For Father's Day - Part 6

Is the Bible advocating male chauvinism?

I was 23 years old when I graduated from seminary.
My first step as a pastor was in a small fishing village in Mie Prefecture.

There was an American woman missionary who was running the church by herself, and I was appointed as an "evangelist" to assist her as the pastor.

If the Bible forbids women to stand as religious leaders, was the appointment made by the church group at that time a mistake?

The woman missionary had been working single-handedly on a mission to Japan for more than ten years before I was born, and she had already spent more years than my age planting church in that fishing village.

I would like to reiterate the words of the Bible.

“I will not allow a woman to teach or to rule over a man, but rather to be quiet.
For Adam was created first, and then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived.
But the woman was deceived and made a mistake.”
(First Epistle to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 11-14)

The fact that Adam was the first to be created.
I also understand that the Bible clearly teaches that men have greater authority because they were created first.

I have been pointing out that this doctrine is not limited to one church, but is a universal teaching that can be applied to all churches across all time periods.

And Eva was deceived and seduced by the serpent and fell into sin.
It seems that women are rich in emotions and sentiments, but they also have a tendency to make short-sighted judgments when they are attracted to sweet things.

In other words, they are lacking in judgment.
(I'm sorry, ladies!).

A 23 year old young man who just graduated from seminary
and a 73 year old experienced female missionary who is the oldest person in the church group.

So, which one of us has better judgment?

Not only do I have no idea what is right and wrong in a completely new relationship in the local church, but I also have no idea what it means to run an economy by faith or to serve people.
Also, I didn't even know how to cook a meal.

I had my own kitchen, but after a few months, I abandoned it and spent three meals a day in the kitchen of the female missionary.
In other words, I was fed three meals a day by the missionary.

If I had been the leader of the church group at that time
I would have made the exact same appointment decision.

You can't just take one part of the Bible that says, "A woman should not teach or rule over a man" and conclude that a man must always be in a position above a woman.

The Bible also has this teaching.

"In the same way, young men, obey your elders.
(First Epistle of Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 5)

The "young people" would have been me at the time.

“Elders" is the Jewish term for people who have been through life for many years, have matured as person, and are in charge of the leadership of the organization.
There is no such thing as a woman or a man. There are female prophets and leaders in the Old Testament, and women were allowed to be stewards, the leaders of the church in the New Testament.

The Bible should not be judged singularly in terms of a single verse.
It must be understood through a process of synthesizing and harmonizing related passages, even those that seem to conflict with each other.

I'll keep going.
