Community Affairs Committee: Panel Discussion at Japan Fair
The Community Affairs Committee of the Japan Business Association of Seattle (Shunju Kai) held a panel discussion titled “Power Career Path: Cultural Challenges at the Workplace” at Japan Fair on Saturday, June 29, 2019.
During the discussion the four panelists, including three committee members and the Executive Director, introduced in English based on their own experiences the challenges faced relating to English, career decisions between Japan and the United States, cultural differences in workplaces with examples, and the importance of brushing up skills and professionalism including in Japan where lifetime employment is coming towards an end. A short introduction of English mistakes by the panelists was apparently a hit, creating ripples of giggles across the room. During the Q&A, the audience asked questions regarding the importance of networking, the issue of vague expressions and misunderstandings between English and Japanese, issues related to women in workplaces, and differences of Japanese business culture now and before. The questions continued till the end of the end time, demonstrating the audience’s strong interest in the topic of the discussion.
The panel discussion was well received, as evidenced by many favorite comments, and was able to contribute to the community.
