Twenty-one years ago, in June of 2000,
I visited Okinawa for the first time.

As soon as I stepped out of the air-conditioned Naha Airport terminal building, the heat and humidity hit me.

It was a moment when I felt with my whole body that this was a tropical country, different from the mainland Japan.

I was welcomed by my friend Pastor O, and stayed with him and his family for about a week at his church building in Urasoe City.

This was the first time I learned that there was an anniversary of the end of the battle in Okinawa, and I also saw and heard about the horrific war that had been fought there involving the general population.

The cornerstone of peace monuments stands on the hill of Mabuni.
The names of Pastor O's relatives who were victims of the war are engraved on it.

Even nursing students and junior high school students were mobilized to fight in the battle and live in caves as evacuees and hospitals.

The sad history of Okinawa was not just a story of the past, but an experience that came close to my heart.

Okinawa celebrated "Memorial Day" on June 23.

On this day, a memorial service for the war dead was held at the Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni, Itoman City, on the day when the systematic fighting of the Battle of Okinawa ended 73 years ago, in which more than 200,000 people were killed in both Japan and the U.S., and a quarter of the people of Okinawa lost their lives.
At the ceremony, Michiko Sagara, 14, a junior high school student at Minagawa Junior High School in Urasoe City, recited a poem of peace.

I will introduce that poem as fellow.
thanks for the App. for help of the translations.

“I am alive, stepping on the earth that carries the heat of the mantle, receiving the pleasant humid wind, feeling the smell of grass in my nostrils, and listening to the distant sound of the tide.

I am alive now.
How beautiful is this island where I live.
The shining blue sea, the waves splashing against the rocks, the neighing of goats, the murmuring of the stream, the paths leading to the fields, the green of the mountains sprouting up, the gentle sound of the sanshin (Okinawan guitar), the rays of the sun.

What a beautiful island I was born and raised on.

I feel the island with all my senses and sensitivity. My heart slowly heats up.
I am living in this moment.
The splendor of this moment, the loveliness of this moment, becomes the peace of the present, and it spreads through me.
How can I express this feeling that is so irresistible?

The precious now, the irreplaceable now, the now in which I live.

73 years ago, the day my beloved island turned into an island of death. The chirping of birds turned into screams of fear.
The gentle sound of the sanshin (Okinawan guitar) was lost in the roar of the bombing.
The blue sky was obscured by the iron rain.
The smell of grass became muddy with the stench of death, and the surface of the sea, once shining with light, was filled with battleships.
Flames spewed from flamethrowers, the cries of infants, burned-out houses, and the smell of gunpowder.

The earth shaking from the impact of the bombs. The sea stained with blood. People transformed like evil spirits of mountains and rivers. Memories of fierce battles with screaming and snarling.
Everyone was yet alive.

They were no different from me, living their lives to the fullest. Their lives, their futures. I envisioned them without a doubt.
They had families, friends, lovers. They had jobs. I had a purpose in life.

We rejoiced in the small happiness of each day. They were human beings, just like me, living hand in hand.
And yet... They were destroyed and taken away from me.
We lived in different times. Just because of that. Innocent lives. Those days that they used to live as a matter of course.

The hill of Mabunin. The calm sea below.
Everything about this island, sad and unforgettable.
I hold my hands tightly and swear. Thinking of the lives that were taken. I swear from my heart.
As long as I live, I will never forgive the war that has cost so many lives.

I will never let the past become the future again.
I pledge that I will never allow war, which has cost so many lives, not make the past the future again.

To create a world in which life can be lived, in which life can be cherished, and in which no one can violate it.
We must be willing to make the effort to create peace.

You will feel it. You see the beauty of this island.
You know it. You know the sadness of this island.
And you, like me, are living in this moment together.
We are living in the present together.
So you must understand.
The meaninglessness of war. Real peace.
That there is no such thing as peace that can be gained by having the foolish power of war.

Peace is about living a normal life.
Peace is about living life to the fullest.

I am living in the present. Together with everyone.
And I will continue to live. Cherish each and every day. Thinking of peace. Praying for peace.

Because the future is an extension of this moment.
In other words, the future is the present.

This is my island, my favorite island. My island, my island of pride. And all the lives that live on this island. My friends, my family, who live with me in the present.

Let's continue to live together.
From this beautiful hometown, surrounded by blue. Let's send out true peace.
Let each one of us stand up and walk into the future together.
Blowing in the wind on the hill of Mabuni, my life is ringing.
Past and present. Resonance of the future.
Deliver the requiem. To the past of sorrow.
Life, echo. To the living future.
I will live in the present.”
