When I checked into my hotel in Japan, I noticed a small 折り鶴 (orizuru)—a folded paper crane—placed on the windowsill. At first glance, it may seem like nothing special. But to me, it reflected a quiet sense of care and attention. A small gesture, yes, but one that showed how much the hotel values its guests.
This is what the Japanese call “omotenashi.”
What is omotenashi?
Omotenashi is the Japanese spirit of hospitality—providing service with sincerity, grace, and attention to detail, all without expecting anything in return. It’s about anticipating the needs of others and making them feel truly welcome, often through subtle, thoughtful acts like this.
This is my wallpaper for a day.
