ニャンコ空中大回転

今日も子供らとその友人らと共に川へ水遊びに行きました。
数メートルの高さの岩から川面めがけて飛び込むのですか、いつも不思議に思うことがあります。

なぜいとも簡単に彼らは宙返りをやってのけてしまうのだろう？
「私だってできるはずだ」と若い頃に何度か練習しましたが、一向にできないままなのです。空中で回転が止まってしまい、大抵は頭から逆さまに落ちることになります。背中を打ったり、腹を打ったりしてきました。
第一、空中で今現在どういう体勢になっているのかを把握することができないのです。
右か左か、上か下か、どっちが向いてるのか？

数回宙返りしながらも頭から入水したり、足から入水したり計画通りにできる人は、いったい体の向きをどうやってコントロールしてるのでしょう？不思議でなりません。

生まれつき平衡感覚に優れている人は、最初の1回目から簡単にやってのけてしまいます。
一方、何度練習してもできない私のような平衡音痴な人間もいるのです。

人には、できるできないがあってそれが良い。
それが当然。
それだから面白い。

昨日の日の入りは、何の雲のない地平線へ夕陽が沈んでいきました。

そして本日は地平線上に雲の帯が伸びています。
しかもその形は複雑で、ちょうど夕陽が山の端に隠れるすぐ上の部分だけ、その日輪の直径部分だけ雲に空間があって、その穴から強烈な赤い光が差し込んでいます。

一般的に「完全」とは、雲が全くない青空であったり、あるいは雲一面に覆われていたりのどちらかの状態を指す言葉として使われているようです。白か黒か、0か100かの世界のどちらかであるかのように。

そのどちらでもない複雑な雲の形状の時こそ、さらに美しい光が届けられているように思います。

"あなたがたのところに行ったときの私は、弱く、
恐れおののいていました。
そして、私のことばと私の宣教は、
説得力のある知恵のことばによるものではなく、
御霊と御力の現れによるものでした。
それは、あなたがたの信仰が、人間の知恵によらず、

Today I went to the river again with my kids and their friends to play in the water.
I've always wondered how can they jump from rocks a few meters high and make a few turns in the air, and then into the river.

Why do they so easily turn their body in the air?
I practiced a few times when I was younger, but I never got around to it.I would stop spinning in mid-air and usually end up falling head-first and upside down.I've been hitting my back and hitting my stomach.

First of all, I can't figure out myself what kind of position I'm in the air. Am I facing right or left, up or down?

How in the world does someone who can do a few somersaults and still get into the water head first or feet first followed a plan controlling the direction of their body? It's no wonder to me.

People who are born with a good sense of balance are able to do it easily from the first time.
On the other hand, there are people like me who can't get it done no matter how many times they practice.

People have a certain amount of things they can't do, and that's good.
That's natural.
That's why it's interesting.

Yesterday the sun set over the horizon with no clouds whatsoever.

And today, there is a band of clouds extending over the horizon.
And the shape of clouds is complex: just above where the sun is hiding at the edge of the mountain, just the diameter of the sun's ring, there is a space in the clouds that allows an intense red light to shine through the hole.

The word "perfect" seems to be generally used to describe either a blue sky with no clouds at all, or a full cloud cover.As if the world is either black and white, 0 or 100.

It's when the cloud formations are neither of these, and are complex, that they seem to deliver even more beautiful light.

“I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.

忍者がサンセットヨガ

本日の日の入りです。

この展望台に至る道がブロックされていました。
が、そこであきらめる私たちではありません。
はしごを使って別ルートからのアクセスを確保。
やはり私たち家族は忍者の末裔だったんだ

そしてお姉さんインストラクターの指導を受けて今日もサンセットヨガ。

夕食のデザートは、今朝摘み取ったばかりのブラックベリーでAkemiが作ってくれたパイ。

今日の1日も神様からのギフト。
感謝します。

"わがたましいよ主をほめたたえよ。主が良くしてくださったことを何一つ忘れるな。
主はあなたのすべての咎を赦しあなたのすべての病を癒やし

This is today's sunset.

The way to this lookout was blocked.
But we didn't give up there.
We used a ladder to get access from another route.

I knew our family was descended from ninjas

Then, with the guidance of the sister instructor, we had another sunset yoga session today.

The dessert for dinner was a pie Akemi made with blackberries she just picked this morning.

Today's day is also a gift from God.
I'm grateful.

「犬かき」は世界共通

湖のほとりにキャンプしましたので、私たちのアクティビティーも当然ながら湖に関することが多くなります。

その中で、愛犬キッパーに初めて泳ぎを教えると言うものがありました。

果たして泳げるのかどうか心配で、浮き輪を胴体にくくりつけたりもしたのです。
最初の頃は水を恐れていた様子ですが、慣れてくると自らスイスイと泳ぎ出すではないですか。見事な犬カキを披露してくれました。

ところで「犬カキ」のことを英語でも全く同じ言葉遣いで、Dog’s Paddle と言うのだそうです。
泳ぎを習っていない私たちは、誰もが水中に投げ出されるとこの犬カキを始めるはずです。この習性は、日本語話者にも英語話者にも共通して持っているものゆえなのでしょうか。

ここクレセントレイクは私たち家族にとって大変思い出深い場所です。初めてキャンプした場でもあり、以来毎年家族キャンプに来ています。

キャンプ生活とは、普段の便利な都会生活を離れての暮らしです。多くの不便さがあり、食事や睡眠など生活不可欠なことをするだけで多くの手間がかかります。そこでお互いの協力やコミュニケーション、忍耐などが試される場となります。

子供たちがそれらの家事分担を担う比率は年ごとに大きくなり、今や私たち親を追い越すまでに達しようとしています。

"天は神の栄光を語り告げ大空は御手のわざを告げ知らせる。
昼は昼へ話を伝え夜は夜へ知識を示す。"

We camped by the lake, so naturally our activities will be more lake related.

One of them was to teach our dog, Kipper, to swim for the first time.

I was so worried about whether she would ever be able to swim that we even tied a floatation ring to her body.

In the beginning, she was afraid of the water, but once she got used to it, she started swimming smoothly. They showed us a splendid performance of dog’s paddle.

By the way, I heard that the word "Dog's Paddle" in Japanese is the same in English also as "Dog's Paddle.

All of us who haven't learned to swim should start doing this dog's paddle when we are thrown into the water. Maybe it's a habit shared by both Japanese and English speakers.

Crescent Lake is a very memorable place for our family. It was also the first place we camped and we have been coming back every year since.

The camp life is a life away from the usual conveniences of city life. There are many inconveniences and a lot of hassle just to eat, sleep, and so on, even the essentials of life. This is where cooperation, communication and patience with each other are tested.

Every year, children are increasingly taking on more of the responsibility for these chores, and they are now outpacing us as parents.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;

オリンピック半島でキャンプ

テントの入り口に立って朝の食事ができていることを告げてくれた魔女

この夕日はいつものシアトルの定位置観測地点からのものではありません。そこにあるはずのオリンピック山脈は無く、水平線に直接太陽が没してしているのが見えるはずです。
山脈を越えた向こう側にある太平洋岸での日の入りです。

過去数日間、毎年我が家恒例の夏季キャンプをこのオリンピック半島で過ごしていました。

下の子供が歩けない頃からのファミリーキャンプですが、時は巡って今やキャンプを成り立たせている主役は子供たちとなりました。
彼らはこの数日間の食事のための献立を考え、その下準備をし、そして調理を受け持ってくれています。

今年はコロナ禍のためかキャンプをする家族連れが例年より多く、常にキャンプ場は満席です。このため娘は、朝7時には家を出て約4時間のドライブの後、チェックインできる時間にキャンプ場に到着、テントの場所を確保してくれました。私は息子と共にそれよりも数時間遅れて到着。

クレセントレイクと言う名前の通り三日月型をした湖のほとりにキャンプテントを張りました。その当日、1時間弱のドライブをして太平洋岸に出ての夕日鑑賞です。

今まで子供たちの世話をする一方でしたが、10代後半となった今や、すでに積極的に世話をしてくれるようになった彼らは頼もしい限りです。

ところでそのような頼もしい働きをしてくれる娘をこの期間中、「魔女」と呼んでいました。テキパキとどんな仕事もこなしてしまう不思議な力を持っているからです。10年ほど前に日本から遊びに来た甥が名付けた呼び名でもありました。

赤色に変色した写真は、そんな彼女がテントの入り口に立って早朝、「おはよう〜！朝ごはんができたよー」とまだ寝ている私たちを起こしに来てくれた時のものです。

This sunset is not from the usual Seattle stationary observation point. The Olympic Mountains are not there, as you can see, also you can see the sun sinking directly into the horizon.

This is the sunset on the Pacific coast across the mountains.

For the past few days, we have been spending our annual family's summer camp here on the Olympic Peninsula.

It's been a family camp since our youngest child couldn't walk, but time has passed and now it's the kids who are the stars of what makes the camp work.
They are responsible for planning, preparing, and cooking the meals for the next few days.

This year there are more families camping than usual due to the corona disaster and the campground is always full. Because of this, my daughter left the house at 7 a.m. and after a four-hour drive, arrived at the campsite just in time to check in and secure a spot for our tent. I arrived a few hours later than that, along with my son.

We set up our camping tent on the shore of a crescent-shaped lake, as the name suggests, Crescent Lake. That day, we drove less than an hour to go out to the Pacific coast to watch the sunset.

I've always been one to take care of our kids, but now that they're in their late teens, they're already taking an active role in taking care of us, which is very encouraging.

By the way, I called my daughter "witch" during this period of time because she is such a reliable worker and she has a mysterious power to do any kind of work quickly. My nephew called her "witch" when he came to visit us from Japan about 10 years ago.

The picture that turned red is of her standing at the entrance of the tent in the early morning and saying "Good morning! The breakfast is ready for you.”
This is when she came to wake us up when we were still asleep.

サンセット・ヨガ

初のサンセットヨガに挑戦しました。
インストラクターはAkemi。

彼女の言う通りに足を出したり、手をのばしたり、片足で立ったり.......私は片足でのバランスが取れずに、2秒後には体制を崩してしいました。しかし彼女は何秒であろうとも平気。
しかも片足を高く上げる。私は途中まで上げると、太ももをつってしまった。

その直前の懸垂では、私はまだ彼女には負けていないと安心したのですが、ヨガでは完全に敗北です。こんなにも体が固かったり、バランス感覚が欠如していたとは知らず、驚きとともにがっかりしました。

「自分はまだ大丈夫」と思っていても、それは独りよがりなものになりやすいものです。
他者の目で、他者のスタンダードと比較されて自分の位置づけが分かります。

ところで世界に存在している最大で絶対の他者とは、創造主なるお方です。この方からの視線や評価、それに価値観に照らされて自分自身を保つなら、あら不思議！
それ以外の小さな他者の評価や言葉に踊らされず、一喜一憂しない自立できる世界が開かれて来ます。

"いと高くあがめられ、永遠の住まいに住み、その名が聖である方が、こう仰せられる。「わたしは、高く聖なる所に住み、砕かれた人、へりくだった人とともに住む。へりくだった人たちの霊を生かし、砕かれた人たちの心を生かすためである。"
イザヤ書　57章15節

I tried Sunset Yoga for the first time.
The instructor was Akemi.

I did as she told me, legs outstretched, hands outstretched, and standing on one leg.... I couldn't balance on one leg and after two seconds I was out of alignment. But she didn't care how many seconds it took.

And she raises one leg high. When I was halfway up, I pinched my thigh.

Just before yoga, we did pull-ups, I was reassured that I hadn't been defeated by her, but in yoga, I was completely defeated.

I was both surprised and disappointed, not realizing that I was so stiff and lacking in balance.

It's easy to become complacent, even when you think, "I'm still okay.
You can understand your position in the eyes of others, compared to their standards.

By the way, the greatest and absolute other person in the world is the Creator. If you keep yourself in the light of this person's gaze, evaluation, and values, oh my goodness!

The world where you can be independent and not be swayed by the evaluations and words of others, and not be happy or sad all at once, will open up to you.

“For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
Isaiah 57:15

森の妖精への語りかけ

今日も近くの森に散歩に出かけました。
毎週のように来ているところですが、毎回新たな発見があります。

今回の発見は野生の朝顔です。
真っ白いその花は形からして朝顔そっくりなのですが、家人は「ブラックベリーの花だ」と教えてくれました。

茎はトゲだらけの上に実は真っ黒なブラックベリーの花が、あんなに可憐で純白であるとは！そのコントラストに驚きです。

そしてトトロの木を発見。
森の中にある大木を見つけると勝手にその名を付けるのですが、今回のは映画で見た一本の木ではなく、多くの幹が集まって束となっているものでした。

さっそく娘は、ひらひらと軽快な足取りで木登りを始めます。
幹の間から溢れる光線を背後から受けると、忍者と言うよりもまるで妖精のように見えたのでした。

後にその写真を見た娘自身は、「大自然の声を聞こうとする者には(妖精)語りかけて来るんだよ」なんて言うコメントを残していました。

そういえば、イエスの生涯の後半部分は、例え話を多用されています。

その例え話は、小学生が聞いてもよくわかる簡単な話です。
ところが、それが意味しているところは誰にもわからず、特に揚げ足取りをしようとしている時の宗教学者などの敵対勢力を煙に巻いてしまいました。とんちんかんにしか聞こえず、その場を去っていこうとする者たちに対してイエスは言われています。

「聞く耳のあるものは聞きなさい」

聖書を読んで理解するところの難しさは、結局ここにあるような気がします。文学的にその字面の意味を理解できたとしても、その文章が言わんとしている真意を汲み取る事は知的作業だけでは困難な場合が多いのです。

「神を調べてあげてやろう」と上から目線で聖書にアプローチしても、砂を噛むような思いにしか至らないはずです。

「主よ、お話ください。僕は聞いております」
(サムエル3:10)
これが、みことばが開かれていくときの私どもの姿勢です。

本日の夕日は、やはり日輪自体を見ることは出来ませんでした。
でも雲の向こう側には赤い太陽が確かに存在するのであり、空に浮かぶ雲を刻々と赤く染め上げて行く自然現象には、私たちを楽しませようとしている創造主の優しい意図を感じました。

Today we went for another walk in the nearby woods.
I come here almost every week, and each time I discover something new.

This time it was wild morning glories.
The pure white flowers look just like morning glories, but one of the family members told me that they are blackberry flowers.

I didn't realize that a blackberry flower with spiky stems and dark berries was so pretty and pure white! The contrast is amazing.

And then we found a Totoro tree.
We take the liberty of naming a large tree in the forest when we find one, but this one wasn't the single tree like we'd seen in the movie; it was a bunch of trunks.

My daughter immediately began to climb the tree with a fluttering.
She looked more like a fairy than a ninja as the rays of light flooded through the trunks from behind her.

My daughter, who saw this picture, later commented that "they speak to those who try to listen to the voice of nature".

Come to think of it, the latter part of Jesus' life is heavily laced with parables.
The parable is a simple story that a schoolboy could hear and understand.

However, no one could understand what it meant, and it smoked hostile forces, especially religious scholars and others at the time who were trying to fry it up. To those who only heard the pomp and circumstance and wanted to leave, Jesus said.

'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'

I think this is where the difficulty in reading and understanding the Bible lies after all. Even if we can understand the literal meaning of the text from a literary standpoint, it is often difficult to get the true meaning of what the text is trying to say through intellectual work alone.

Approaching the Bible from the top position , "I'll look up God, who are you?” This should only lead to chewing sand.

“Lord, speak to me. I am listening.”
(1 Sam 3:10)

This is our attitude as the Word of God is being opened.

Today's sunset, as expected, we couldn't see the sun wheel itself.

But the red sun is definitely there on the other side of the clouds, and the natural phenomenon of the clouds in the sky being tinted red by the minute, I felt the gentle intention of the Creator to entertain us.

風鈴に日本を感じて

昨日の夕方は小生の誕生パーティーが続いて、いつもの夕日を眺める機会を逸してしまいました。

家人から贈ってもらったギフトに風鈴がありました。彼女が4半世紀以上も前に東北で購入したものだそうですが、まだ1度も我が家に風鈴を吊るした事は無かったのです。

確かにそれは、日常とは異なる何か特別な音色を鳴らしているように聞こえました。

①日本そのものの響き

私の横浜の生家には子供部屋の軒下に風鈴がありました。

その音色を聴くと当時見た風景が思い出されます。夏の蒸し暑かったこと、蚊取り線香の香り、そして梅雨が終わった後のミンミンゼミの鳴き声などです。

② 異文化から見た日本文化

風鈴などはあまりに身近なため、私ならあえて購入しないものでも、外国人にとっては非常に珍しいものとなります。

かつて義母を連れて東北地方を旅したことがありました。電車の車窓から収穫した稲穂の束が天日に干してある田園風景に声を出して感嘆していました。

どこがきれいなんだろう、と私には気付かなかったのですが、彼ら外国人の目を通じて日本文化を見直す機会がいくつありました。

③静謐な世界への招きの響き

その音色には焦りや緊張の心を和らげ、和ませる神秘的なものを感じます。

お寺や教会の鐘の響きが私どもの心に伝えるのと同様なものと言えるかもしれません。

今後この風鈴を書斎に置いて、物事がうまく行かない時にその騒ぐ心を落ちつかせてくれる天からの音を聞かせてもらいましょう。

I missed my usual opportunity to watch the sunset yesterday evening because of my birthday party going on.

One of the gifts from my family member gave me was a wind chime. She had purchased it more than a quarter century ago in the northeast of Japan, but we had never once hung it in our house.

It certainly sounded like it was ringing something special and different from our everyday lives.

(1) The sound of Japan itself.

In the house where I was born in Yokohama, there was a wind chime under the eaves of the children's room.

The sound of the wind chimes reminds me of the scenery I saw in those days. It was hot and humid in summer, the scent of mosquito coils, and the sound of cicadas crying after the rainy season was over.

⑵ Japanese culture from the perspective of other cultures

Things like wind chimes are so familiar that even if I wouldn't dare to buy them, they are very rare for foreigners.

I once traveled with my mother-in-law to the Tohoku region of Japan, where a bunch of harvested rice ears were drying in the sun. From the window of the train car, she marveled aloud to see them in the rice field.

I didn't realize what was so beautiful about it, but I had several opportunities to review Japanese culture through the eyes of these foreigners.

(3) An inviting sound to a serene world

There is something mystical about its sound that soothes and comforts our impatient and tense hearts.

It may be said that it is similar to the sound of temple or church bells that conveys the message to our hearts.

I gonna keep this wind chime in my study room from now on, and let it be the sound from heaven that calms my noisy heart when things go wrong.

“He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

突然の聖務のため夕焼けを見ることが出来ませんでした。その代わりに今日のランチでにやけたオッサン顔をどうぞ

オレゴンでの夏休み

今朝は朝の5時からAkemiの目覚ましがけたたましく鳴り、何回もsnoozingでやり過ごしてから、6時に皆で湧き上がりました。
こんなに朝早く起きる事は滅多にないのですが、遊びのためには命をかけねばなりません。笑。

片道2時間弱のトレッキング。
まだ朝が早いためか、鳥のさえずり声が周囲にこだまするように聴こえて癒されます。

深淵を見つけてそこに真っ先にジャンプしたのはAkemi。
子供らは繰り返し光の中へ飛び込んでいきますが、私は1回でもう十分。水が半端なく冷たくて、10秒以上浸かっていると足がしびれてきます。ただエメラルド色に輝くその水は、大変綺麗で感動です。

岩肌を流れる清流に乗って滑り台のように滑るスライダーもやってみました。最後は滝壺のプールにドボンと落ちるのですが、水深が充分あって足も怪我することなく楽しめました。

しばし夏休みの1日を堪能しました。

This morning, Akemi's alarm went off loudly at 5am and kept going as snoozing function a lot of times. After we made it through, we all sprung up at 6:00am.

I rarely get up this early in the morning, but I have to risk my life for the sake of play. LOL.

The trek took less than two hours each way.
Maybe because it's still early in the morning, the chirping of the birds is soothing as it echoes around us.

We found an pool and Akemi jumped there first fearlessly.
My kids repeatedly jumped into the pool, but once was enough for me. The water is so cold that my feet go numb after more than 10 seconds in the water. However, the emerald color of the water is very beautiful and impressive.

We also tried the slider, which is a slide with a clear stream running down the rock face. At the end of the slider, we fall into the pool of the waterfall, but the water was deep enough to enjoy it without injuring our feet.

We enjoyed a summer vacation for a while.

"This is the day that the Lord has established. Let us enjoy and rejoice in this day."

サンショウウオ

娘から送られてきた画像ビデオもシェアさせて下さい。私が川辺で昼寝してる時に子供らはサンショウウオを発見していたようです。1度も見たことがないこの貴重な動物を見てみたかったものです。

Let me also share a picture and a video sent to me by my daughter. Apparently the kids were spotting a salamander while I was napping by the river, that I've never seen. I would have loved to see this precious animal.
