Tekizai-Tekisyo (適材適所)

A kimono is formal, usually made of silk, with multiple layers and a wide, decorative obi. It is worn for special occasions like weddings, tea ceremonies, or graduations and often requires assistance to put on.

A yukata is casual, made of cotton, lightweight, and simple to wear. It is typically worn in summer at festivals or ryokan, with a light obi and wooden geta sandals. In traditional inns, yukata are also provided as comfortable loungewear or even sleepwear, since they are easy to slip on and breathable.

“Tekizai Tekisho” literally means ‘the right material in the right place.’
While it is often used for people—assigning the right person to the right job—it also applies to tools, objects, and even clothing. For example, choosing the proper tool for a task, or selecting a kimono or yukata appropriate for the season and occasion, are also examples of “Tekizai Tekisho.”
