Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 352 The Internet Is Just a Delivery Method
The Internet Is Just a Delivery Method
When we hear the word internet, we tend to imagine something mysterious, special, and an invisible vast space. However, in reality, the internet doesn't create, own, or fully control information. It's simply a delivery system. Its role, much like a postal service, is to transport information from one place to another.
Think of it this way:
Every email, photo, video, and document you send is a package. Whether it contains text, images, audio, or a livestream, the internet just carries it from Point A to Point B. For example, the internet delivers a message from your computer to a friend’s smartphone or from a company’s server to your browser.
Just like with physical package deliveries, the internet doesn't care about the content. It’ll transport anything as long as the data’s in a processable format. The package’s address is equivalent to an IP address, which indicates the network’s destination. Along the way, the data passes through devices like routers, switches, and servers, which act as distribution centers and delivery trucks.
It's important to remember that the internet itself doesn't enhance the value, accuracy, or appeal of your message. The content determines its entire value–the information and media inside you digital package. If you send garbage, they’ll receive garbage. If you send valuable, insightful, and beautiful information, they’ll receive that. The delivery method doesn't change the content’s quality; it only changes the speed, range, and accessibility.
Packages can also be stolen, lost, or delayed. Just as you’d take security measures before sending important physical documents, you shouldn’t send confidential online information without encryption and authentication.
It’s crucial that businesses also take this perspective. Many companies mistakenly treat the internet as the product itself, but it’s merely a carrier. What truly matters is the content inside the digital package—your ideas, products, and services you’re trying to deliver.
The internet is just the road.
Your content is the car.
If the car isn't worth driving, it doesn't matter how great the road is.
