「ダディ、日本の伝統的な楽器を習いたいんだけど。
琴とか教えてくれるところないかしら」

数日前の娘の問いかけ。
宮崎駿作の映画をこのところ見続けていて、その映画音楽に魅せられたらしい。

16〜 7年前にタコマでお会いした女性のことを思い出した。
この方は日本人でありながら流暢な英語で三味線を教えていらっしゃる。

連絡をとると、70代の年齢ながらも現役で教えていらっしゃると言う。
本日、娘とともにそのタコマにあるアカデミーにお邪魔した。

圧倒的な熱量を持った女性で、娘はたちまちにして虜にされたもよう。
三味線ばかりでなく、着付けや日本舞踊も教えてらっしゃるとのことで、そのクラスも受講することに。

これらのクラスは全て日本の伝統的な礼儀作法に則って教えられると言うもの。

「あの家に入った途端、日本に帰ってきたような感じがしたわ」とは、娘の印象。

今後は1時間余りを師匠の前で正座をしながら三味線の稽古に励む小さな撫子さん、がんばってね。

娘はその情熱をかける音楽・芸術を発見したようで、その喜びを爆発してるところを見て、厚いコロナの黒雲に閉ざされた隙間から漏れ出た光のように感じた。

この日はもちろん1日中雨で暗い雲に照らされた日中。
日の入りの時間にふと窓の外を見ると、オレンジ色の光が街路を照らしていた。

もしやと思って高台に出てみると、地平線辺りにだけ割れたような雲が連なり、そこでは光のページェントが織り成していた。

"Daddy, I'd like to learn a traditional Japanese instrument,
like the Koto.”

This was my daughter's question a few days ago.
She had been watching Hayao Miyazaki's movies for a while now and was fascinated by his music.

It reminded me of a woman I met in Tacoma sixteen or seven years ago.
She is Japanese and teaches shamisen in fluent English.

When I contacted her, she told me that she was in her 70s and still teaching.
Today, my daughter and I visited her at his academy in Tacoma.

She is an overwhelmingly passionate woman, and my daughter was immediately captivated by her.
I was told that she teaches not only shamisen, but also kimono dressing and Japanese dance, so we decided to take those classes as well.

All of these classes are taught in accordance with traditional Japanese etiquette.

As soon as we entered the house, my daughter felt like being back in Japan, that was my daughter's impression.

From now on, the little Natsuko will spend an hour or so sitting on the floor holding her knees in front of the master while practicing the shamisen.

I felt like a light leaking out from a gap closed by a thick corona black cloud when I saw her exploding with joy as she seemed to have discovered the music and art to which she is so passionate.

It was, of course, raining all day and the day was lit up by dark clouds.
At sunset, I looked out the window and saw an orange light illuminating the street.

I wondered if it was possible, so I went up to the high ground and saw that there was a pageant of light weaving through the clouds that seemed to break only around the horizon area.

息子の日

息子の日、おめでとうございます。

先日の娘の日に続いて今日が息子の日だそうです。

息子は魁(kai)といいます。
それはパイオニアであり秀逸したもの、と言う意味です。

私のような者からこのようなクールで優しくて、そして平衡感覚に富んだ息子が与えられていることに感謝し、神の聖名を崇めます。

Today is son's day, just like the daughter's day the other day.

My son is called "kai", which means "pioneer and superior" in Japanese KANJI letter, 魁.

I am thankful and adore God's holy name for giving us such a cool, kind, and balanced son from someone like me.

失敗を通して学んでいく

ここ最近クリスタル探しに凝り出した息子は2日前、友人と夢中になって山中に探してるうちに帰り道がわからなくなった。
日も傾きあたりが薄暗く寒くなってきたが、もと来た道に引き返そうとしてもその地点を見つけることができない。やむなく1時間をかけて再び道なき道を進んで山を登る。

雨で全身が濡れてしまったが、バックバックには着替えもなく、食料と言えるものはスナックバー1つしかない。
一夜を山中で過ごすことを覚悟したという。
そんなときたまたますれ違ったハイカーのアドバイスで小道を見いだすことができた。小道さえ見つければ彼らの車までたどり着くことができる。

安堵したのはいいが、次に息子の携帯電話がないのに気づく。
現時点を確認するため何度かバックパックから取り出しているうちに落としたらしい。

翌日、家人と彼は再び山中に分け行って携帯電話を探しに行く。
この時は彼らが遭難した場所までショートカットで進んだため見つからなかった。

再度翌日に彼らが彷徨したその足取りを忠実に辿って探しだした。
車から降りて歩き始めてから1時間以上、「発見した！」との喜ばしいメッセージが入ってきた。

息子が草むらの中に落ちている携帯を見つけた。
辺り一面は山道のないところで、確かに方向感覚を失うであろう場所。

いったい毎年日本でもたけのこやマツタケ狩に出かけた人々が迷い、帰れなくなった事故が発生している。

若い頃私自身も日本の山中で方向感覚を失い、また夜の帳が降りて帰り道がわからなくなって遭難しかけた事が何度かあった。

こうして振り返るとそれらは生きた教訓を与えてくれる貴重な失敗であった。
遭難したときの恐怖と寂しさ、不安と寒さの中に我が身を置いたときに初めて事前準備の必要性や大切さが痛感出来た。

どれだけ私が
「迷わないように目印となるものを記録せよ、帰り道を確保せよ、予備の食料や水、それに長袖ジャケットを持っていけ」と言ったとしても経験の浅い若者にその必要性はわからないだろう。

自ら限界に追い込まれることでしか体得できないレッスンがある。

若い時にドンドンと何事にも挑戦すれば貴重な経験値を積むことができる。

そしてドシドシと失敗してほしい。
生きた教訓を体得するために。

大人になってからの失敗は取り返しがつかない致命傷に至る場合があるので。

"また、ドラクマ銀貨を十枚持っている女の人が、その一枚をなくしたら、
明かりをつけ、家を掃いて、見つけるまで注意深く捜さないでしょうか。

見つけたら、女友だちや近所の女たちを呼び集めて、
『一緒に喜んでください。なくしたドラクマ銀貨を見つけましたから』
と言うでしょう。

あなたがたに言います。
それと同じように、一人の罪人が悔い改めるなら、
神の御使いたちの前には喜びがあるのです。」"

My son, who has been obsessed with looking for crystals lately, lost his way back home two days ago while he and his friend were looking for them in the mountains.
It was getting cold and dark, but they couldn't find his way back to where they came from.It took them an hour to climb up the mountain again, but they couldn't find their way back.

The rain has soaked them all, but they have no clothes in the backpack and only one snack bar for food.

They were prepared to spend the night in the mountains.
Then, on the advice of a hiker who happened to pass them, they found a trail.As long as they could find the trail, they would be able to reach their car.

They were relieved, but then my son noticed that his cell phone was missing.
He had dropped it while he was taking it out of his backpack several times to check on the current situation.

The next day, he and one family go to the mountains again to look for his lost cell phone.
This time they did not find it because they took a shortcut to the place where they were distressed.

Again the next day they retraced their wandering steps to find it.
Over more than an hour after they got out of the car and started walking,
"I found it!” I received a delightful message.

My son found his phone in the grass.
The whole area around them was devoid of mountain trails, a place where they would surely lose their sense of direction.

Why is it that every year in Japan, people who go out to hunt for bamboo or matsutake mushrooms get lost and are unable to return home?

When I was young, I lost my sense of direction in the mountains of Japan and lost my way after dark.

When I look back, those were valuable mistakes that give me a living lesson.
When I put myself in the fear and loneliness, anxiety and cold in the midst of the disaster, I was able to realize for the first time the necessity and importance of preparation.

Inexperienced young people won't understand the need for this even if I told them to record their landmarks so they don't get lost, to find their way home surely , and to take extra food, water and a long-sleeved jacket.

There are lessons that can only be learned by pushing themselves to their limits.

If you challenge yourself at a young age, you will gain valuable experience.

And I want you to do your best to fail.You will learn a living lesson from your mistakes.

If you make mistakes after you become an adult, you may be irreversible and fatal.

The Parable of the Lost from what Jesus taught.

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search
carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

「娘の日」というのがあるらしいです

昨日が国家的な娘の記念日だったそうです。
こんな日があるなんて初めて聞きました。
米国だけのことなのか世界中でのことなのかは分かりません。

こんなに尊い娘が私に与えられていることに感謝。
たった今、アリゾナのグランドキャニオンからのロードトリップの帰り道にあります。彼らの無事をの帰宅を祈りつつ。

Yesterday was a national daughter's day.
I've never heard of such a day before.
I don't know if it's only in the United States or all over the world.

I am grateful that I have been given such a precious daughter.
She is on her way back from a road trip from the Grand Canyon in Arizona right now.Praying for their safe return.

夕日よりも明るく美しいお嬢さん

シアトルに戻って以来、煙に町中がすっぽりと包まれていて、楽しみとしている夕日を見ることも叶いません。

そんな徒然を感じていた今宵、太陽よりも明るくそして美しいお嬢さんがおいでくださって、私どもの心を照らしてくれました。

サクッと焼きうどんを手作りして私たちに振る舞ってくれて後は、これも手作りによるブルーベリーパイをデザートにいただきました。
このブルーベリーは野生のものから採集したものです。

徹底したヴィーガンの彼らの作る食品はどれも健康的に優れて、安心していただくことができます。

今週いっぱいはまだまだ煙に覆われた日々が続くことでしょう。
この高台でサンセットヨガができるのはいつの日になることやら。

Since I returned to Seattle, the smoke has completely enveloped the whole city and we can't see the sunset I was looking forward to.

This evening, a young lady, brighter than the sun and beautiful, came to light up our hearts.

She prepared and served us some fried udon noodles and then we were treated to a blueberry pie for dessert.
These blueberries were collected from the wild.

They are thoroughly vegan and all of the food they make is excellent and healthy and safe to eat.

There will still be a lot of smoke in the air throughout the week.
I wonder when we'll be able to do sunset yoga on there.

イサクのように、水のように

森の中を今日も散策しました。
大抵新しいルート選ぶのですが、今回選んだルートは途中で柵が設けられて通行禁止となっていました。

柵を乗り越えられなくは無いですが、無理強いする事はありません。

別のルートを選びそれを楽しみました。
歩くこと自体が目的の山道です。
どこを通っても、基本的に景色は同じ。

私どもの行く道がブロックされたとて、慌てる事はありません。
「これが俺の行く道だ」と言って自我に固執する事は愚かなことです。

押してみてうまくいかないときは、
引いてみたら良いかと思います。

今日の夕焼けは昨日と比べると、紅の色が一段と増して鮮やかさが際立っていました。

同じ太陽からの光線ですが、その色合いについては光線自体が決定することはできません。

決定権は周囲の雲にあります。
その分厚さや配置などによって夕日の色合いが変わります。

私たちそれぞれもその置かれている時代や環境、関係している人々によって、創造者から受ける光を反映しているのかもしれません。

"イサクは、彼の父アブラハムの時代に掘られて、アブラハムの死後にペリシテ人がふさいだ井戸を掘り返した。イサクは、それらに父がつけていた名と同じ名をつけた。

We went for another walk in the forest today.
We usually choose a new route, but the route we chose this time was fenced off on the way.

It is not impossible to get over the fence, but there is no need to force it.

We chose another route and enjoyed it.
It's our purpose to walk itself in a mountain path.
Wherever we go, the views are basically the same.

We don't panic that our path is blocked.
It is foolish to cling to your ego, saying, "This is the path I'm on.”

If you try to push and it doesn't work,
I think it's a good idea to pull it off.

Today's sunset was much brighter and more vivid in its red color than yesterday's.

The rays of light are from the same sun, but the rays themselves cannot determine their color.

The decision lies with the surrounding clouds.
Their thickness and placement will change the hue of the sunset.

Each of us may also reflect the light we receive from our creator, depending on the time and environment we are in and the people involved.

“Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 湖で無人島まで泳ぎ渡る

ワシントン州南部に広がるセントヘレナ火山。
そのすぐ近くの山奥に広がっているColdwater Lake へ行ってきました。

この湖の縁を1周するように人がようやく通れる幅ほどの狭いトレイルが続いています。そこをマウントバイクで駆け進み、人がいないプライベートビーチを目指します。

早速湖に入ってみると名前ほど水は冷たくなく、泳ぐのに適していました。湖の中ほどにある無人島が目の前に見えます。

子供らはその無人島まで泳いで行こうかなんてことを話し合っているので、またまた老婆心を現した私は反対意見を伝えます。

ほとんど聞く耳を持たないまま、一人の家人が水に飛び込むとそのまま島を目指して泳ぎだしました。子供らも次々にそれに続きます。やむなく私も彼らの後追って泳がざるをえません。

距離にすると120-130メーターほどだと思います。
数キロ遠泳したことのある私自身は問題感じませんが、子供らがそれだけの距離を泳いだ記憶は無いのです。
もし途中で足でもつったら、
体力が尽きたら、
溺れたら、、、
と変な想像ばかりをしてしまうのです。

彼らは恐れる事もなくスイスイと無事に島までたどり着くと、私の到着を待たずにその島の頂上まで手足を使ってはい登っていました。

昨日は彼らがプールに飛び込むその高さを心配し、
そして今日は泳ぐ距離の長さを心配しました。

親の心配をよそに、
子供らは親の気がつかない間に成長し、
いつの間にか親を追い越してしまってるようです。

"一方、少年サムエルは、主にも人にもいつくしまれ、ますます成長した。"

The St. Helena Volcano spreads out in the southern part of Washington State.
We went to Coldwater Lake, which is located deep in the mountains near the volcano.

There is a narrow trail that circles the edge of the lake and is barely wide enough for a person to pass.We rode our bikes there to get to a private beach where there was no one there.

The water is not as cold as the name suggests, and it's a good place to swim.We could see an uninhabited island in the middle of the lake.

The kids were discussing the possibility of swimming to the uninhabited island, and I, again showing my old parentheses, spoke out against it.

Almost deafeningly, one of the family members jumped into the water and started to swim towards the island.One by one, the children followed suit.I had no choice but to swim after them.

There was about 120-130 meters.
I had swum a few kilometers before, so I didn't have a problem with it, but I couldn't remember any of the children swimming that far.

If they get a foot injury along the way.
If their strength is exhausted.
If they drown...
I couldn't help but imagine such things happened.

They didn't have to wait for me to arrive, they made it to the top of the island.

Yesterday I was worried about how high they would jump into the pool.
And today I worried about the length of the swim.

Despite my parents' concerns,
Children grow up without their parents' knowledge.
It seems to have overtaken their parent before I know it.

“And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.”

冷泉プールに飛び込んで

夏休み第二弾はやはりオレゴン州の山奥にある天然プールへ。
Tamolitch Blue Pool。
Portlandから約2時間半の道のりを南西に向かう。

ここのプールがユニークな点は、これだけ広くてまた深遠なプールであるにも関わらず、どこからも流水の注入口がない点。

ホット・スプリングス(温泉)ではなくて、コールド・スプリングス(冷泉)です。付近の山々からの地下水脈を通った水が、このプールの底から湧き出しているのです。その数量たるや大したもので、いっぱしの川を形成しています。McKenzie River です。

昼前にここに到着したところ、既に数十人の人々がプールを取り囲んでいます。しかし誰もあえてその中に飛び込む人はいません。

「ボーイズたちはどこに行ったんだ」と娘に聞くと、既にあの高台に登っているとのこと。まさかあの上から飛び降りるつもりじゃないだろうなぁと見ていると、家人が見事に飛び込んだ。

その後カイが続こうとしているので、「やめろ！飛び込むなぁ〜！」と叫んだ。図らずもそんな絶叫が録画録音されてしまった(汗)。慌てふためく親バカの声を聞いてやってください(笑)。

その直前に崖の上から下を見下ろすと、想像以上に高く見えて文字通り私の足がすくんだのです。着水の打ち所が悪ければどんな怪我するか分からないし、また突然の冷水は心臓麻痺に至るかも知れない。

そんな老婆心むき出しの親心を露とも知らずに飛び込んでしまったボーイズたち。成功してみれば父親のできないことを完遂した男としてヒーロー扱いを受けていた。

私は水面0センチの地面から飛び込んでみました。
つ・め・た・い。

あまりの冷たさに数秒間も水につかることができず、すぐに岸に上がるのですが、皮膚はその時ジンジンとした痛みに襲われます。
その痛みが数秒後には火のような熱さに変っわたように感じました。こんなこと初めて経験しました。

水はどこまでも透き通っています。
そして温泉成分のようなミネラルを始めとした鉱物が水に溶け込んでいる事でしょう。

もう少しだけ耐えられるだけの水温だったら、多くの人に楽しんでもらえるに違いありません。

"エルサレムには、羊の門の近くに、

ヘブル語でベテスダと呼ばれる池があり、
五つの回廊がついていた。

その中には、病人、目の見えない人、足の不自由な人、
からだに麻痺のある人たちが大勢、横になっていた。"

"そこに、三十八年も病気にかかっている人がいた。
イエスは彼が横になっているのを見て、
すでに長い間そうしていることを知ると、
彼に言われた。「良くなりたいか。」

病人は答えた。「主よ。水がかき回されたとき、
池の中に入れてくれる人がいません。
行きかけると、ほかの人が先に下りて行きます。」

「起きて床を取り上げ、歩きなさい。」"

Our second summer vacation was also to a natural pool located deep in the mountains of Oregon.
Tamolitch Blue Pool.
It's about a two and a half hour drive southwest of Portland.

What makes this pool unique is that, despite being so large and deep, it has no inlet for running water from anywhere.

It's not a hot spring, but a cold spring.Water from the nearby mountains gushes out of the bottom of this pool through underground water veins. This water pool origins the McKenzie River.

When we arrived here before noon, there were already dozens of people surrounding the pool.But no one dares to jump into the pool.

When I asked my daughter where the boys went, she told me that they were already up on that high ground.As I watched, I didn't think they were going to jump off of that top, but surprisingly one of my family guy jumped in beautifully.

Kai then tried to follow, so I said, "Stop! Don’t jump in! I screamed.Unbeknownst to me, such a scream was recorded and recorded (sweat).Listen to the flustered parental idiot, lol.

Just before that, I looked down from the top of the cliff and it looked higher than I imagined it would be and it literally knocked me off my feet.

What if landed on the water in the wrong place, what kind of injury I would get, and the sudden cold water could lead to a heart attack.

The boys jumped into the water with no regard for the old parental love.When they succeeded, they were treated as a hero for completing what their father couldn't.

I jumped in from the ground 0 inches above the surface of the water.
It was soooo cold water.

It was so cold that I couldn't stay in the water for a few seconds, and I quickly made it to shore, but my skin was then hit with a zinging pain.
After a few seconds, the pain felt like it had turned to a fire-like heat.I had never experienced anything like this before.

The water is infinitely clear.
The water is crystal clear and there are minerals in the water, including minerals from the springs.

If the water was just a little bit warmer, many people would be able to enjoy it.

“Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [ ] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.”

高いところから日本を高見の見物？

日本は今、100℉を優に超える猛暑とのことです。
日本の皆さん、残暑お見舞い申し上げます。

私にできる事は、涼しそうなシアトルの夕焼けを紹介して一時の涼を感じてもらうことです。
今夕は半袖では寒いほど冷え込みました。
思わず暖房を入れたくなったほどです。

どうですか、少しは涼しく感じますか？
って、高見の見物になるかな？
実際高いところから夕日を眺めているんですけど。

"鉄は鉄によって研がれ、人はその友によって研がれる。"
箴言　27章17節

夕日を共に見た後に娘が調べあげていた聖書の一節です。
私は彼女を大分研いであげたみたい。

Japan is experiencing a heat wave of over 100℉.
I'd like to express my sympathy for the summer heat in Japan.

What I can do is to introduce a cool Seattle sunset and let you feel cooler for a while.
It's been so cold this evening that it's hard to wear short sleeves.
I was tempted to turn on the heat in my room.

How do you feel, do you feel a little cooler?

This is the Bible verse my daughter was looking up after we watched the sunset together.
I think I sharpened her up a lot.

日本語の特訓を開始

昨日できなかった日本語学習教材を買うためにダウンタウンにある紀伊国屋書店へ。
これを使って早速我が子達に日本語の特訓をはじめました。
改めて私自身が普段使っている母国語を俯瞰して見る機会ともなります。

漢字の読み方に音読みと訓読みがあり、さらにそれぞれのケースに異なる読み方が、言葉の組み合わせによって存在していたとは。。。
改めて日本語が学習困難な言葉であると発見しました。

日本人が英語学習に費やすエネルギーのザックリ3倍はかかってるのではないかしらん？
こんな言語にも果敢にチャレンジしていく娘を誇らしく思いました。

おやつや夕食、そしてそのデザートまでフルコースを子供たちが協力して作ってくれました。日本語の勉強も白熱していくつもの単元をこなしましたので、いつもの展望台に登るチャンスを逸しました。

その代わり屋根の上に登ってみました。

高いところに登ると四方を見渡すことが出来て、言えば鳥の目で世界を眺めることができます。外国語を学習することで、自らの母国語がどういうものであるのかを客観的に見直すことにつながります。
そして聖書に親しむと、世界情勢から世界終末に至るプロセスを俯瞰することができるのです。それが不確実な今日を生き、明日に向かう力となります。

"しかし今、ゼルバベルよ、強くあれ。──主のことば──エホツァダクの子、大祭司ヨシュアよ、強くあれ。この国のすべての民よ、強くあれ。──主のことば──仕事に取りかかれ。わたしがあなたがたとともにいるからだ。──万軍の主のことば──

I went to Kinokuniya bookstore in downtown to buy some Japanese learning materials that I couldn't get yesterday.
I used these to start teaching my children Japanese.
It gave me a chance to take a bird's eye view of my own native language, which I usually use.

It mage me realize that there are two ways to read kanji, onyomi and kunyomi, and that there are different readings for each case, depending on the combination of words.
Once again, I discovered that Japanese is a difficult language to learn.

It must take about three times as much energy as the Japanese spend on learning English.
I was so proud of my daughter for daring to take on such a language.

The kids worked together to make a full course of snacks, dinner, and even the dessert.We worked diligently on several units of Japanese language study, so we missed our usual chance to climb the observation deck.

Instead, we climbed up to the roof.

When you climb up high, you can look out in all directions and, let's say, see the world with a bird's eye view.Learning a foreign language helps us to objectively see what our own native language is all about.

And when we become familiar with the Bible, we can have a bird's eye view of the process from world affairs to the end of the world.This gives us the strength to live in the uncertainty of today and to face tomorrow.

“But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD.
‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong,
all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD,
‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
“This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt.
And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
“This is what the LORD Almighty says:
‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,
the sea and the dry land.
I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come,
and I will fill this house with glory, ’ says the LORD Almighty.
‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
‘The glory of this present house will be greater than
the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty.
‘And in this place I will grant peace, ’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
