Where did the Relational Database Management System go?

How many of you remember software like dBase, R:BASE, DataFlex, Informix, Revelation for DOS? Do you remember companies like Ashton-Tate and MicroRIM?

They used to produce the software that can store, manage and manipulate data using 4GL (4th generation language). Experienced VARs (Value Added Resellers or Systems Integrators) can put together custom database solutions in very short period of time and deliver it to the customers.

I don’t see them any more. People are using SQL and other database software with the languages like PERL, PHP and C, C++ to program custom application software, which adds lots of cost and time. May be because it is not simple DOS environment but that should not be an excuse to make thing more difficult.

If you know any good RDBMS with 4GL, please let me know.

I have put two forecast top and bottom. Top was on Thursday last week and bottom is today.

I played golf on Friday and Sunday ... I got wet little bit but not like this forecast. I am not picking on King5 ... they do as good a job as any other stations. It must be very difficulty to forecast the weather in Seattle.

We have finally figured out what made Pelican Drive http://www.pelicandrive.com not to operate correctly for many of our users. It had something to do with Windows Client Security setting. Starting with Windows Vista, Windows clients are design not to connect with external drives. We must provide the security setting instruction to those having problem using pelican drive.
