えているでしょう。
そこからさらに1時間ほどのトレイルをマウントバイクで走る。

ヘッドランプがあるので道を踏み外す事はないと言う。
フクロウの声を聞きながら深夜の山道を滑走するのが爽快なのだと言う。
目的地に着いてから、テントを設営しなくてはならない。
そんな作業を真夜中の1時から2時にして何の楽しみとなるのか。

オジンには全く理解できない。
とにかくそこに2泊滞在する彼らの無事の帰還を祈っている。

"すると、主は彼の方を向いて言われた。
「行け、あなたのその力で。
あなたはイスラエルをミディアン人の手から救うのだ。
わたしがあなたを遣わすのではないか。」

ギデオンは言った。
「ああ、主よ。どうすれば私はイスラエルを救えるでしょうか。ご存じのように、私の氏族はマナセの中で最も弱く、
そして私は父の家で一番若いのです。」

主はギデオンに言われた。
「わたしはあなたとともにいる。
あなたは一人を討つようにミディアン人を討つ。」"
士師記　6章14～16節

I don't have to go far.

If I can walk to the nearest park with kids,
Or have dinner on the balcony, that’s enough to me.

That's how I can enjoy the great outdoor life.
And when I can watch the sunset, I'm impressed by the great natural beauty of nature.

Young people, however, are not satisfied with such a conventional life.
I think there is a book and a song called "A Young Man's Quest for the Wilderness".

Within a few days of our return from Oregon,
The kids left for a new camp.

It was 10:30 at night when they left our home.
It would be well past midnight by the time they got out of the car and reached the mountain trail.
From there they would ride the mounted bikes for another hour or so on the trail.

They have a headlamp that says They won't go off the road.
My daughter says it's exhilarating to go on the mountain trails late at night while listening to the owls.

When they arrive at their destination, they have to set up their tents.
What fun is there in doing that between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m.?

Old person like me couldn't understand it at all.
Anyway, l wish them a safe return for the two nights they'll be there.

“The LORD turned to him and said,
“Go in the strength you have
and save Israel out of Midian’s hand.
Am I not sending you?”

“Pardon me, my lord,”
Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel?
My clan is the weakest in Manasseh,
and I am the least in my family. ”

The LORD answered,
“I will be with you,
and you will strike down all the Midianites,
leaving none alive.”

コロナウィルス検査キット

初めてコロナウィルスの検査を受けました。

ワシントン州が無料で提供しているプログラムで、
誰もが以下のウェブサイトを使って登録すれば翌日に検査キットが配達されてきます。

「午後2時には届けるので、午後3時にはピックアップ出来るように指定の場所にキットを置いておいてください」と登録後のメッセージ。

つまり翌日にはテストを終えていた。
テストといっても綿棒で15秒間ほど鼻の中をぐるぐるとかき回し、その綿棒を試験管に入れるだけの簡単なもの。

数日後に検査結果がウェブ上で発表されるのだそうです。

検査の結果は後日発表します。

I was tested for the coronavirus for the first time.

It's a free program offered by the state of Washington.
Anyone can register using the following website and they will receive their test kit by the delivery the next day.

The message after registration says, "We'll deliver it at 2 p.m., so please leave the kit in the designated area so we can pick it up at 3 p.m.

That meant I had to finish the test the next day.
The test was a simple matter of swabbing the inside of my nose with a cotton swab for about 15 seconds and then putting the swab in the test tube.

The results of the test will be shown on the web in a few days.

湖で無人島まで泳ぎ渡る

ワシントン州南部に広がるセントヘレナ火山。
そのすぐ近くの山奥に広がっているColdwater Lake へ行ってきました。

この湖の縁を1周するように人がようやく通れる幅ほどの狭いトレイルが続いています。そこをマウントバイクで駆け進み、人がいないプライベートビーチを目指します。

早速湖に入ってみると名前ほど水は冷たくなく、泳ぐのに適していました。湖の中ほどにある無人島が目の前に見えます。

子供らはその無人島まで泳いで行こうかなんてことを話し合っているので、またまた老婆心を現した私は反対意見を伝えます。

ほとんど聞く耳を持たないまま、一人の家人が水に飛び込むとそのまま島を目指して泳ぎだしました。子供らも次々にそれに続きます。やむなく私も彼らの後追って泳がざるをえません。

距離にすると120-130メーターほどだと思います。
数キロ遠泳したことのある私自身は問題感じませんが、子供らがそれだけの距離を泳いだ記憶は無いのです。
もし途中で足でもつったら、
体力が尽きたら、
溺れたら、、、
と変な想像ばかりをしてしまうのです。

彼らは恐れる事もなくスイスイと無事に島までたどり着くと、私の到着を待たずにその島の頂上まで手足を使ってはい登っていました。

昨日は彼らがプールに飛び込むその高さを心配し、
そして今日は泳ぐ距離の長さを心配しました。

親の心配をよそに、
子供らは親の気がつかない間に成長し、
いつの間にか親を追い越してしまってるようです。

"一方、少年サムエルは、主にも人にもいつくしまれ、ますます成長した。"

The St. Helena Volcano spreads out in the southern part of Washington State.
We went to Coldwater Lake, which is located deep in the mountains near the volcano.

There is a narrow trail that circles the edge of the lake and is barely wide enough for a person to pass.We rode our bikes there to get to a private beach where there was no one there.

The water is not as cold as the name suggests, and it's a good place to swim.We could see an uninhabited island in the middle of the lake.

The kids were discussing the possibility of swimming to the uninhabited island, and I, again showing my old parentheses, spoke out against it.

Almost deafeningly, one of the family members jumped into the water and started to swim towards the island.One by one, the children followed suit.I had no choice but to swim after them.

There was about 120-130 meters.
I had swum a few kilometers before, so I didn't have a problem with it, but I couldn't remember any of the children swimming that far.

If they get a foot injury along the way.
If their strength is exhausted.
If they drown...
I couldn't help but imagine such things happened.

They didn't have to wait for me to arrive, they made it to the top of the island.

Yesterday I was worried about how high they would jump into the pool.
And today I worried about the length of the swim.

Despite my parents' concerns,
Children grow up without their parents' knowledge.
It seems to have overtaken their parent before I know it.

“And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.”
1 Sam. 2:26

冷泉プールに飛び込んで

夏休み第二弾はやはりオレゴン州の山奥にある天然プールへ。
Tamolitch Blue Pool。
Portlandから約2時間半の道のりを南西に向かう。

ここのプールがユニークな点は、これだけ広くてまた深遠なプールであるにも関わらず、どこからも流水の注入口がない点。

ホット・スプリングス(温泉)ではなくて、コールド・スプリングス(冷泉)です。付近の山々からの地下水脈を通った水が、このプールの底から湧き出しているのです。その数量たるや大したもので、いっぱしの川を形成しています。McKenzie River です。

昼前にここに到着したところ、既に数十人の人々がプールを取り囲んでいます。しかし誰もあえてその中に飛び込む人はいません。

「ボーイズたちはどこに行ったんだ」と娘に聞くと、既にあの高台に登っているとのこと。まさかあの上から飛び降りるつもりじゃないだろうなぁと見ていると、家人が見事に飛び込んだ。

その後カイが続こうとしているので、「やめろ！飛び込むなぁ〜！」と叫んだ。図らずもそんな絶叫が録画録音されてしまった(汗)。慌てふためく親バカの声を聞いてやってください(笑)。

その直前に崖の上から下を見下ろすと、想像以上に高く見えて文字通り私の足がすくんだのです。着水の打ち所が悪ければどんな怪我するか分からないし、また突然の冷水は心臓麻痺に至るかも知れない。

そんな老婆心むき出しの親心を露とも知らずに飛び込んでしまったボーイズたち。成功してみれば父親のできないことを完遂した男としてヒーロー扱いを受けていた。

私は水面0センチの地面から飛び込んでみました。
つ・め・た・い。

あまりの冷たさに数秒間も水につかることができず、すぐに岸に上がるのですが、皮膚はその時ジンジンとした痛みに襲われます。
その痛みが数秒後には火のような熱さに変っわたように感じました。こんなこと初めて経験しました。

水はどこまでも透き通っています。
そして温泉成分のようなミネラルを始めとした鉱物が水に溶け込んでいる事でしょう。

もう少しだけ耐えられるだけの水温だったら、多くの人に楽しんでもらえるに違いありません。

"エルサレムには、羊の門の近くに、

ヘブル語でベテスダと呼ばれる池があり、
五つの回廊がついていた。

その中には、病人、目の見えない人、足の不自由な人、
からだに麻痺のある人たちが大勢、横になっていた。"

"そこに、三十八年も病気にかかっている人がいた。
イエスは彼が横になっているのを見て、
すでに長い間そうしていることを知ると、
彼に言われた。「良くなりたいか。」

病人は答えた。「主よ。水がかき回されたとき、
池の中に入れてくれる人がいません。
行きかけると、ほかの人が先に下りて行きます。」

イエスは彼に言われた。
「起きて床を取り上げ、歩きなさい。」"

Our second summer vacation was also to a natural pool located deep in the mountains of Oregon.
Tamolitch Blue Pool.
It's about a two and a half hour drive southwest of Portland.

What makes this pool unique is that, despite being so large and deep, it has no inlet for running water from anywhere.

It's not a hot spring, but a cold spring.Water from the nearby mountains gushes out of the bottom of this pool through underground water veins. This water pool origins the McKenzie River.

When we arrived here before noon, there were already dozens of people surrounding the pool.But no one dares to jump into the pool.

When I asked my daughter where the boys went, she told me that they were already up on that high ground.As I watched, I didn't think they were going to jump off of that top, but surprisingly one of my family guy jumped in beautifully.

Kai then tried to follow, so I said, "Stop! Don’t jump in! I screamed.Unbeknownst to me, such a scream was recorded and recorded (sweat).Listen to the flustered parental idiot, lol.

Just before that, I looked down from the top of the cliff and it looked higher than I imagined it would be and it literally knocked me off my feet.

What if landed on the water in the wrong place, what kind of injury I would get, and the sudden cold water could lead to a heart attack.

The boys jumped into the water with no regard for the old parental love.When they succeeded, they were treated as a hero for completing what their father couldn't.

I jumped in from the ground 0 inches above the surface of the water.
It was soooo cold water.

It was so cold that I couldn't stay in the water for a few seconds, and I quickly made it to shore, but my skin was then hit with a zinging pain.
After a few seconds, the pain felt like it had turned to a fire-like heat.I had never experienced anything like this before.

The water is infinitely clear.
The water is crystal clear and there are minerals in the water, including minerals from the springs.

If the water was just a little bit warmer, many people would be able to enjoy it.

“Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [ ] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.”

米国に息づく日本文化

普段は予約しか受け付けていない人気日本食レストランもコロナ禍のせいでこの通りガラガラです。
店内で食事ができる分だけ良い方で、半分以上のポートランドのレストランはテイクアウトオーダーしか受け付けていないようです。

外のピクニックテーブルか、店内でもほんの限られた数のテーブルしか利用できないのです。

通常ならありえないことに、たった1人の私が座敷に通されました。

入り口からこの座敷までは、10メートルほどの距離です。
ところがマスクを持参していなかったことで店内に入ることが許されずに一旦は断られました。
車まで戻ってマスクを持ち再びレストランへ。
その店内の10メートルを歩くときだけマスクをかけました。
座敷内ではもちろんマスクは強要されません。

これはすごい形式至上主義のように見えます。
私から見たらそうでもお店から見たら固く「ノーマスク・ノーエントリー」のポリシーを死守していると顧客に訴える効果があります。自分の店が感染源となったと言う疑いを回避できるからです。

そこで抵抗感なく車までマスクを取りに行きました。

入店できないことを告げた着物姿のマネージャー日本人女性は「申し訳ございません」とほんとうにすまなさそうに腰を70度ほど曲げて丁寧な対応をしてくださいました。

もちろん私も丁寧に理解している旨を告げました。

ところで、もしこれが米国食レストランの場合を考えてしまうのです。
おそらく律儀に規則を固守する事はないでしょう。
片目でウィンクしながら、「本当はマスクしないと入れないんですけどねー、急いで私について来てちょうだい」だなんて言ってその座敷に素早く案内してくれたことでしょうね。

これは上下や優劣の差を言ってるのではなく単なる文化の違いです。
運ばれてきた料理の品数や細かなところに手数をかけたところも、細に入り微に入り工夫を凝らす日本文化の表れです。
この他にも「お通し」ですと言って、枝豆3つがわざわざ小鉢に乗せて出されて来ました。熱いおしぼりが出されたので、それで顔を拭いたのは言うまでもありません。
米国人がそれを見ると、「ナプキン」で顔拭いていると言って笑われてしまうのですが。

私は、日本人として生まれその文化を身に付けていることを誇りと思います。同時にその文化のままで生活出来るアメリカという自由が尊重されている国を誇りに感じています。

"ナオミは言った。
「ご覧なさい。あなたの弟嫁は、
自分の民とその神々のところに帰って行きました。
あなたも弟嫁の後について帰りなさい。」

ルツは言った。
「お母様を捨て、別れて帰るように、仕向けないでください。
お母様が行かれるところに私も行き、
住まれるところに私も住みます。
あなたの民は私の民、あなたの神は私の神です。

あなたが死なれるところで私も死に、そこに葬られます。
もし、死によってでも、
私があなたから離れるようなことがあったら、
主が幾重にも私を罰してくださるように。」"

The popular Japanese restaurant that usually only accepts reservations was almost empty, as you can see here because of the corona disaster.

It's good enough if you can eat inside, and more than half of Portland's restaurants seem to only accept take-out orders.

There are only a limited number of picnic tables available outside or even inside.

Normally this would not be the case, but I as only guest by myself was led into the sitting Tatami room.

The distance between the entrance and this sitting Tatami room was about 10 meters.

However, I wasn't allowed to enter the restaurant because I hadn't brought my mask with me and was refused to be served.
I walked back to my car and went back into the restaurant with my mask.

I only put my mask on when I walked 10 meters inside the restaurant.
Of course, no masks are forced inside the sitting Tatami room.

This seems like a great formality.

From my point of view, it may seem so, but from the shop's point of view, it has the effect of appealing to customers that they are adhering to a firm "no mask, no entry" policy.This is because it avoids the suspicion that your store has become a source of infection.

So I went to my car to get my mask without resistance.

When the manager, a Japanese woman in a kimono, that I couldn't enter the store, she bent her waist about 70 degrees in a very apologetic manner and politely said, "I'm very sorry.”

I, of course, politely told her that I understood.

By the way, I can't help but think about what would happen if this were an American restaurant.

They probably wouldn't be adhering to the rules in a disciplined manner.
She would have winked at me with one eye and said, "You should have to wear mask to get in, but that’s OK, just follow me” and led me to that room quickly.

I'm not talking about hierarchy or superiority, but simply a cultural difference.
The number of dishes brought to me and the amount of time and effort put into the details are all signs of the Japanese culture that goes into the details.

In addition, only three edamame beans were served in a small bowl, which they called "OTOUSHI", appetizers.
Needless to say, I wiped my face with the hot oshibori served to me.
When Americans saw that, they would laugh at me, saying that I was wiping my face with a "napkin".

I am proud to be born and to have acquired that culture as a Japanese.At the same time, I am proud of America, a country that respects the freedom that I can live in that Japanese culture.

“Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.”

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

盗難事件の多いこの国で

マウンテンバイクをホテルのレーリングに鎖でつなぎとめた。
娘は安全性に問題があると言ってホテルの部屋に搬入しろと言う。

私は問題を感じないのでそのままにしてある。
鎖は、自転車のフレームとレーリングにつながっているので大丈夫だ、と。しかもロビーの入り口すぐ前に置かれている。

それでも娘は、特性のカッターで鎖が斬られてしまうこともあると言い張る。

そのような彼女の慎重で繊細なマインドは母親譲り。

特に米国のような国にあっては、それぐらいの犯罪に対しての警戒心があった方が良いのかもしれない。

皆さんはどう思われますか？
私か、彼女の考え方に賛同されるでしょうか。

I chained my mountain bikes to the hotel railing.
My daughter told me it’s not enough security and to take it in the hotel room.

I don't see the problem so I left them there.
The chains are connected to the bike frame and the railing, so it's fine. Also they are placed right in front of the lobby entrance.

Still, my daughter insists that the chains can be cut by the characteristic cutter.

Such is her cautious and sensitive mindset that she has inherited from her mother.

Especially in a country like the U.S., it might be better to have that level of vigilance against crime.

東京とシアトルは同じ気温だった

今日は暑い日だった。
その上湿度もかなりあったようで息子と森の中をハイキングをしていても、空気が熱く、疲れも感じて早く室内に戻りたくなった。

スマホで気温を確かめてみると摂氏34度。
同時刻の東京の気温も同じ34度。
これで東京の皆さんと同じ暑さを経験できたようで嬉しく感じた。

さらに湿度の表示があった。
シアトル23%。
東京75%だって
ヒエ〜ッ、3倍の湿度の差。

東京人の苦労を体験したつもりになれたのは約1分間のみ。
まだまだ甘かったですねz

日本の皆さん、仕事より健康の方が大事です。
ご自愛ください。

It was a hot day.
On top of that, there was quite a bit of humidity and even though I was hiking with my son in a wood, the air was hot and I felt tired and wanted to get back indoors as soon as possible.

I checked the temperature on my phone and it was 34 degrees Celsius.
The temperature in Tokyo at the same time was the same 34 degrees.
I felt happy that I could now experience the same heat as everyone else in Tokyo.

There was also a humidity reading.
It was 23% in Seattle,
and 75% in Tokyo.

Heehee, three times the difference in humidity.

I believed I could experience the hardships of Tokyo people only for about a minute.
I was still naive.

People of Japan, your health is more important than your work.
Please take care of yourself.

75回目の終戦記念日

75年目の終戦記念日を迎えました。

国民的一大行事として我々日本人はこの8月15日を特別な思いを持って過ごします。
ところが米国人は、75年前に米国と日本との間に苛烈な戦闘があったことを知っていても、それがこの日に終結したとする人はあまりいないでしょう。

その後も米国は朝鮮戦争、ベトナム戦争、アフガン戦争、イラク戦争など多くの戦闘を起こし、戦争に巻き込まれ、巻き込んでてきました。
現在も世界中に軍隊を配備して準戦闘状態にある米国からすれば、日本と戦争を終了したことは特別に記憶することのない、1つの過ぎ去った歴史に過ぎないのです。

一方日本は開闢以来、蒙古襲来などはありましたが日本全土にわたって戦火の被害を受けた初めての戦争であり、また初めて負けた戦争でした。

そしてその負け方があまりにもひどい。
全国の主な都市と言う都市が焼夷弾によって壊滅され焦土とされました。広島と長崎には原子爆弾がそれぞれ落とされました。

あそこまで徹底した民間人に対する絶滅作戦は、人道上許されない米国の罪です。

今日でも戦争終結のために原爆投下がやむを得ない選択であったと正当化する米国人がほぼ半数ほどいるのだそうです。

どうしてそう考えるかと言えば、中高生時代にそのように歴史教科書で教えられているからです。

一方、日本がアジア諸国に侵攻した行為をナチスドイツと同様の悪魔的所業であると断罪した東京裁判史観のもと、自分たち日本の戦争行為は全て悪であったと考える日本人も多くいます。
日本人もまたそのような自虐史観を歴史教科書から教えられているからです。私自身ががかつてはそのような洗脳の中に生きていました。

本日の夕焼けを見ながら、学ぶとは、人が生きる上で必須のものであることを改めて確認しました。
そうでなければ他者が与える思想信条に染まるほかないのです。

自由と独立、不羈の精神を保つために、
私たちは学び続けなくてはなりません。

"イエスは、ご自分を信じたユダヤ人たちに言われた。
「あなたがたは、わたしのことばにとどまるなら、
本当にわたしの弟子です。
あなたがたは真理を知り、真理はあなたがたを自由にします。」

彼らはイエスに答えた。
「私たちはアブラハムの子孫であって、
今までだれの奴隷になったこともありません。
どうして、『あなたがたは自由になる』
と言われるのですか。」

イエスは彼らに答えられた。
「まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。
罪を行っている者はみな、罪の奴隷です。

奴隷はいつまでも家にいるわけではありませんが、
息子はいつまでもいます。
ですから、子があなたがたを自由にするなら、
あなたがたは本当に自由になるのです。"

We have celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War.

As a major national event, we Japanese hold a special place in our hearts on August 15.
But while Americans may be aware of the fierce fighting between the United States and Japan 75 years ago, few would notice of ending it on this day.

Since then, the U.S. has been involved in and embroiled in many battles, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Afghan War, and the Iraq War, and so on.

From the perspective of the United States, which still deploys troops around the world and is in a state of semi-combat, the end of the war with Japan is just a passing history that is not especially memorable.

On the other hand, since the beginning of its history, Japan was faced the first war that was ravaged by fire all over Japan, and the first war that was lost.

And the way it was lost was so bad.
Major cities across the country were razed to the ground by incendiary bombs.Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It is an unforgivable crime for the U.S. to go to such an barbarous invading acts to exterminate the civilian population.

Even today, almost half of Americans justify the atomic bombings as a compelling choice to end the war.

The reason why they believe this way is because that is what they are taught in history textbooks when they are in middle and high school.

On the other hand, based on the historical perspective of the Tokyo Trials, which condemned Japan's invasion of Asian countries as a satanic act similar to that of Nazi Germany, there are many Japanese who believe that Japan's war actions were all evil.

This is because the Japanese have also been taught such a view of self-defeating history from history textbooks.I myself used to live through such a brainwashing in the past.

As I watched the sunset today, I was reminded that learning is an essential part of human life.
Otherwise, we have no choice but to be steeped in the ideological beliefs that others give us.

We must remain free, independent and unencumbered.
We have to keep learning.

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

They answered him,
“We are Abraham’s descendants
and have never been slaves of anyone.
How can you say that we shall be set free?”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you,
everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family,
but a son belongs to it forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John. 8:31-36
