オリンピック半島でキャンプ

テントの入り口に立って朝の食事ができていることを告げてくれた魔女

この夕日はいつものシアトルの定位置観測地点からのものではありません。そこにあるはずのオリンピック山脈は無く、水平線に直接太陽が没してしているのが見えるはずです。
山脈を越えた向こう側にある太平洋岸での日の入りです。

過去数日間、毎年我が家恒例の夏季キャンプをこのオリンピック半島で過ごしていました。

下の子供が歩けない頃からのファミリーキャンプですが、時は巡って今やキャンプを成り立たせている主役は子供たちとなりました。
彼らはこの数日間の食事のための献立を考え、その下準備をし、そして調理を受け持ってくれています。

今年はコロナ禍のためかキャンプをする家族連れが例年より多く、常にキャンプ場は満席です。このため娘は、朝7時には家を出て約4時間のドライブの後、チェックインできる時間にキャンプ場に到着、テントの場所を確保してくれました。私は息子と共にそれよりも数時間遅れて到着。

クレセントレイクと言う名前の通り三日月型をした湖のほとりにキャンプテントを張りました。その当日、1時間弱のドライブをして太平洋岸に出ての夕日鑑賞です。

今まで子供たちの世話をする一方でしたが、10代後半となった今や、すでに積極的に世話をしてくれるようになった彼らは頼もしい限りです。

ところでそのような頼もしい働きをしてくれる娘をこの期間中、「魔女」と呼んでいました。テキパキとどんな仕事もこなしてしまう不思議な力を持っているからです。10年ほど前に日本から遊びに来た甥が名付けた呼び名でもありました。

赤色に変色した写真は、そんな彼女がテントの入り口に立って早朝、「おはよう〜！朝ごはんができたよー」とまだ寝ている私たちを起こしに来てくれた時のものです。

This sunset is not from the usual Seattle stationary observation point. The Olympic Mountains are not there, as you can see, also you can see the sun sinking directly into the horizon.

This is the sunset on the Pacific coast across the mountains.

For the past few days, we have been spending our annual family's summer camp here on the Olympic Peninsula.

It's been a family camp since our youngest child couldn't walk, but time has passed and now it's the kids who are the stars of what makes the camp work.
They are responsible for planning, preparing, and cooking the meals for the next few days.

This year there are more families camping than usual due to the corona disaster and the campground is always full. Because of this, my daughter left the house at 7 a.m. and after a four-hour drive, arrived at the campsite just in time to check in and secure a spot for our tent. I arrived a few hours later than that, along with my son.

We set up our camping tent on the shore of a crescent-shaped lake, as the name suggests, Crescent Lake. That day, we drove less than an hour to go out to the Pacific coast to watch the sunset.

I've always been one to take care of our kids, but now that they're in their late teens, they're already taking an active role in taking care of us, which is very encouraging.

By the way, I called my daughter "witch" during this period of time because she is such a reliable worker and she has a mysterious power to do any kind of work quickly. My nephew called her "witch" when he came to visit us from Japan about 10 years ago.

The picture that turned red is of her standing at the entrance of the tent in the early morning and saying "Good morning! The breakfast is ready for you.”
This is when she came to wake us up when we were still asleep.

サンセット・ヨガ

初のサンセットヨガに挑戦しました。
インストラクターはAkemi。

彼女の言う通りに足を出したり、手をのばしたり、片足で立ったり.......私は片足でのバランスが取れずに、2秒後には体制を崩してしいました。しかし彼女は何秒であろうとも平気。
しかも片足を高く上げる。私は途中まで上げると、太ももをつってしまった。

その直前の懸垂では、私はまだ彼女には負けていないと安心したのですが、ヨガでは完全に敗北です。こんなにも体が固かったり、バランス感覚が欠如していたとは知らず、驚きとともにがっかりしました。

「自分はまだ大丈夫」と思っていても、それは独りよがりなものになりやすいものです。
他者の目で、他者のスタンダードと比較されて自分の位置づけが分かります。

ところで世界に存在している最大で絶対の他者とは、創造主なるお方です。この方からの視線や評価、それに価値観に照らされて自分自身を保つなら、あら不思議！
それ以外の小さな他者の評価や言葉に踊らされず、一喜一憂しない自立できる世界が開かれて来ます。

"いと高くあがめられ、永遠の住まいに住み、その名が聖である方が、こう仰せられる。「わたしは、高く聖なる所に住み、砕かれた人、へりくだった人とともに住む。へりくだった人たちの霊を生かし、砕かれた人たちの心を生かすためである。"
イザヤ書　57章15節

I tried Sunset Yoga for the first time.
The instructor was Akemi.

I did as she told me, legs outstretched, hands outstretched, and standing on one leg.... I couldn't balance on one leg and after two seconds I was out of alignment. But she didn't care how many seconds it took.

And she raises one leg high. When I was halfway up, I pinched my thigh.

Just before yoga, we did pull-ups, I was reassured that I hadn't been defeated by her, but in yoga, I was completely defeated.

I was both surprised and disappointed, not realizing that I was so stiff and lacking in balance.

It's easy to become complacent, even when you think, "I'm still okay.
You can understand your position in the eyes of others, compared to their standards.

By the way, the greatest and absolute other person in the world is the Creator. If you keep yourself in the light of this person's gaze, evaluation, and values, oh my goodness!

The world where you can be independent and not be swayed by the evaluations and words of others, and not be happy or sad all at once, will open up to you.

“For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
Isaiah 57:15

森の妖精への語りかけ

今日も近くの森に散歩に出かけました。
毎週のように来ているところですが、毎回新たな発見があります。

今回の発見は野生の朝顔です。
真っ白いその花は形からして朝顔そっくりなのですが、家人は「ブラックベリーの花だ」と教えてくれました。

茎はトゲだらけの上に実は真っ黒なブラックベリーの花が、あんなに可憐で純白であるとは！そのコントラストに驚きです。

そしてトトロの木を発見。
森の中にある大木を見つけると勝手にその名を付けるのですが、今回のは映画で見た一本の木ではなく、多くの幹が集まって束となっているものでした。

さっそく娘は、ひらひらと軽快な足取りで木登りを始めます。
幹の間から溢れる光線を背後から受けると、忍者と言うよりもまるで妖精のように見えたのでした。

後にその写真を見た娘自身は、「大自然の声を聞こうとする者には(妖精)語りかけて来るんだよ」なんて言うコメントを残していました。

そういえば、イエスの生涯の後半部分は、例え話を多用されています。

その例え話は、小学生が聞いてもよくわかる簡単な話です。
ところが、それが意味しているところは誰にもわからず、特に揚げ足取りをしようとしている時の宗教学者などの敵対勢力を煙に巻いてしまいました。とんちんかんにしか聞こえず、その場を去っていこうとする者たちに対してイエスは言われています。

「聞く耳のあるものは聞きなさい」

聖書を読んで理解するところの難しさは、結局ここにあるような気がします。文学的にその字面の意味を理解できたとしても、その文章が言わんとしている真意を汲み取る事は知的作業だけでは困難な場合が多いのです。

「神を調べてあげてやろう」と上から目線で聖書にアプローチしても、砂を噛むような思いにしか至らないはずです。

「主よ、お話ください。僕は聞いております」
(サムエル3:10)
これが、みことばが開かれていくときの私どもの姿勢です。

本日の夕日は、やはり日輪自体を見ることは出来ませんでした。
でも雲の向こう側には赤い太陽が確かに存在するのであり、空に浮かぶ雲を刻々と赤く染め上げて行く自然現象には、私たちを楽しませようとしている創造主の優しい意図を感じました。

Today we went for another walk in the nearby woods.
I come here almost every week, and each time I discover something new.

This time it was wild morning glories.
The pure white flowers look just like morning glories, but one of the family members told me that they are blackberry flowers.

I didn't realize that a blackberry flower with spiky stems and dark berries was so pretty and pure white! The contrast is amazing.

And then we found a Totoro tree.
We take the liberty of naming a large tree in the forest when we find one, but this one wasn't the single tree like we'd seen in the movie; it was a bunch of trunks.

My daughter immediately began to climb the tree with a fluttering.
She looked more like a fairy than a ninja as the rays of light flooded through the trunks from behind her.

My daughter, who saw this picture, later commented that "they speak to those who try to listen to the voice of nature".

Come to think of it, the latter part of Jesus' life is heavily laced with parables.
The parable is a simple story that a schoolboy could hear and understand.

However, no one could understand what it meant, and it smoked hostile forces, especially religious scholars and others at the time who were trying to fry it up. To those who only heard the pomp and circumstance and wanted to leave, Jesus said.

'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'

I think this is where the difficulty in reading and understanding the Bible lies after all. Even if we can understand the literal meaning of the text from a literary standpoint, it is often difficult to get the true meaning of what the text is trying to say through intellectual work alone.

Approaching the Bible from the top position , "I'll look up God, who are you?” This should only lead to chewing sand.

“Lord, speak to me. I am listening.”
(1 Sam 3:10)

This is our attitude as the Word of God is being opened.

Today's sunset, as expected, we couldn't see the sun wheel itself.

But the red sun is definitely there on the other side of the clouds, and the natural phenomenon of the clouds in the sky being tinted red by the minute, I felt the gentle intention of the Creator to entertain us.

オレゴンでの夏休み

今朝は朝の5時からAkemiの目覚ましがけたたましく鳴り、何回もsnoozingでやり過ごしてから、6時に皆で湧き上がりました。
こんなに朝早く起きる事は滅多にないのですが、遊びのためには命をかけねばなりません。笑。

片道2時間弱のトレッキング。
まだ朝が早いためか、鳥のさえずり声が周囲にこだまするように聴こえて癒されます。

深淵を見つけてそこに真っ先にジャンプしたのはAkemi。
子供らは繰り返し光の中へ飛び込んでいきますが、私は1回でもう十分。水が半端なく冷たくて、10秒以上浸かっていると足がしびれてきます。ただエメラルド色に輝くその水は、大変綺麗で感動です。

岩肌を流れる清流に乗って滑り台のように滑るスライダーもやってみました。最後は滝壺のプールにドボンと落ちるのですが、水深が充分あって足も怪我することなく楽しめました。

しばし夏休みの1日を堪能しました。

"これは主が設けられた日。この日を楽しみ喜ぼう。"
詩篇　118篇24節

This morning, Akemi's alarm went off loudly at 5am and kept going as snoozing function a lot of times. After we made it through, we all sprung up at 6:00am.

I rarely get up this early in the morning, but I have to risk my life for the sake of play. LOL.

The trek took less than two hours each way.
Maybe because it's still early in the morning, the chirping of the birds is soothing as it echoes around us.

We found an pool and Akemi jumped there first fearlessly.
My kids repeatedly jumped into the pool, but once was enough for me. The water is so cold that my feet go numb after more than 10 seconds in the water. However, the emerald color of the water is very beautiful and impressive.

We also tried the slider, which is a slide with a clear stream running down the rock face. At the end of the slider, we fall into the pool of the waterfall, but the water was deep enough to enjoy it without injuring our feet.

We enjoyed a summer vacation for a while.

"This is the day that the Lord has established. Let us enjoy and rejoice in this day."

サンショウウオ

娘から送られてきた画像ビデオもシェアさせて下さい。私が川辺で昼寝してる時に子供らはサンショウウオを発見していたようです。1度も見たことがないこの貴重な動物を見てみたかったものです。

Let me also share a picture and a video sent to me by my daughter. Apparently the kids were spotting a salamander while I was napping by the river, that I've never seen. I would have loved to see this precious animal.

ポートランドのホテルで

家族がホテルに到着すると、私たちは多目的室にある卓球をしに行きました。
宿泊客いくらかはいるのですが皆さん他人との接触を避けているためか、どこにも人を見かけません。
おかげでその多目的室は我が家の独占状態。

中学時代に1カ月間卓球部に入部した経験があると私としては上級者のつもりでいたのですが、我が子たちと対戦してほぼ互角。彼らはどこで卓球覚えたのか、ちゃんと球を返してきてラリーが続きます。

その後ホテルの隣にある広大なサッカー場に出て行きました。そこで端から端まで息子と徒競走。4回繰り返して私は降参あうると、その後は彼1人で走ってました。オレゴン州では週末にこのいくつものサッカー場が人で溢れるほど、子供も大人もゲームを楽しんでいます。ところがまだワシントン州では屋内は勿論、どんな屋外スポーツもご法度なんです。
昨年の今頃、彼は毎週すべての試合でヘトヘトになっていたのですが、今はチームでの練習も出来ないままと、残念そうに言っていました。

10代の若い子が感染する確率の低さ。
たとえ感染したとしても重篤化するその確率の低さ。
1日数万人と言う新規感染者が米国で毎日あるとの報道ですが、若い子たちが重篤化した例を聞いたことがありません。
さらに3密状態でもない屋外スポーツでたとえ陽性者がいたとしても感染する確率はさらに低いはず。

米国ってもう少し合理的な判断ができる国かとばかり思っていましたが、このような過剰な制限政策では首をかしげるばかりです。

さて明日は朝の6時に起きてハイキング行こうとの子供らの計画です。夜食も食べたことだし早めに休むこととします。

"主に仕えることが不満なら、あの大河の向こうにいた、あなたがたの先祖が仕えた神々でも、今あなたがたが住んでいる地のアモリ人の神々でも、あなたがたが仕えようと思うものを、今日選ぶがよい。ただし、私と私の家は主に仕える。」"
ヨシュア記　24章15節

私たちの周囲の人々がコロナ禍に対してどのような判断や政策をとることがあったとしても、それはそれとして尊重した上で、自らの可能な範囲内でできるに生きて、楽しみを見つければ良いはずです。
かつてヨシュアは、同胞イスラエル人が自分たちの神を忘れ偶像に走ることがあったとしても、自分と自分の家族のスタンスをはっきりと表明しています。

When my family arrived at the hotel, we went to play table tennis in the multi-purpose room.

There were a few guests in this hotel, but I didn't see anyone anywhere because everyone was avoiding contact with other people.
Thanks to this, that multi-purpose room is a monopoly in our house.

I thought I was an expert when I joined the table tennis club for one months in junior high school, but I played against my children and it was almost an even match. Where did they learn to play table tennis?
They returned the ball properly and the rally continued.

Then we went out to the huge soccer field next to the hotel. I ran with my son from one end of the field to the other, I gave up after 4 times and he ran alone after that.
In Oregon, these several soccer fields are so packed with people on weekends that kids and adults alike are playing the game. However, it's still restricted to play any outdoor sports, of course indoors, in Washington state.

This time last year, my son was exhausted at a few games in every week, and now he's not allowed even to practice with his team. He said ruefully that he was missing playing soccer in his last High school season.

The low probability of a young teenager getting infected with coronavirus.

Even if they are infected, the odds of them becoming seriously ill are low.

There are tens of thousands of new cases a day in the U.S. every day, according to reports, and I have ever heard of that young children becoming seriously ill.

And even if someone were positive virus carrier playing in an outdoor sport that isn't even crowded, the chances of getting infected are even lower. Hmmm.

I always thought the United States was a country that could make a more rational decision, but this overly restrictive policy just makes me shake my head.

Well, the kids plan to get up at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow to go hiking. We've had our evening meal and we're going to rest early.

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15

No matter what decisions or policies the people around us may make regarding the coronation disaster, if you respect that, and live within your ability to do so and find enjoyment in it, that should be good.

Even though Joshua once said that his fellow Israelites had forgotten their God and run to idols, He clearly states his stance on himself and his family.

江戸の行く末

1666年にあったロンドン大火では4日間市内の木造家屋を燃やし続けた結果、その約9割が灰になったと言われます。しかもその前年にはベストの大流行が重なっていて8万人ほどの死者が出ていたらしい。
「泣きっ面に蜂」とはこのことで、とんだ災難が続いたものです。その後の復興計画においては木造建築が禁止され、広い道路と下水道が整備されて、近代都市誕生の礎を築いたと知れば「災い転じて福となす」の句も思い出されます。この後約100年後に産業革命をいち早く完成させる英国では、その大英帝国の首都拠点として機能するための大改造ともなったのでした。

そのロンドン大火から約9年ほど前の1657年には、江戸で明暦の大火がありました。家康以来から続く古い密集した下町においてはその全てが、市街全体では6割が灰となり、天守閣を含めた江戸城のほとんどが焼失されました。江戸においてもこの後、耐火構造を考慮してのまちづくりが進められて行きます。
まず江戸城天守閣再建案は、庶民の暮らしを再建することが先であるとして幕府は再建を見送ります。
道幅をうんと広くしたり、屋根の向きを同一方向に統一することによって出火の際は延焼防止のため倒壊しやすくしました。

こんなことなどを想起したのは、今日東京都知事選挙の結果の報道に接したからです。
コロナ禍で経済活動が境地に陥っている東京において、庶民の暮らしを真っ先に考えるリーダーが選ばれたのでしょうか。10年先、いや数10年先を見通した大構想をビジョンするリーダーを選んでくれたのでしょうか。

その結果を聞いて大いに戸惑ったり、55%と言う投票率の低さ、人々の関心のなさに驚いたり。

そんな複雑な感情をワシントン湖畔に燦燦と注ぐ爽やかな陽光の中で抱いていました。
あまりに東京は遠く、またその世相の厳しさが今日の湖畔の平穏さと相容れないものでした。

「ええ〜イ、どうにでもなれ〜イ　べらんめい」ってな江戸弁を吐いてみたくなったのは、その乖離の甚だしさのせいにしておきます。

First, the shogunate decided not to rebuild the Edo Castle in order to keep on the grounds that it was necessary to rebuild the lives of the common people first. You should make the streets wide and the roofs facing the same direction to prevent the spread of fire.

By widening the road and unifying the roofs in the same direction, the fire may be prevented from spreading. This made it easier to collapse.

I was reminded of this today when I came across the results of the Tokyo government election.

In Tokyo, where economic activity has been plunged into a state of crisis due to the corona crisis, did you have elected a leader who cares first and foremost about the lives of ordinary people? Do you have chosen the leader with a big vision that looks 10 years, or even decades, into the future?

I was greatly puzzled by the results, and surprised at the low turnout of 55%, and the lack of interest people had in .

I had mixed emotions as I basked in the glorious, refreshing sunshine on the shores of Lake Washington, a place so far away from Tokyo and so harsh there that it was hard to reconcile it with the peace of today's lakeside atmosphere.

I would like to say this in old form of Tokyo dialect, whatever let it be done.
I'll blame it on the enormity of the divergence between here and Tokyo.

Happy Father’s Day!

世界中のお父様に特別な祝福がありますように。
そしてその全てのお父さんを造られた天の父なる神に栄光が帰されますように。
あなたたち2人の父であることがとても誇りであり、毎日喜びを与えてくれてうれしいです。この二日間のキャンプの中で私たちは共に父なる神の被造者であることを自然界の中で学びました。

Happy Father's Day!

Special blessings to all the fathers of the world.
And may the glory return to God the Heavenly Father who made all those fathers.

I am so proud to be a father to both of you and I am glad that you give me joy every day. During this two-day camp, we learned that we are both God the Father's creations in the natural world.

今学期最後の授業日

子供らの学校は明日で学期末を迎えその後長い夏休みに入ります。
10年ほど前はこの日を待っていたかのようにして翌日から日本へ1時帰国し、そして子供たちは地方の公立小学校へ数週間の体験入学を繰り返していました。

もちろんそのすべての段取りは親である私たちが計画しては、彼らを母国でありながらも異文化世界へと紹介、その浸透を計ったのでした。

10代も後半となった2人の子供らは今や、私を連れ出してアウトドアライフへと誘ってくれています。
期末のオンライン授業を明日息子が終えるのを待って、私たちは約3時間のドライブ、そして1時間ほどの山道をマウンテンバイクで走って湖のほとりでキャンプをするのです。もちろん人里離れたその山奥には人っ子1人いないことでしょう。

2泊3日の食料は全て子供らが調達してくれます。
私用のマウンテンバイクまで今週彼らが見つけ出してくれました。テントや寝袋をバックパックに担いでの山道サイクリング計画の多くの部分を彼らが立案し世話をしてくれているものです。

もはや、「老いては子に従え」と言う境遇に至ったと言うことでしょうか？うれしくもあり、寂しくもあり。
そういうわけでここしばらくの間、シアトルの夕日紹介は今日でお休みです。帰宅後そのキャンプの様子など報告させていただきます。

Tomorrow is the last day of the school year for my children, and they will start a long summer vacation.

About 10 years ago, we were waiting for this day to come and go back to Japan the next day for our children were repeatedly sent to a local public elementary school for a few weeks of hands-on experience.

Of course, we, as parents, had to plan all the arrangements, and we had to make sure they were fine in their home country, but in a different culture. I introduced them to the different world and made them go to immersion into it.

Today my two children, now in their late teens, have taken me out and invited me to join them in their outdoor life.
Waiting for my son to finish his final online class tomorrow, we will drive about 3 hours and an hour-long mountain bike ride for camping in middle of wild mountains by a lake. There must not be found any person in such a remote mountains.

The kids will provide all the food for 3 days and 2 nights.
They even found my mountain bike for me this week. They planned and took care of a lot of the mountain bike riding plans with tents and sleeping bags in their backpacks. It is a thing that has been done for me.

Do you think I have reached the point already where "follow your children in old age" stage?
I'm both happy and a little sad.

So I won't introduce the Seattle sunset for a few days from now. I'll report on the camp after I come home.

とにかく体を動かそう

今日は空一面に黒い雨雲が広がり夕焼けは望めそうにはありませんでした。これだけ隙間なく雨雲に閉ざされていては、すぐに諦めもつくと言うものです。

イーストサイドは午前中からこのような天気でしたが、午後になりシアトルの北にあるディスカバリーパークまで行ってみると晴れていました。

そこではおやつを食べ、娘がウクレレを弾き、水に浸かったり、ビデオ収録したり、昼寝したり、丘の上り坂で走競争したり様々なアクティビティーを楽しんだのです。

私の上空は雲に閉ざされていても、動いてみると他の場所では明るい春の陽光が刺していたのです。

在宅自粛の続く中ですが、とにかく体を動かして外に出てみることをおすすめします。知人のある教師は毎日2時間は散歩に出かけると言っていました。私もそのくらいの時間は外を出歩いています。
すると様々な気付きや気分転換が生じて、体と心が生かされていきます。

帰路はシアトルダウンタウンを通ったのですが、その中心部はバリケードで車両禁止となっていて、しかも数十人の警官隊が1カ所に待機しているのを見かけました。多くの建物の1階部分は窓ガラスが割られてベニヤ板で封印されています。

405南方角、ベルビューからレントンまでの高速道路で午後4時台に、この2カ月間で初めて渋滞に巻き込まれて何度も停車しました。今週の月曜からシアトル近辺ではステイホームオーダー自体は解かれたようです。各種ビジネスはまだ閉鎖命令が続いていますが、人々の動きが多少は戻ってきたと言う事なのでしょう。

渋滞に巻き込まれてホッと安心した感覚を味わ得るとは、思いもしなかったことです。

Today, there were black rain clouds covering the sky and there was no way to see the sunset. It is easy to give up seeing sunset when it is closed by rain clouds with no gap like this.

It's been like this on the East Side since this morning, but in the afternoon it was sunny when I drove up to Discovery Park, just north of Seattle.

There we had a snack, my daughter played the ukulele, took a dip in the water, recorded a video, took a nap, and enjoyed a variety of activities including a running race up the hill.

Even though the sky above me was closed to clouds, when I moved, the bright spring sunshine stung in other places.

We are still bounded staying at home, but I encourage you to get out and move your body. A teacher I knew told me that he goes out for a walk at least two hours every day. I'm out and about that amount of time too.

The body and mind will be kept alive by various awareness and mood swings.

On my way home, I drove through downtown Seattle, where the center of the city was barricaded and no vehicles were allowed, and I saw dozens of cops waiting in one place. The ground floors of many buildings are sealed with plywood as window glass is broken.

The 405 southbound, on the Bellevue to Renton freeway in the 4 p.m. , I got stuck in traffic for the first time in two months and made multiple stops. Starting this Monday, the stay-home order itself seems to have been lifted in the Seattle area. The various businesses are still under closure orders, but I guess that means that people are moving back somewhat.

I had no idea that I would get a sense of relief from being stuck in traffic.
