A kappōgi (割烹着)

A kappōgi (割烹着) is a traditional Japanese garment, often translated as a “cooking apron” or “work smock.” Unlike Western aprons that usually cover only the front of the body, a kappōgi is worn over everyday clothing like a protective coat.
It typically has long sleeves with elastic cuffs, a high neckline, and ties or buttons at the back. The design fully covers the body, making it practical for cooking, cleaning, and other household chores without staining or damaging one’s clothes.
The kappōgi became especially popular in the early 20th century, when women wanted to protect their kimono while working in the kitchen. Today, it is still used in homes, schools, and even restaurants, symbolizing neatness, care, and traditional Japanese hospitality.
