How Illness Changed My Perspective
It’s been five months since my surgery. I went into the hospital the day after Russia launched its attack on Ukraine, so it’s been five months since then as well. The Ukrainian convergence is far from over. For my recovery, I’ve set a goal of walking a mile every day as part of my post-surgery rehabilitation. I’m amazed at the power of human resilience when I think about how much progress I’ve made since last March. At that point, I found it hard to even go to the bathroom, let alone walk a mile.
However, I’m afraid that if I hadn’t done anything, I still wouldn’t be able to move. Thankfully, I can walk now. But there were many times when I thought I would never get out of bed. Those who knew me at the time may have thought that I may not be able to walk or live a normal life again. That’s why I continue to walk and exercise. Even if I have to push myself a little harder every day. That way, I can be a little stronger than the day before.
When recovering, I slept at home. Therefore, I didn’t have time to think about my company because I was so busy taking care of myself. I attended internal company meetings via Zoom, but I couldn’t afford it at the time. However, I started thinking more about the company as I gradually got better. At first, I attended Zoom meetings while lying in bed. Then, I improved and started sitting up in bed and then on a chair. Eventually, I could come to work for a few hours at the office.
Now, I can come to the office almost every day. I spend every day wanting to be better than the day before. All of this was possible because I wanted to be able to move on my own as possible and I didn’t want to be a nuisance. Next, I’ll try flying out to San Diego for a business trip. Then, Japan. Everything will come to an end one day, but that day is not today. I now want to live, learn, and work as healthily and physically fit as possible. I’ve never been happy about being sick, but it gave me a chance to change my way of thinking. Moving forward, I’ll work a little harder. This is my soliloquy. Thank you for reading until the end. I wish you all the best and good health.

I walked just little over a mile today.
I did my mile-a-day walk today ... I did not walk a lot today because I had my dialysis this morning. I will try to play golf tomorrow.

Nothing is Unbreakable
Recently, KDDI, Japan’s second largest cell service provider, experienced a total outage of its au service. It then created a problem where people were unable to communicate with their au mobile phones. While it’s true to say au is responsible for this, it’s also important to remember that this problem was unexpected and unforeseen. Products made in Japan are designed to identify all problems and prevent them from happening. Therefore, many Japanese products are wonderful. Unfortunately, however, there can be a delayed response when unexpected and unforeseen problems occur.
The way Japan responds to big problems like this is different from the U.S. And not just in software. It goes without saying that products made in Japan are high-quality and difficult to break. But when they do break, many of them are difficult to repair. I often feel like U.S products are inferior quality-wise compared to those made in Japan. The advantage, however, is that replacing parts is easy because they’re also usually widely available. And the design itself makes it easy for people to repair.
It’s not easy to make something unbreakable because nothing is unbreakable. It’s inevitable that things will break, even things we think are unbreakable. It just depends on how long we’ve had it and how often we’ve used it. When running a data center like us, you try to at least have backup for everything just in case. From switches to cables to servers to power supplies and even air conditioning to the data center itself, we have backups for all of it.
But how did au handle it this time? I’m sure they had backup for their systems. In fact, I think a company that provides an infrastructure as large as au does would have triple or even quadruple the number of systems. I believe that the cause of this problem was something that couldn’t be prevented like a firmware update, even with backup. I look forward to future announcements on this issue.

Barely but Touching my Pinky Finger Tip.
I wasn't able to eat for three days and I lost over 5 lbs ... Another s=way that you should not lose weight. I was able to touch my pinky finger with my thumb. I did this about two month ago when I was recovering from the surgery.
For three days, I was not able to walk-a-mile ... I really feel terrible about it. This morning, I went to physical therapy and work out for an hour. I am still little weak and I will take it easy for couple more days.
