Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 349 Keep It Simple and Stupidly Easy (The KISS Principle)

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 3...
Keep It Simple and Stupidly Easy (The KISS Principle)
In business and management, we often make things complicated. It's not uncommon to create thick business plans, hire specialists, overuse foreign words, and build systems that no one truly understands.

But there's one important principle we should always keep in mind: "Keep it simple and stupidly simple" (The KISS Principle).

What is the KISS Principle?
It literally means “Keep it simple, and stupidly easy.”
This is the idea that “you should make things as simple as possible”.
It doesn’t mean being careless or sloppy. Rather, it’s a crucial mindset that reminds us that “complexity doesn’t equal value”.

Applying The KISS Principle to Management

  1. Keep goals simple and clear
Ensure everyone on the team can explain what they’re working toward in a single sentence. Instead of abstract ideals or long-term dreams, set clear, measurable goals.
  2. Use language anyone can understand
Avoid technical terms and complicated expressions. Ensure your message is clear to everyone, from new hires to part-time staff.
  3. Keep Meetings Short and Focused
Endless meetings kill productivity. Be clear about "why we're meeting" and "what you need to decide", and only invite essential participants. This will save your company's time and energy.
  4. Simplify Procedures, Accelerate Decisions
Overly complex approval processes lead to missed opportunities. Leave the tasks to the team's discretion, allowing for quick judgments and actions.

Applying The KISS Principle to Company Building

  1. Start With One Thing and Do It Perfectly
Many successful companies began with just one simple product or service. Google started with search, and Amazon started with books.
  2. Avoid Overbuilding Before You Need To
It can be risky to build complex systems before you even have customers. Create what you need when you need it.
  3. Design for Everyone
Design with the assumption that anyone can use it, not just specialists. The ideal is something people can use without a manual.
  4. Offer Clear Pricing
Complicated pricing structures drive customers away. Keep your pricing simple and transparent. If customers think, "I don't understand, so I'll pass," your valuable offering won't reach them.
Conclusion
Being simple isn’t in any way being "shallow".
On the contrary, it’s a level only people who understand what’s truly important and can cut out the unnecessary.

If you feel something isn't working well right now, ask yourself: Can you make it simpler?

Keep It Short: Reaching Today’s Audience with 10-Second Videos

Keep It Short: Reaching Today’s Audience with 10-Second Videos

It’s no secret that attention spans are getting shorter. Especially among Generation X and younger, people are scrolling fast, clicking faster, and moving on in seconds. If your business is trying to grab their attention with long, drawn-out content—you’re already losing the game.

This is especially true when it comes to video marketing. The days of expecting people to sit through a 2-minute promotional video are over. Today, you have maybe 10 to 15 seconds to get your point across. If you don’t hook them fast, they’ll swipe away without ever hearing your message.

So what can you do?

* Focus on one idea per video. Trying to say too much at once is a guaranteed way to lose your viewer. Stick to one clear, sharp message.

* Start strong. You need to capture attention within the first 2 seconds—whether it’s a bold statement, a striking image, or a direct call-out.

* End with purpose. Once you've made your point, stop. If you want them to do something—visit your website, sign up, click—make it easy and obvious.

* Think mobile-first. Most people are watching your videos on their phones, usually with the sound off. Use subtitles, captions, and visuals that don’t require audio to understand.

Remember, your audience isn’t just competing for your attention—they’re being bombarded by hundreds of other videos, posts, and ads every day. If you want your message to cut through the noise, keep it short, sharp, and memorable.

Today marks six months since my kidney transplant.

It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed. This milestone is incredibly meaningful to me, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey.

Thanks to your encouragement, kindness, and care, I am doing well and feeling stronger every day. Recovery has had its ups and downs, but overall, I’m in good health and making steady progress. I’m especially thankful to the medical team, my family, friends, and colleagues who stood by me with unwavering support.

There’s still a long road ahead, but today, I’m celebrating how far I’ve come—and I couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you again for everything.

Why Do People Visit Social Med...
Why Do People Visit Social Media but Not Your Website?

Every time you post on social media, you get likes, comments, and attention. Yet, your website sees little to no traffic. Why is that?

There are four main reasons:

1. Social Media is a Pathway; Your Website is a Destination
People scroll through social media casually. Unless they have a specific reason, they won’t take the time to visit your website.

2. Social Media Delivers “Now,” While Your Website Shows the Big Picture
Social media is constantly updated in real-time. Websites, on the other hand, are often updated infrequently, which can make the content feel outdated.

3. There’s Not Enough Direction to the Website
Just posting a link isn’t enough. You need to tell people why they should click, and why now.

4. The Website’s Purpose Isn’t Clear
If users don’t immediately understand what they can do or gain from your site, they’ll leave quickly.

Social media should be the entry point—but the true business value should be created on your website, where trust, depth, and action converge.

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 348 Practicing Kettering's Law

スレッド
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 3...

Practicing Kettering's Law

Have you ever heard of Kettering's Law? Charles F. Kettering, an American inventor and former head of research at General Motors, is known for this famous quote:

"A problem well stated is a problem half solved".

Recently, I’ve come to realize just how powerful this statement truly is.

The First Step in Problem Solving is "Clarify the Problem"
For example, in a business setting, we often encounter vague issues like: "Sales are down", "Customer response is poor", or "The atmosphere in the office isn't great". But those statements alone won't solve anything.

If "sales are down", you need to specifically re-examine the situation and review the relationship between cause and effect.

Which products are declining in sales?
When did this trend begin?
In which markets are sales falling?
Have competitors made any moves?
Have there been internal changes within the company?

I call this process "increasing the resolution of the problem".

The Same Applies to Development, Design, and UX
This applies equally to system development, UI/UX design, and graphic design.

  • When someone says something is "hard to use", where and how exactly is it difficult to use?
  • When someone describes a design as “old”, is it an appearance issue or a structural issue?
  • When someone says "performance is slow", is it related to communication, processing, or the design itself?
Instead of accepting surface-level complaints and requests, we must dig deeper to identify and articulate the underlying structural problems. That’s the true starting point of any meaningful development or design process.

In design, when someone says, "Make it look cool", understanding the real purpose behind that request or the impression they want to convey leads to more effective, intentional design.

My Experience as a Business Owner
As a business owner myself, I constantly ask myself, "What is the essence of this challenge?" when making management decisions, such as:

  • Should we launch a new service?
  • Should we focus more on recruitment?
  • Should we review our sales system?
Every time, I start by gathering data such as numbers, feedback from the field, market changes, and redefining the problem itself.

Listening Skills and Writing Skills are Crucial
To clarify problems, listening skills and writing skills are essential. As a business owner, I consciously make an effort to listen carefully to employees and customers, and then organize those thoughts by writing them down on a whiteboard or in a notebook.

When the fuzzy thoughts in your head become written words, you can better organize and share that information, and the clues that point toward solutions start to appear.

So, the next time you face a challenge or a problem, try asking yourself:

Is this truly the 'problem' that I need to solve?
Have I accurately articulated this problem in words?

These questions are the first step in practicing Kettering's Law.
And if you can do that, perhaps you’ve already achieved half of the solution.

Company Lunch Today .... Ezells Chicken.

スレッド
Company Lunch Today .... Ezell...
We had a company lunch today, and it turned out to be more than just a meal—it was a moment of connection. We a bunch of chicken from our customer, Ezell’s Famous Chicken, and as always, it didn’t disappoint. The aroma filled the lobby as everyone gathered around, sharing food, conversation, and laughter. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside—just the way Ezell’s is known for in Seattle.

But more than the food itself, what mattered was the atmosphere it created. At PSPINC, I believe in building strong teams not just through projects and deadlines, but through shared moments like this. Sitting down together, talking about things other than work, and enjoying something as simple as a meal—it reminds us that we’re not just coworkers. We’re a team.

And the fact that the meal came from a customer made it even more meaningful. It’s a reminder that our relationships extend beyond business—they’re built on mutual respect and support.

Morning Capuccino
Every morning when I come to the office, the first thing I do is make myself a cup of cappuccino. I’ve heard that in Italy, cappuccino is considered a morning drink. I’m not sure if that’s true, but I like it. Do you know if cappuccino is really a morning drink in Italy?

Why Don’t American Cars Sell Well in Japan?
American cars are known for their power and unique appeal, but the reality is that they don’t sell well in Japan. Why is it so difficult for American cars to gain traction in the Japanese market? Here are seven key reasons:

1. Oversized Vehicles Mean Higher Taxes
American cars are typically larger with bigger engines, which means higher automobile taxes in Japan. This significantly increases ownership costs and discourages potential buyers.

2. Difficult to Obtain Garage Certificates
In Japan, owning a car requires a “garage certificate,” but large American cars often don’t fit in standard residential parking spaces, making it difficult or impossible to obtain this certificate.

3. Left-Hand Drive Is Inconvenient
Japan drives on the left side of the road, so left-hand-drive cars can be inconvenient—especially at toll booths or coin-operated parking lots—making them less practical for everyday use.

4. Won’t Fit in Parking Spaces
Especially in urban areas, American vehicles often can’t physically fit in mechanical or multi-level parking garages, which limits where they can be parked and used.

5. Concerns About Reliability and Fuel Efficiency
Compared to Japanese cars, American vehicles are often perceived as less reliable and more fuel-hungry. These negative impressions make buyers hesitant.

6. Lack of Maintenance and Warranty Support
There’s often insufficient infrastructure for servicing American vehicles in Japan. Parts may be hard to find, and timely repairs aren’t guaranteed, adding to ownership concerns.

7. Weak Dealer Network
There are few official American car dealerships in Japan. This lack of sales and after-service support makes customers feel uneasy about buying an American vehicle.

Bonus Note: Japanese Cars Dominate in the U.S.
Ironically, in the United States, the top-selling cars are almost always Japanese. Brands like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are commonly seen on American roads and enjoy high levels of trust and popularity.

In other words, while American cars struggle in Japan, Japanese cars thrive in the U.S. This discrepancy may be due not only to cultural or taste differences, but also to distinctions in product quality, reliability, and service infrastructure.

“The Largest Deal in History” — But Can Japan Really Afford It?

スレッド
“The Largest Deal in History” ...
“The Largest Deal in History” — But Can Japan Really Afford It?
In July 2025, President Donald Trump made a bold declaration:

“We’ve completed a MASSIVE deal with Japan — perhaps the largest deal ever. Under my direction, Japan will invest $550 billion into the United States, and 90% of the profits will go to America.”
It sounded like a monumental win for the U.S. economy. But beneath the dramatic statement lie serious questions—and numbers that simply don’t add up.

Missing Details
Trump’s announcement lacked important facts:

When will this $550 billion investment happen? Over one year? A decade? No timeline was given.
Who is making this investment? Is it the Japanese government using public funds, or is it private corporations like Toyota and Sony?
How will the U.S. receive 90% of the profits from foreign investment? That defies normal business logic.
If Japanese companies invest in U.S. factories, they usually retain the profits, minus taxes and wages. No company would accept losing 90% of its return. Unless there's a special tax agreement (which has not been disclosed), this claim doesn’t make financial sense.

A Reality Check
Here’s the part that really matters:
Japan’s entire national budget in 2024 was around $745 billion. That’s for everything—defense, healthcare, infrastructure, pensions. A $550 billion investment overseas would consume nearly 75% of Japan’s total annual budget.

Can Japan actually afford to do this? It seems extremely unlikely.

Even if we assume the investment comes from the private sector, it’s still a stretch. Japan’s total foreign direct investment worldwide in 2023 was about $135 billion. Investing $550 billion in just one country would be unprecedented.

Political Theater?
Without documentation, this appears more like a campaign talking point than a signed agreement. No Japanese official has confirmed this deal. In fact, some reports from Japan suggest profit-sharing will follow conventional investment rules—returns based on actual contribution, not a flat 90% to the U.S.

My Thoughts
As someone with deep interest in U.S.–Japan relations, this announcement sounds less like an economic reality and more like political marketing. The numbers are eye-catching, but without facts to back them up, they mean little.

Deals of this size don’t happen without:

Parliamentary approval in Japan
Legal contracts
Clear investment structures
Transparent timelines
Until those emerge, we must view this as a bold claim—not a confirmed deal.

Final Note
Yes, America wants foreign investment. Yes, Japan is a key ally. But business is built on incentives, not slogans. If the terms are unclear or unrealistic, no government or company will sign up.

Big numbers make big headlines. But responsible leaders—and voters—should always ask: Where’s the substance?
