【Daisuke Kiba】~Performer~

Daisuke Kiba is a kokyū player from Japan. The kokyū is a traditional Japanese string instrument and is played with a bow. Similar to shamisen, the kokyū traditionally has 3 strings. But look at the picture of Daisuke Kiba holding his kokyū. It was 4 strings! That's because he invented his own 4 stringed kokyū by adding a bass string.

He has appeared in educational TV programs on the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), gone on national tours, and participated in movie soundtracks. Now, he is spreading his success overseas to America.

【Main Stage Performances】~Performers~

We have many performances on stage this year! So many you won't be able to get away from the stage.

On Saturday, we will kick off the event with CHI-KA singing J-POP! Following her will be a performer from Japan, Mr. Daisuke Kiba on the kokyū! Stay in tune for a post about him soon.

Along the same lines of traditional Japanese, Japanese Classical Martial Arts will take the stage at noon. Going back to music, Uguisu-kai will sing and dance for us.

Then get ready to feel the beat when Seattle Kokon Taiko takes the stage! Seattle Kokon Taiko (SKT) is Washington’s first performing taiko ensemble. SKT is based in the local Japanese American community and has performed at schools, arts festivals, street fairs, community programs, corporate events and in concert throughout Washington and Oregon.
From 2:30 pm, the Japanese Men's Chorus Group from Evergreen Glee Club will be singing.
Interested in karate? Washington Shotokan Association will give us a demonstration on stage from 3:15pm. To finish the day off, Songs of Hope will be singing "Wish Upon A Star" with all the kids near the stage. After all, we are celebrating Tanabata.

Sunday will have a completely different line up, but just as exciting!

To start the day, Okinawa Creative Dance will dance to a couple of songs, followed by Okinawa Taiko by OKK Chijinshuu.

ArtRise Dance will continue the powerful flow with their energetic dances!

Can't get enough dancing? Dance LEO will come right after. Dance LEO started as a jazz dance class 17 years ago. In 2011, they performed two types of dances, a jazz dance and YOSAKOI for the first time, at an event.
Want even more dancing? Shiori will be performing belly dancing to entertain the crowd.

Then the main event for Sunday comes. A COSPLAY CONTEST! We can't believe this is actually happening again this year! The cosplay contest will be hosted by Sakura-Con and we're expecting a bigger turn around than last year.

After the cosplay contest, we will be going back to more traditional Japanese performances. KIMONO ART will have a performance again this year. This year, they will be expressing the beauties of Japan. Following the kimono performance will be Mr. Daisuke Kiba for a second performance. Anyone who misses his performance on Saturday will have another chance to see and listen to him playing the kokyū.

To finish off the two day event, we will have The School of TAIKO take the stage to powerfully close the curtains and send us off to next year.

The schedule for the performances can be found on our website.

Don't forget to set alarms on your phones so you won't miss any of these great performances!

【Tomo Angie Hoku】~Japan Fair 2017 MC~

Japan Fair is proud to announce that Tomo "Angie" Hoku will be returning as our MC for the Main Stage!

Tomo (AKA Angie) has been a bilingual emcee for many years in both Hawaii and Seattle, doing various events involving Hawaiian music, hula, information technology and/or food & hospitality industries. She also works as an event promoter: she has done many Hawaiian- and Japanese-related events, and more recently is supporting Bollywood (Indian) events in the Puget Sound area. She also consults with local restaurants, training staff to provide the best in customer service.

Tomo works freelance as an interpreter and translator as well as a tour coordinator, and is also a regular contributor as a travel writer for a Japanese magazine. And as if those gigs aren't keeping her busy enough, she occasionally (and secretly?) appears as Clara, the famous Ivar's Dancing Clam.

Tomo is very excited to be part of Japan Fair 2017. Please come talk stories with her in Japanese, English, Hawaiian, Hindi or "Mollusk".

【Community Table】

An addition from last year's fair, we are having a Community Table section in the lobby for the advertisement of our community!

Across the entrances of the main hall, there will be tables set up where many flyers will be placed. Everyone is welcome to stop by the tables and grab a flyer or two. For anyone who has a flyer to distribute, you may leave your flyers on the table!

Specifically at the Community Tables, we will be selling two items. The first item is ENMA t-shirts! ENMA is the organization that ran Aki-Matsuri for 18 years before Japan Fair. Get a t-shirt before they run out!
The second item is a book on remote nursing by Kiyoko Kakutani. Nursing for your elderly parents in Japan is becoming a larger problem with the older generation rapidly growing in population. However, Kiyoko's book explains the possibilities of nursing for your parents remotely.

As you come into Japan Fair or as you leave, please stop by and have a peek at what the community tables have lined up!

【Mini Demo Stag...
【Mini Demo Stage】

Across from the Main Stage this year, there will be two mini stages where several demonstrations will happen, similar to last year.

On the first stage, there will be Tea Ceremonies happening throughout both days. Saturday's Tea Ceremony demonstrations will be hosted by Chanoyu Seattle Omotesenke-Ryu. Demonstration times are at 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 3:45 p.m.
The Tea Ceremony demonstrations for Sunday will be hosted by Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association. Demonstration times will be at 11:15 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., and 3:15 p.m.
Omotesenke and Urasenke, thinking they sound similar? There's a reason for that! Both Omotesenke and Urasenke are two of the three families that consider themselves founded by Sen Rikyū. Omote means "front" in Japanese while ura means "back". No, they aren't opposites or enemies of each other. They have these names because the tea houses faced the front street or the back street.

On Mini Stage 2, ikebana and bonsai demonstrations will be happening on both days. Saturday's ikebana demonstration will happen from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by the bonsai demonstration from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday's demonstrations will be switched with bonsai going from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m followed by ikebana from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Don't get them confused!
The ikebana demonstrations will be held by Ikebana International while the bonsai demonstrations will be held by Puget Sound Bonsai Association (PSBA).

We are very grateful for all of the organizations hosting a demonstration to show everyone the traditional Japanese culture!

Do you know Pepper? No, not salt and pepper! Pepper the robot! He’s a human-shaped robot that can talk, react, and interact with humans!

He’s not an ordinary robot either. Pepper is able to perceive your emotions! Isn’t that amazing?

Pepper will be coming to Japan Fair 2017!

Pepper the robot can be seen in many different places in Japan. Of course, Softbank stores have Pepper since Softbank Robotics is the one that invented Pepper. Aside from their own stores, Pepper can be found in banks and many other stores. Recently, Pepper has even become part of Japanese families in their homes. Since Pepper is able to perceive emotions, his personality changes based on the family and their interactions with him. If you talk to him often and treat him like a family member, he’ll have a lively, outgoing personality.

When Pepper comes to Japan Fair 2017, it will be his first time coming to the Pacific Northwest! Besides from having a booth where you can interact with Pepper, he will be hosting a seminar with the Pepper Engineer Team. The seminar will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 3:30 p.m. and on Sunday, July 9th at 12:00 p.m. Come by on either day to learn more about Pepper.

Don’t miss your chance to talk and interact with Pepper! And don’t forget to give him a warm welcome so he comes back to Seattle! Look, Pepper’s calling for you to come, too!

【Sake One & Hakutsuru】~Market Place Booth~

Did you see the Benefit Dinner post earlier? At the dinner, there will be complimentary Hakutsuru Sake offered by Saké One.

We are very grateful for both of their support.

The sake that Sake One has offered at the dinner is Hakutsuru Nishiki Junmai Daiginjo. This sake has won the Monde Selection Grand Gold Quality Award for the past 7 years from 2009 to 2016.

Sake One started as an importer of sake from Japan in the 90s, until soon becoming a sake brewery as well. Now, Sake One is one of only six sake brewery in America, and also imports the finest sake from Japan.

Both companies will have a booth at Japan Fair, so stop by and have a taste of their sake!

**************************************************************

Hakutsuru Saké:

Japan's #1 Selling Brand
Founded in 1743, Hakutsuru is one of the oldest saké producers in Japan and is located in the Nada district of Kobe,  a leading saké production area known throughout Japan. The name Hakutsuru means “white crane”. The Japanese crane’s reserved character and graceful appearance, and the cultural association of seeing the crane in flight as an auspicious sign, made the crane an ideal symbol to represent the excellent quality of Hakutsuru’s saké.

SakéOne:

Founded in 1992 and based in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, SakéOne is both a craft saké producer as well as an importer of premium Japanese saké. Our Oregon Craft brands include Momokawa, G Saké and our flavor-infused Moonstone saké. We currently represent six breweries from Japan including the category leader Hakutsuru Saké Brewing from Kobe. SakéOne will continue to add producers from a variety of prefectures in order to represent the most diverse and comprehensive saké portfolio in the trade. Our mission is to raise the national consciousness relative to premium saké, and to provide our customers outstanding and consistent products and service.

Today's the first day of summer! But look at this cold weather in Seattle and Bellevue. It's barely even 60 degrees out, and not to mention it's raining... So why not go to Kizuki Ramen to warm up? The hot, authentic Japanese ramen is sure to make you forget about the cold weather.

Their newest one will open soon in Bellevue Square! They aren't just in Washington, but have also expanded to Oregon, Illinois, and Indiana. There's even locations in Taiwan and Australia!

Enter the raffle drawing at Japan Fair 2017 for a chance to win a gift card for the authentic Japanese Ramen at Kizuki Ramen!

**************************************************
Kizuki Ramen a.k.a Kukai Ramen starts in Tokyo back in 2002, and started its Ramen adventure in United States in 2012.

Kizuki’s goal is to bring the most Authentic Japanese Ramen to United States. It took Kizuki about one and a half years to open its first U.S. restaurant in Bellevue, WA because it insisted on bring the authentic seasoning from Japan to U.S which a lot of the seasonings were new to the FDA at the time. We believe in “Making the Most Authentic Ramen by Japanese Product”

The Kizuki miso comes from Hokkaido prefecture. Kizuki flavors its shoyu ramen with ingredients from Yamaguchi, a region known for its soy sauce.

Kizuki pays close attention to each and every bowl of ramen to ensure quality and authenticity.

【Music of Remembrance】~Community Friends Booth~

Founded in 1998, Music of Remembrance (MOR) fills a unique cultural role in Seattle and throughout the world by remembering the Holocaust through music with concert performances, educational programs, recordings, and commissions of new works.

For the 2017 year, their focus will be based on the wartime experiences of Japanese and Japanese-Americans. Come to Music of Remembrance's booth at Japan Fair 2017 to learn more about their organization and performances.

*****************************************************

About Music of Remembrance

Music of Remembrance (MOR) is a Seattle-based non-profit organization established in 1998 to remember the Holocaust through music. We are not a religious organization, and believe that our mission calls on us to act on the Holocaust’s lessons by also focusing on the experience of others who have been excluded or persecuted for their ethnicity, nationality, faith, gender or sexuality.

Each year we present three major concerts at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, and since 2015 we have also performed annually in San Francisco. We combine these concerts with educational and community awareness events. We have produced seven CD recordings that bring our work to a worldwide audience, and our second documentary film has been screened at festivals on four continents.

Many of the works we perform are by Holocaust-era composers who had the courage to continue creating even in the face of oppression, and by others who dared to speak out through their art against injustice. Each year, we also commission and premiere new works from some of today’s leading composers, telling stories that help remind us all how important and relevant the Holocaust’s lessons are in our own times.

The Holocaust’s lessons call on us to reflect on the impact of all wars on their civilian victims. The focus of MOR’s 2017-18 season will be the premieres of works that we have commissioned from three composers about Japanese and Japanese-American wartime experience.

  1. For decades, Ryuichi Sakamoto has had a unique impact in Japan and around the world as a composer, musician, film actor and peace activist. He has created a setting based on musical elements from his film Nagasaki Memories of My Son for Kiyoke Nagase’s deeply moving poem “Snow Falls” in an English translation by the Empress Michiko. Mr. Sakamoto will also be creating a new work for performance at our concerts in May 2018.

  2. Keiko Fujiie’s Wilderness Mute is a 20-minute song cycle for soprano and baritone with violin, clarinet, cello and double bass. The work sets texts in English translation by victims and survivors of the atomic bombs and makes an eloquent statement about the urgency of preventing nuclear war. Ms. Fujiie, a Nagasaki native and one of Japan’s most noted and frequently-performed composers, has been honored twice with the NHK Symphony Orchestra’s coveted Otaka Prize.

  3. Seattle-based composer Christophe Chagnard will create a work that focuses on the experience of Japanese- Americans forced to internment camps during World War II. The work’s title, Gaman, refers to the struggle to endure the unbearable with patience and dignity. It combines traditional Japanese and classical Western instruments, a narrator/singer, and visual projections. The powerful story is brought to life through the compelling imagery and haunting testimony of artists Takuichi Fujii and Kamekichi Tokita.

MOR’s core instrumental ensemble, drawn from the ranks of the Seattle Symphony, includes some of our region’s leading performers, joined by international-class guest soloists. We seek to attract a broadly varied audience, with programming that combines serious classical music with works in more popular and accessible styles. We try to involve people of all generations in our work, and in 2005 we established an award offering talented young musicians under 18 the opportunity to perform with us.

We will premiere Fujiie’s Wilderness Mute and Sakamoto’s Snow Falls on November 5, 2017 at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, and Chagnard’s Gaman and Sakamoto’s new piece at our concert on May 20, 2018 at the same venue. These works will be reprised at our concert at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on May 24, 2018. We also hope to bring the music to audiences in Japan, and to prepare professional-quality audio and video recordings suitable for world-wide distribution.

【Throwback Thursday】~Raffle~

Last year's raffle drawings were very exciting as the visitors won many gift certificates and goods. There were even a pair of domestic plane tickets from Delta and a pair of tickets to Japan from ANA!

This year, we're happy to announce they'll be a lot of exciting raffle prizes again! It's a little different from last year though, because we'll be having to separate raffle drawings.
One will be the Festival Raffle where $200 for Schwartz Brothers, $200 for Le Campagne, and $220 for Sushi Kappo Tamura are just some of the gift cards you could win! The tickets for the Festival Raffle will be sold at 1 raffle for $5, 5 raffles for $20, and 11 raffles for $40.

The other drawing will be the Airline Raffle! This year, two lucky winners will win a pair of tickets to Japan from either Delta or ANA! Tickets for the Airline Raffle will be sold at 1 raffle for $20 and 3 raffles for $50. Buy a raffle for a chance to win a trip worth over $2000!

Pinpoint what you want by looking at the unique products Pinpoint Marketing Japan will bring to Japan Fair!

Try to pinpoint what the bottom left product is! Give up? It's a fish bone tweezer! This popular fish bone tweezer made by Asahi Industry has a sharp edge made from stainless steel making it easy to pick out even the smallest of bones. The non-slip ergonomic grip and spring makes it so the repetitive grabbing and dropping of bones is easy on your hands.

Pinpoint Marketing Japan is a marketing consultant who helps companies sell their products abroad in both the US and Japan. Through Pinpoint Marketing Japan, companies in Japan are able to expand their business to the US, while US businesses can make their way into the Japanese market.

Another few items they distribute, and will be selling at Japan Fair 2017, are TEPRA, washi tape, and roof ornaments.

Ever seen households or teachers who use printed labels and stickers? TEPRA is able to do that for you! You can type anything into the machine to have it printed onto tape. You can even have it printed on washi tape so it looks really pretty!

So then what's washi tape? Washi is a Japanese word meaning Japanese paper. The design and coloring on washi is appealing to many people. Washi tape is a type of masking tape from Japan that uses washi designs and color instead of the boring pale yellow that most tapes around here are.

Finally, the roof ornaments that Pinpoint Marketing Japan sell are traditionally found on Japanese roofs. These roof ornaments are made out of copper with a demon on the front, and come in three different sizes!

Linda Hoshide, welcome back for another year of Japan Fair!

Linda Hoshide has been inspired by her collection of Japanese fabric to create clothing and accessories. The name of her store, KiMonoMono, comes from Kimono, a traditional Japanese garment, and "mono", the Japanese word for things.

With the Kimono fabric, she makes a variety of goods from tote bags to accessories. The things she make are all very lightweight and soft, so the necklaces, lanyards, and eyeglass holders won't bother you.

Check out her online store and come to Linda Hoshide's booth at Japan Fair 2017 to take a look at her beautiful work in person!

【Yuka Shimizu - Japan Fair 2017 Chair】~Youmaga Interview

【Yuka Shimizu - Japan Fair 2017 Chair】~Youmaga Interview

An interview by Youmaga of the chair of Japan Fair 2017, Yuka Shimizu, was published several days ago!

She, along with another committee member, were the ones who continued the legacy of ENMA's Aki Matsuri in the form of Japan Fair.

Yuka Shimizu is not only the chair of Japan Fair, but is also the founder and owner of Bellevue Children's Academy (BCA) and Willows Preparatory School (WPS).

*******************************************************
Original Article

English Summary:

Yuka Shimizu came to the U.S. for her husband's job in the 90's, opening a small learning center, which became Bellevue Children's Academy in 2000. Now there are about 700 students, with over 35 ethnic backgrounds.
The End of Aki Matsuri and the Beginning of a New Festival
The 18 year long festival was coming to an end, but she didn't want such a large Japanese community event to come to a close as well. When things looked dim without any support coming through, Yuka Shimizu and one of the current committee members, Allen Nakamoto, stepped up to take over the festival. This was her turning point.
Having to start from scratch to get the festival ready, there were many obstacles, but help was offered from ENMA, allowing the first Japan Fair to happen. To her surprise, there were about 15,000 people who showed up to the Meydenbauer Center for Japan Fair 2016. The City of Bellevue even told Yuka that this big of a community event should be continued.
A Festival For the Future of Kids
Japan Fair aims to be an event where Nikkei and First Generation, and Second Generation Japanese can come together. With a strong Japanese community, there will be many ways where the Japanese will be able to help each other through struggles.

【Kaoru Okumura】~Performer~

Did you notice the two ghost like people in our post from two days ago?

If you were at Japan Fair last year, you may have seen Kaoru Okumura and her "twin" lurking around Meydenbauer Center. At Japan Fair, Okumura and her partner act as the "zashiki-warashi twins" (座敷童Twins).

Come to Japan Fair to take a glimpse of their spooky performance!

********************************
Kaoru Okumura is a Japanese Butoh performer based in Seattle, US. A fan of Butoh since 1970s, Kaoru studied Butoh in 1993 at Asbestos-Kan in Tokyo with Akiko Motofuji, Hijikata’s wife, and also had her first performance there. She started Butoh activities in Seattle from 2008. Since then, she has enjoyed performing with local Butoh members, where she experiences how a body bridges the soul and the world. Recently she is focusing solo performance, periodically premiering new pieces at various venues. Kaoru had more than 20 performances in 2016, including Seattle International Dance Festival, Nine Evening 2 Seattle as collaboration with Google Deep Dream, also supported by Google AMI (Artists & Machine Intelligence) in 2016.

【Chef Shiro Kashiba】~Seminar~

【Chef Shiro Kashiba】~Seminar~

Ever heard of Shiro's name? Ever been to Sushi Kashiba? Or any of his other sushi restaurants? People line up for two hours before opening every day for a chance to get a counter seat in front of Shiro Kashiba.

Shiro Kashiba is the person who brought Edo-mae sushi to Seattle.

At Japan Fair 2017, Chef Shiro will be hosting a free seminar on Saturday, July 8th at 1:00 p.m. He will be talking about sushi and his experiences in Seattle. His books will also be available at the seminar so you can get your hands on his autographed books.

We are also very grateful because Sushi Kashiba has donated two $200 gift cards for the Friends of Japan Benefit Dinner!

Come to Japan Fair 2017 for this priceless opportunity!

*****************************************
To Chef Shiro Kashiba, it feels like it was just yesterday.

But in 1970, Chef Shiro introduced the city of Seattle to sushi when he convinced his bosses at Maneki restaurant to build Seattle’s first sushi bar.
Chef Shiro had just completed years of grueling apprenticeships at Yoshino Sushi in the Ginza district of Tokyo, training hard alongside his senior supervisor, the world renowned (and now cinematically famous) sushi maestro, Jiro Ono.
But unlike his contemporaries, Chef Shiro had his eyes on America. Chef Shiro was convinced that he could import the Edo-mae style and “shun” philosophy of Tokyo to the extraordinary variety and delectable seafood offerings of the Pacific Northwest.
He was right. After working at Maneki, Chef Shiro opened his first restaurant, Nikko, in the International District. In 1992, he sold Nikko to the Westin hotel chain and opened the new Nikko at the downtown hotel location. For Westin, Chef Shiro served as Executive Chef and helped open several properties throughout the Americas.
After his first “retirement”, Chef Shiro opened Shiro’s in Belltown in 1994. Shiro’s became a smash success and was one of the pioneering restaurants to usher in Belltown’s revival as a hot dining spot in downtown Seattle. In 2014, Chef Shiro sold his remaining stake of Shiro’s to the I Love Sushi group which operates it to this day.
Nominated twice for the James Beard Award, Chef Shiro has cooked for Japanese Prime Ministers, masters of the arts, star athletes, industry tycoons, and has shared his knowledge and experience with local colleges and universities. Chef Shiro’s dishes have also been served in the First Class cabins of Japan Airlines and United Airlines. But what Chef Shiro enjoys most is preparing and explaining the intricacies and detail of the delicious item he has just served to the customer seated in front of him at the sushi bar.

【Throwback Thursday】Origin of Japan Fair

【Throwback Thur...
【Throwback Thursday】Origin of Japan Fair

What is Japan Fair? Have you been seeing our posts on this blog and on Facebook but still aren't sure what Japan Fair actually is? Well, this is the post for you!

Japan Fair is a free, two-day festival at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, WA, that celebrates Japanese art and culture. It is a communal endeavor of musicians, artisans, community organizations, and businesses from both Japan and the U.S. who come together to share their products, talents, and knowledge of Japan. Through live performances on stage, hands on exhibits, cultural workshops, and vendor booths, the public is immersed in the music, dance, artisanry, and philosophy of Japan.

Japan Fair formed in 2016 as a continuation of the legacy of the “Aki Matsuri”, an annual festival in Bellevue that was presented by the non-profit organization Eastside Nihon Matsuri Association (ENMA). The Aki Matsuri was a two-day program that celebrated Japan’s rich cultural heritage, and featured cultural, educational, and fun events for all age groups. It was held each Fall season for 18 years and was greatly appreciated by the community. In 2016 ENMA retired as a non-profit, and the Aki Matsuri began its transition into a new, sustainable community event. This event, headed by a new volunteer team with the goal of carrying on the annual festival tradition, was called Japan Fair.

The first Japan Fair was held at Meydenbauer Center on September 3 – 4, 2016, under the guidance and help of ENMA as the official successor to the Aki Matsuri. 15,000 people were estimated by Meydenbauer Center to have attended the launch of Japan Fair. Many were returning attendees of the Aki Matsuri, although the festival drew many new, first-time attendees as well, along with a number of new exhibitors from both America and Japan who shared their projects and products with the people of the Pacific Northwest.

Under the mantle of "Introducing and spreading the traditional and modern culture of Japan", Japan Fair 2016 successfully carried on the 18 year legacy of the Aki Matsuri. The local community, made up of both Japanese and American individuals, corporations, and organizations, came together to welcome 20,000 visitors to the event.
From 2017 on, Japan Fair will be held yearly during Tanabata, an annual time that celebrates the spirit of coming together and the connectedness of community. With this in mind, our aim for Japan Fair 2017 is to grow our outreach and expand our visitor demographics to include more of the wider American community.
