大提灯まつり

Last night was the Grand Festival at Suwa Shrine, but due to anticipated bad weather,

I decided not to go.

This is the Grand Lantern Festival at Suwa Shrine in the former Isshiki Town of Hazu

District (now Nishio City).

The origin of the Grand Lantern Festival dates back 450 years. In early autumn, sea

demons would appear every night, wreaking havoc on people, livestock, and crops.

The villagers, in desperation, offered the "Mashizume no Tsurugi" (Sword of Demon

Suppression) before the deity of Suwa Shrine and lit large bonfires, praying for the

demons to be driven away.

As a result, the damage ceased.

昨夜は諏訪神社の大祭でしたが、天候不順が予想され、行くのは止めました

旧幡豆郡一色町（現在は西尾市）の諏訪神社の大提灯まつりです。
　大提灯祭りの起源は今から遡ること４５０年。
初秋になると毎夜海魔が現れ、人畜農作物を荒ら
していました。そこで村人たちは諏訪神社のご神前
に魔鎮剣（ましずめのつるぎ）を奉り、大篝火を
焚いて悪魔退散を祈ったところ被害が無くなったと
言われています。
