目の前で交通事故

While driving 60mph in the Mt. Diablo tunnel near Oakland today, I came very close to being involved in an accident. I heard the tires of the car in front of me suddenly screech followed by a few of loud bangs. Then I saw the car nearest me stop abruptly perpendicular to my car. It was at a curved part of the tunnel, so I had an obstructed view of the traffic jam that began there.
Fortunately, there was enough space between me and the cars in front and behind to avoid a crash. I feel sorry for those guys left there in the three cars while passing them and thankful they weren't hurt. It was my first time to witness a car accident right in front of me. It reinforces the need to always leave enough space between me and other cars.

本日、オークランド近くのダイアブロ山のトンネル内を１００キロほどのスピードで運転中、もう少しで事故に巻き込まれるところでした。
目の前を走る車のタイヤがスリップする甲高い音が聞こえた直後、数回のドスンという鈍い衝突音が鳴ったのです。
目の前の車は突然真横になって止まるのが見えます。
そこはトンネル内でカーブが始まる場所であり、ちょうどそこから渋滞が始まっているのを見通せないところ。
幸運にも私とそれら前方の車も、また後方の車とも十分な車間距離があり衝突を避けることができました。
その３台の車に残された方々をとても気の毒に感じながら真横を通り過ぎました。
また、負傷はしていない様子でしたので感謝しました。
目前で交通事故の瞬間を目撃した最初となりました。
車間距離だけは充分に設けなくてはならないと再認識した次第です。
