コロナPCRテストはシアトル近辺では無料で受けることができます。
公園や大きな駐車場などに検査の臨時施設が作られています。
予約せずともその場所に行けばスマホで簡単に登録ができて、たとえ保険がなくても、外国人旅行者であっても区別なく検査を受けることができます。
先週、オレゴン州のポートランドでもそのようなものと思っていました。
市内のあちこちに検査場が設けてあります。
ダウンタウンにある検査場に行ってみると既に長い車列が出来ていました。そのうちの1人に聞いてみるとすでに20分ほど待っているのだそうです。
そこを諦めて別の検査場へ行ってみると待っている人なし。検査官と直接やりとりしましたが、検査費用として130ドルほどかかるとのこと。
それは良いとしても、まずウェブサイトに自らを登録して予約を取らねば検査は受け付けてくれないとのことです。
持ち時間5分で流れるようなスピードで検査をしてくれたシアトルが急に懐かしく感じました。
米国では州をまたぐと行政がかなり異なります。
その後タイレストランへ。
お決まりのマンゴージュースとマンゴースティッキーライスがこれらのストレスから癒してくれました。

I thought it was like that in Portland, Oregon last week.
There are inspection stations set up all over the city.
When I went to one inspection station in downtown, there was already a long line of cars. When I asked one of them about it, he told me that he was already waiting for about 20 minutes.
I gave up and went to another inspection station where there was no one waiting. I communicated directly with the inspector, who told me that it would cost about $130 for the inspection.
I would have to register myself on the website and make an appointment before they would accept me.
I suddenly felt nostalgic for Seattle, where the test was done in five minutes and at a very fast pace.
In the U.S., the administration is quite different across the states.
Then we went to a Thai restaurant.
The usual mango juice and mango sticky rice soothed me from all these stresses.
サンフランシスコのベイエリア一帯は5つの郡(カウンティー)で今日からロックダウンが再開されました。すべての小売店は基本的に閉鎖が義務付けられ、レストランはテイクアウトのみが許されます。現在のところは、新年の明けまでの継続期間とされていますが、今後延長される可能性もあります。
このところ米国で急激にパンデミックが広がってきたことに対する緊急措置です。
私の住んでいるワシントン州ではロックダウンは免れているものの、引き続き建物許容
人数25%以下が義務付けられた制限内に置かれています。
これからクリスマスに向けて、小売店は一年で最も売り上げが期待できる掻き入れ時なのです。
それがゼロになるという事態に向き合わざるをえなくなりました。
小生も本日からサクラメントとサンフランシスコ行きを予定しており、すでに航空券、レンタカー、ホテルなどを予約していました。
当地に行ったとして、すべての店がクローズされていたら、食事さえもできないことになります。
Pricelineというサイトを通じてホテルやレンタカーを予約したのですが、そこでは良いディールを与えてくれる代わりに、どんなことがあっても変更やキャンセルは認められないと謳っています。
昨夜そのpricelineに連絡し、カルフォルニア知事の突然のロックダウン宣言で、やむなく計画を変更せざるを得ない旨を伝えました。すると、その担当者は電話口で私を待たせたまま、予約していたホテルと直接交渉したのちに、キャンセルを認めてくれたのです。
翌月のホテル予約まで含めて、3つのホテルと1つのレンタカー全てがキャンセル扱いとなりました。
パンデミックと言う非常事態に、通常ではありえない対応をしてくれたカスタマーサービスに感動しました。同時に経済的な損失からの開放感を味わいました。
今回の緊急ロックダウンで、全ての小売店の方々に、同様な解放と救済の道が開かれますように。

Now The San Francisco Bay Area is in a five-county (county) lockdown that resumed today.
All retail stores are essentially mandated to close and restaurants will only be allowed to take out. Currently, the lockdown lasts until the dawn of the New Year, but it may be extended in the future.
This is an emergency measure in response to the recent rapid spread of the pandemic in the United States.
In my home state of Washington, the lockdown has been spared, but buildings will continue to be less than 25% of the number of permitted people is placed within the mandated limit.
From now on, the Christmas season is the time of year when retailers can expect to make the most sales in the year.
We are now forced to face the prospect of zero sales.
I'm going to Sacramento and San Francisco today, and I've already booked flights, car rentals, hotels, etc.
If I go there and all the stores are closed, I won't even be able to eat.
I booked my hotel and car rental through a site called Priceline, which claims to not allow changes or cancellations under any circumstances, in exchange for giving me a good deal.
I contacted the priceline last night and told them I had to change my plans due to the California governor's sudden declaration of lockdown. He kept me waiting on the phone and after negotiating directly with my hotel, he granted me the cancellation.
All three hotels and one rental car were cancelled, including my hotel reservation for the following month.
I was very impressed with the customer service, which was unusual for a pandemic emergency situation. At the same time, I experienced a sense of relief from the financial damage.
May this emergency lockdown pave the way for similar liberation and relief for all retailers.
米国ノースウエストは典型的な晩秋の空模様に突入しています。
毎日パラパラと小雨が降り、日照時間は1日の合計で数十分ほどしかありません。
そんなことで今まで皆さんに紹介してきた夕焼けもすっかりと影を潜めてしまい、お見せすることができないのです。
こちらが立たずば、あちらが立つ。
押してダメなら引いてみよ。
そんなことを考えながら、何か楽しめるものはないかなぁと日々探しています。
今日の午後、裏庭に散らかっている落ち葉を履いている息子を発見しました。あの緑の葉がこんな艶やかな黄色に変色するのにはいつもながら驚きます。
親に言われたでもないのに自主的に庭掃除に精を出している息子の成長ぶりにも驚きです。
その後彼とともに近所のトレイルを散策しました。
雨のやんだ頃を見計らってなるべく外出し、散歩を欠かさないようにしています。
ポートランドダウンタウンにあるどこのビルディングの1階にも、このようにボードが貼られています。
ちょいワルとおしゃれが混ぜあったようなユニークな街で、全米で米国人が最も移住したいナンバーワンに挙げられていた街がPortlandなんです。
BLMの名を借りたデモ行進と破壊活動で見る影もなく変わり果ててしまいました。
この暴力行動に対して民主党を基盤としている州や市の当局は警察力を行使しなかったので暴動はますますエスカレート。
やむなく連邦政府が他の州の警察力を借りながら警戒を強めたのです。
他の州からのトランプ支持派もこの街にやってきては地元のバイデン派と睨み合ったり威圧行動をとったとか。
本日Portlandを去るときに、
クラクションを鳴らした数十台の車列が信号機を無視しながら行進していたため、5分間ほどほど交差点で足止めされました。
どちらに属している団体かは確認できませんでしたが。
米国は南北戦争以来、国内が二分化され対立する危機に瀕しているとも言われる時があります。
対立自体を表面的に回避できたとしても、問題の根幹治療には至りません。
表面に現れてきた対立を通じて、不正や欺瞞が暴露され一掃されなくてはならないかと思います。

Portland is a unique mix of a small badass and fashionable, and it was the number one place Americans wanted to move to in the United States.
The BLM-inspired marches and vandalism have transformed it into a sham from its former self.
The riots escalated as state and city authorities, based on the Democratic Party, did not use police force against this violent action enough.
Reluctantly, the federal government increased its vigilance, with the help of police forces from other states.
Trump supporters from other states also came to the city and engaged in standoffs and intimidation with local Biden groups.
As I left Portland today,
I was stranded at the intersection for about five minutes as a convoy of dozens of vehicles honked their horns and marched on, ignoring the traffic lights.
It was not possible to confirm which group they belonged to.
The U.S. is at times said to be on the verge of the most divided and confrontational nation in the country since the Civil War.
Even if the conflict itself could be superficially avoided, it would not cure the root of the problem.
I believe that the injustice and deception must be exposed and swept away through the conflicts that have emerged on the surface.
Dinner I had at a Japanese restaurant with a boat affixed to it.
The kama-meshi was still alive and well.
米国大統領選挙の集計結果が混沌としてきました。
ありえないほどのバイデン票が土壇場で急進撃したり、トランプ票が大量廃棄されてるのが見つかったり、郵便投票での開票分数万がすべてバイデン票であったり。
これらは動かぬ物的証拠ですから、今後正当な裁判で明らかにされていくことでしょう。
私たち一般市民はカッカと頭に血をのぼらせることなく、先ずは落ち着きましょう。
そう温泉にでもゆっくり浸かって。
悠久の大自然の中に身を置いて、ちっぽけな自分の世界から飛び出すんです。
バイデンでもトランプでも、あなたがその候補を応援していた理由は何ですか？
あなた自身の権益に資するからですか。
それとも米国、そして全世界により資するからですか。
向こう4年間により大きな便益をその人が与えてくれそうだからですか。
それとも悠久の昔から悠久の先まで、時間の試練に耐えうる普遍的な価値により即しているからですか。
日本にあれば至るところに温泉がありますね。
米国ではそういうわけにもいかず、先週アイダホまで8時間のドライブをしてここの河原の温泉にたどり着きました。
大自然の中に身をさらすと、自分とその考えがなんともちっぽけであることに気づかされます。

The U.S. presidential election tallies have been chaotic.
An unbelievable number of Biden votes have been surged at the last minute, a large number of Trump votes have been found discarded, and tens of thousands of mail ballot openings are all Biden votes.
These are unmoving physical evidence, and they will be revealed in a legitimate court of law in the future.
We ordinary citizens should calm down and not get our heads in a knot.
So, let's soak in a hot spring or something.
Let's get out of our own little world and into the vastness of nature.
Whether it was Biden or Trump, why did you support that candidate?
Does it serve your own interests or does it serve the United States and the whole world better?
Is it because the person is likely to provide you with greater benefits over the next four years?
Or is it because it is more in line with universal values that will stand the test of time, from time immemorial to time beyond?
In Japan, there are hot springs everywhere.
In the U.S. you can't do that, and last week we drove eight hours to Idaho to visit a hot spring on the riverbank there.
When you're exposed to the wilderness, you realize how insignificant you and your thoughts are.

米国大統領選挙の投票が終了しました。
現在開票が進んでいてすでに東部の州では結果が判明しています。どこの州でも大抵僅差であり、得票数においても数%も違わない結果に私自身は驚いています。
バイデンの関わっていたウクライナや中国からの闇献金スキャンダルにもかかわらず、この結果に意外なものを見るようです。
本日5名の米国人にお会いしました。
彼らは全てバイデン側だそうです。
そのうちの3名がバイデンの勝利を確信していて、今晩選挙結果を受けてのドリンク・パーティーを打ち合わせしているのです。
彼らの会話を立ち聞きしながら、あまりにも意外だったのでこんな言葉を投げかけてみました。
「バイデンの息子さんのスキャンダル聞いていますか。彼が中国やウクライナの企業からとてつもない資金を得ていることなど？」
一瞬その3人がシーンと静まり返りました。
「知っているけど、、」と1人がしどろもどろ。
何かやばいことを聞いてしまったような雰囲気です。
現在私はオレゴン州のポートランドに来ています。
カリフォルニア・オレゴン・ワシントンの西海岸3州は歴史上どんな時にも民主党を応援して来たリベラル州です。
行きつけの日本レストランに連絡してみると午後5時以降は営業自粛要請が州政府より出ているとのことでテイクアウトしか利用できないと言われてしまいました。
もう一つの日本レストランに連絡するとそこは通常営業とのことで、そこで夕食にありつけたのです。
選挙結果を受けた暴動発生に政府は警戒しています。
4年前の本日も私は同じPortlandに来ていました。
トランプが勝利したことを受けて数千人のデモ隊がダウンタウンを練り歩き、高速道路を封鎖したのです。
危うくその封鎖網の中に閉じ込められるところでした。
米国は移民による多民族国家ゆえに、良くも悪くも多くの価値観が同居しています。
抗議運動から破壊的なデモ活動に走ると言う急進派がいる一方で、多くの人は冷静さを失わずに数時間後の結果を形を飲みながら見守っています。
いよいよ大統領選挙が来週に近づいてきました。
日本の選挙と異なるのは投票日が1日ではないことです。
既に先週前から各有権者には投票用紙が郵送され、いつでも投票ポストに投函できるます。すでに7千万人の方が投票終えたようです。
ここ1週間でバイデン候補のスキャンダルが明るみになりつつあります。息子とともにウクライナや中国との闇の関係が指摘されるようになりました。
運転しているとハイウェイ上の橋で選挙応援をしている方々が見えます。ここでクラクションを鳴らすと、抗議ではなく賛同を現す意思表示となります。
カリフォルニア・ベイエリアは抜けるような青空の天候で初夏を思わせるような陽気でした。
日中は半袖じゃないと暑くてやっていけません。
こちらノースウエストに帰ると、すでに典型的な秋冬の気圧配置が始まってました。
それは分厚い雲に覆われて、一日のうちに断続的に雨が何回となく降り続けることです。
この時期になると気候型ウツになられる方が多いのは納得です。特に自宅自粛で外出できない場合はその傾向が強まります。
うつ予防のために雨が止んだのを見計らって散歩に出かけます。スキを突くのです。スキあり！
今日は夕日が見れないんだろうと思いながらも高台に登ってみると、雲の切れ間からきれいな夕焼け空。
日の入りは夏至の頃と比べてすでに3時間以上も早り午後6時頃。

コロナ禍で飲食店は店内営業が機能していないので路上での営業となっています。

変わり果てた街街の様子。
今年2月以来7カ月ぶりの訪問となりました。
ダウンタウンでは小売店の多くが閉鎖したまま、1階のガラス窓は防壁の木材が貼られています。
中心街に近づくほど人々の出足は鈍く、ビジネスはより大きなダメージを受けているのが見て取れます。
特に西海岸の心臓部、この街の金融街には日中全く人気がありません。ホワイトカラーの労働者はみんな自宅でオンラインで仕事してるのだそうです。
私の関係者も2割から3割ほどが撤退しています。
ただお会いした人々にはさほど悲壮感はなく、これからも生きていくぞと言うたくましさか、なるようにしかならないと言う諦観のようなところから来る底力を感じました。
お互いの近況を報告し合いながら、尚も神が最善へと導いてくださることを確認し合うことができました。
週末の夕方ともなれば常にごった返しているサンフランシスコ空港がガラガラな点は得した感じです。
セキュリティーチェックですら周囲には誰もなくいなくて、持ち時間は0。
飛行機も遅延なくスケジュール通りに運行です。
3列席の真ん中席をソーシャルディスタンスとして空席にしてくれています。
ストレスフリーで移動ができるのはコロナの恩恵でした。
"この苦しみのときに彼らが主に向かって叫ぶと主は彼らを苦悩から導き出された。
主が嵐を鎮められると波は穏やかになった。
波が凪いだので彼らは喜んだ。主は彼らをその望む港に導かれた。

San Francisco in the midst of the corona crisis.
The changing face of the city streets.
It's been seven months since February of this year.
Many of the retail stores downtown remain closed, and the ground floor glass windows are covered with bulletproof wood.
The closer you get to the center of the city, the slower people turn out, and you can see that business is taking a greater toll.
The financial district of the city, the heart of the West Coast, is not popular at all during the day.All the white collar workers are working online from home.
About 20% to 30% of the people I work with have left the city.
However, the people I met were not so sad, and I felt their resilience, which comes from either a resignation that they will continue to live, or a resignation that there is nothing but what will be.
We were able to report back to each other on what we were doing, and yet we were able to confirm that God was leading us to the best.
It was a blessing that the San Francisco airport, which is always crowded on weekend evenings, was not so busy.
Even the security check point was empty and there was no one around me and I had zero time to spare.
The flight was on schedule with no delays.
They have left the middle seat in the middle of row 3 empty as social distance.
It was a blessing to have a stress-free trip due to Corona.
“Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind.“

ベイエリアの多くの商業地域では車両通行止めとなっているところが多いです。
パンデミックが続いて交通量が極端に少なくなっているため可能となったのでしょう。レストランは路上にテーブルを設置して営業し続けることができます。
夕食を探してぶらぶらしているとイタリア系らしいレストランの前にきたので一応どこの国のレストランですかと聞いてみた。
「Israelです」とウエーターの答え。
待ってましたとばかりに路上に出されているテーブルを確保。
デザートには必ずどこのイスラエルレストランでも見かける蜂蜜味の例のものがありました。

When I was wandering around looking for dinner, I came to a restaurant that seemed to be Italian, so asked a waiter what ethnic food?
The waiter replied, "Israel," and I got a table on the street.
For dessert, there was a honey-flavored dessert that you can see in every Israeli restaurant.
