The days are like a traveler, and the years that come and go are also like a traveler. Those who spend their lives on board as boatmen, or those who wait for their time to grow old pulling horses are traveling every day, and they make their home in the journey. Many people in the past also died while traveling.

This is the first part of "The Narrow Road to the Tohoku" by Matsuo Basho.

The frame in which it is written has been lying dormant in a storage room for many years, but today I finally installed it on the wall.

It is the work of an old man in a house standing next to the property of a local church in Japan

By the way, thank you all for the many words of congratulations on my birthday today. It was as if a few days ago I had entered elementary school with a nervous breakdown, but it has already been over half a century since I then.

When I was in my 40s, I didn't even register my birthday on Facebook because I didn't want people to ask me how old I was. I told my family that they didn't have to congratulate me or anything. I think I was probably ashamed of myself for not having contributed anything to the world even at that age.

When I passed my 50s, my mind changed.

Oda Nobunaga was 49 years old when he was killed in the Honnoji Incident.
If I am a "human being of 50 years" as in Atsumori written, I have already lived my life and lest of it is just a bonus.

Instead of being ashamed of myself for wasting my years and not getting anything done, I have come to accept myself as I am. I may have reached the state of a dead man who is no longer moved by self-satisfaction or the praise of others.

Matsuo Basho regarded the flow of time itself as a traveler who passes on unchanged.

My life, that living itself seems to be a traveler.
It is only a temporary figure, no matter how short or long it is.
At the end of the journey, we are invited to live in our eternal home, which stands on a solid foundation.

And the only the Person who will evaluate and grade what kind of journey it has been is the One who invites us into that eternal dwelling, the One who is the Creator of time and life, not myself or others. If I only rely on the rewards from this One, I feel that we can now receive the affirmation of living in the present moment itself.

Today's sunset was already hidden by thick clouds about 10 minutes before it set on the horizon. My children and I enjoyed watching the rays of light leaking out of those clouds and turning the clouds on the edges red.

“Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;

yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.

Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Relent, LORD! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
Psalm 90:10-15
