Japan Versus the U.S.: Saw-Making
The differences in culture and products between Japan and the U.S. are incredibly interesting, and in many cases, their respective histories and values impact them. Let’s look at saw-making as an example.
American culture tends to emphasize practicality and efficiency. Consequently, saws cut by pushing forwards. This is quite effective at quickly cutting large pieces of wood, which is why construction and carpentry workers widely use them. American product design pursues efficiency and productivity, which makes them suitable for large-scale projects.
On the other hand, Japanese culture tends to regard tradition and artistry highly. Japanese people designed saws that require people to pull them backward to cut, which allows for precise tasks and delicate wood processing. They use Japanese saws widely in tea ceremonies, woodworking, and traditional construction, which are crafts that require attention to detail.
The differences lie in aspects of product design rooted in culture and history and they reveal the individuality and values of both countries. Although I talked about saws, I feel that the differences between American culture, which emphasizes productivity, and Japanese culture, which emphasizes perfection, are well represented in the U.S. and Japan.
