What is At-Will Employment?

Many U.S. states (including Washington State) apply the “At-Will Employment” principle, which lets employers terminate an employee at any time, with or without cause. Employees, in turn, can also resign for any reason.

Features of At-Will Employment:

An employer can dismiss an employee without any special reason.
Employees can resign at any time.
Dismissals for illegal reasons are not allowed.
The agreement contents shall prevail if there’s a labor contract or a labor union agreement.

Exceptions to At-Will Employment (Illegal Dismissals):

Discrimination dismissals (dismissals based on race, gender, age, disability, religion, etc.)
Retaliatory dismissals (dismissals for reporting harassment in the workplace, highlighting problems in the work environment)
Official duty protections (e.g., jury duty, military service, refusal to engage in illegal activities, etc.)
Contract breach (if the employment contract provides termination conditions, those conditions will prevail)

Even though the law protects “employment-at-will” employees, you can still consult labor authorities if you’ve been unfairly dismissed.
