The Importance of Mobile-First Marketing Strategies

スレッド
The Importance of Mobile-Firs...
Remember when developers primarily designed websites for desktop computers? Today, mobile reigns supreme, so businesses that don’t prioritize a mobile-first strategy are missing out on major engagement and revenue opportunities. According to Statista, smartphones accounted for over 75% of retail site visits in the U.S. and generated about 66.66% of online shopping orders in the last quarter of 2024. This isn’t just a trend; it’s the reality of how customers interact with businesses today. Because of this, more and more companies are wisely adopting a mobile-first marketing strategy.

A mobile-first strategy includes more than just having a mobile-friendly website; it reshapes your business to prioritize mobile users first. Specifically, being mobile-first involves prioritizing your business’s mobile app and mobile web capabilities over the traditional desktop experience. The core idea is simple yet powerful because if you can create a seamless mobile experience that converts users into customers, then the experience on larger devices will naturally follow.

Benefits of Embracing a Mobile-First Strategy

Adopting a mobile-first marketing strategy unlocks a wealth of benefits for your business, including:
  • Increased customer reach: By prioritizing the platform users spend most of their time, you naturally expand your potential customer base and open doors to new markets.
  • Stronger user relationships: Mobile apps provide consistent touchpoints to build brand awareness and foster engagement.
  • New revenue channels: Mobile apps offer diverse monetization strategies, like in-app purchases, subscriptions, and target ads.
  • Critical data insights: Prioritizing your mobile app provides invaluable insights into user behavior over time, empowering you to make informed, data-driven decisions that fuel growth and help you achieve ambitious targets.
  • Superior customer experience (UX): Mobile apps offer more diverse and tailored UX options compared to web solutions. This lets you craft experiences suited to customer preferences, optimizing for revenue and enhancing your brand reputation.
Ignoring the power of mobile in your marketing strategy is no longer a viable option. Consumers are overwhelmingly mobile-first, so your business needs to be too. By embracing a mobile-first approach, you can expand your reach, build stronger customer relationships, unlock new revenue streams, gain valuable insights, and ultimately deliver a superior customer experience.

At PSPINC, we specialize in custom web development and can help you craft a robust and effective mobile-first strategy tailored to fit your unique business needs. Apple Mail iOS 18 Update: How to Set Up Alternative Mail Clients

スレッド
Apple Mail iOS 18 Update: How...
In September, Apple released iOS 18 with numerous exciting features. Soon after, we reported the update broke IMAP connections when using the default Apple Mail app, causing users to lose access to their email, primarily for users who rely on third-party email providers, like those with custom domains or using business email services. However, the issue doesn’t entirely spare personal accounts either.

Unfortunately, even months later, the problems persist and Apple still hasn’t made an official statement to address the IMAP connection problems. A quick fix for this issue is downloading and setting up an alternate mail client since it only seems to affect the Apple Mail app.

iOS 18 Update Breaks IMAP Mail Connections: What You Need to Know

    スレッド
iOS 18 Update Breaks IMAP Ma...
Apple recently rolled out iOS 18, and as with any major update, it brings a host of exciting new features and improvements. However, not all users are having a smooth experience. Reports have started surfacing online about a significant issue: the update appears to break IMAP connections when using the default Mail app, leaving users unable to access their email.

The Issue at Hand: IMAP Connectivity Problems

    mail app on iPhone

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a popular protocol used by many email services to sync emails across multiple devices. After updating to iOS 18, some users are finding that their IMAP email accounts simply stop working in the native Mail app. The symptoms reported include:

    • Emails failing to load or update.
    • Inability to send or receive new emails.
    • Error messages stating that the Mail app cannot connect to the email server.

This issue seems to primarily affect users who rely on third-party email providers, such as those with custom domains or using business email services, though personal accounts aren't entirely spared either.

No Official Acknowledgement from Apple (Yet)

At the time of writing, Apple has not yet addressed the IMAP connection problems. This leaves users frustrated, searching for answers or solutions in forums and social media. While the tech giant is known for promptly addressing bugs, the lack of communication has raised concerns about when or if a permanent fix will be released.

    A Potential Workaround

Some users have found a workaround that might temporarily resolve the issue, though it's far from a guaranteed fix. Here's what you can try:

    1. Remove your email account from the Mail app.
    2. Restart your iPhone.
    3. Re-add the account by going to Settings → Mail → Accounts.
While this method has worked for a number of users, others report that the issue persists after a while, so it may only serve as a temporary solution.

What You Can Do In the Meantime

    woman using a Mac laptop

If the workaround above doesn't work for you, there are a couple of alternative approaches to accessing your email:

    • Use a third-party mail app: Many popular email clients, like Outlook or Spark, have their own IMAP settings might not be affected by the same bug. Installing one of those apps could give you uninterrupted access to your email until Apple resolves this issue.
    • Access your email via webmail: Most email providers offer web access to your inbox, so logging in via a browser can serve as a reliable backup.

    Looking Ahead

It's still early days for iOS 18, and Apple typically follows up major updates with incremental patches to address bugs. Users can expect a fix to be rolled out in an upcoming iOS 18.x update. Until then, if you rely heavily on IMAP-connected email accounts, you may want to hold off on upgrading or explore temporary workarounds. In the meantime, it's important to keep an eye on Apple's support pages and user forums for any official news on the issue.

    Apple and OpenAI’s New Partnership

    スレッド
    Apple and OpenA...
In February 2024, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, confirmed Apple was investing a “tremendous amount of time and effort” in AI, adding that he’d comment on more details later in the year. That time has finally come as Apple announced they’d integrate ChatGPT into Apple products in a new partnership with OpenAI on June 10 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). In the next iOS version, iOS 18, Siri and Apple’s Writing Tools will be able to use ChatGPT technology, including image and document understanding.

    What We Know So Far

a person holding an iphone with chatgpt open

Apple and OpenAI’s new deal will bring a range of AI-powered features to Apple devices as Apple integrates ChatGPT’s technology into Siri and Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools. Soon, Apple users can ask Siri more complex questions like generating ideas for dinner or creating custom bedtime stories. With Apple’s Writing Tools, users will also be able to generate written content and images using ChatGPT’s intelligence.

The main concern, however, consists of user privacy and control. With multiple employees leaving OpenAI over safety concerns, it begs the question: how safe will these new AI-powered features be? Regarding security, Apple has ensured that using ChatGPT will require explicit permission from users and clarified that a significant portion of AI processing will be handled on-device to ensure privacy and maintain speed. Additionally, users will also have the option to connect their existing ChatGPT subscriptions to access additional features.

    What This Means

    black apple iphone in holder

There is still plenty we don’t know about how this will look once Apple releases iOS 18, but we do know that Apple is deliberately making their move towards using more AI-powered technology. Their move toward working with OpenAI rather than starting from scratch shows they see the value in OpenAI’s leadership in the AI space thus far and will continue moving AI technology to the mainstream. However, they must keep AI regulations and overall security concerns in mind as they continue investing heavily in AI.

The DOJ’s Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple: What it Means For Customers

    スレッド
    The DOJ’s Antit...
For years now, the feud between iPhone and Android users has persisted. Many customers, especially those who consider themselves tech-savvy, are adamantly on whichever side they stand on, citing key differences between the competitors. Arguments for or against each brand have varied from favoring Apple’s simple user interface (UI) to slamming Apple for its lack of compatibility with other non-Apple devices.

On March 21, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accused Apple of violating antitrust laws with a lawsuit. However, this isn’t the first time they’ve done so. In fact, this is actually the third time they’ve sued Apple for this exact reason in the past four years. So, what makes it different this time? According to antitrust experts, the DOJ has made an even stronger case than expected, giving them an even stronger lawsuit compared to past efforts.

    The DOJ's Case Against Apple

    apple devices

In the DOJ’s case against Apple, Apple makes up 65-70 percent of smartphones, giving it dominance over the marketplace. In the lawsuit, the DOJ breaks down not just the harm Apple’s monopoly has to developers, but also customers, specifically by highlighting its pattern of behavior that further embeds users into the Apple ecosystem and makes it hard for users to switch.

One of the biggest complaints customers have been making about Apple is its lack of compatibility with other non-Apple devices. For example, if an Android user texts an iPhone user an image, it will look grainy because Apple lowers the quality of cross-platform texts. Apple, however, argues that this case will set a precedent over the government’s involvement in consumer technology designs.

What Does This Mean for iPhone Users?

woman holding an iphone and a credit card

Currently, Apple takes up to 30% of app revenue from third-party developers, which in turn leads many developers to charge their customers more in order to maintain the viability of their business. So, for developers, this case may just force Apple to lower the cost of app subscriptions, add more payment options, and give app developers more freedom on the App Store.

But overall, this case will be a lengthy legal battle that will probably take years to conclude, which is why many experts agree it will likely result in some kind of settlement. But because of how much more merit this lawsuit has compared to past ones, experts still expect Apple to change at least some of its practices.

Why Threads Hasn’t Taken Off (Yet?)

    スレッド
    Why Threads Has...
Back in July, Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) released Threads, their text-based social media platform after weeks of speculation that would directly compete with X (formerly Twitter). Because of how easy it was for users to sign up, ten million people joined the app within seven hours of its launch according to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO.

But now, more than three months later, Threads’ popularity has dwindled. Sensor Data reports that at its peak, 44 million daily active users were on Threads. Just a few weeks later, at the end of July, there were only eight million daily active users—an 82% drop. Many users have stopped posting and many have even forgotten about the platform altogether. Largely due to the fact that it just isn’t built out enough with the robust features that users crave on social media.

    Lack of Popular Features

a smartphone with the threads logo on it

Every popular social media platform has its own niche, along with key features. However, Threads is still missing a lot of those features, including but not limited to a Discover page, direct message functions, and the ability to share Threads posts via Instagram direct messages, among others. It wasn’t until the end of July when Threads rolled out a Following feed and it wasn’t until August when Threads released a web version for desktop users. The other unknown thus far is whether Meta will expand their advertising network to Threads. Meta is known for being great for advertisers, but unless their daily active user count goes back up, advertisers may not be willing to spend advertising dollars on Threads.

While they’re going in the right direction in terms of working on adding more features, Threads is still missing something that will make them stand apart from their competitors. Many saw Threads as the direct competitor to X, and the fact that users’ accounts could connect to their Instagram pages and bring over their following was an attractive asset, but it wasn’t enough to keep users on the platform. Overall, many have theorized that Meta released Threads quickly when users were looking for a better alternative to X. Unfortunately, developers hadn’t really built out the program enough to really retain users on the platform. While Meta developers continue to work on adding more features to the platform, it may be a while before users will consider Threads to be a real threat to a platform like X.
