“Furusato” is a song beloved by many Japanese. It conveys a longing for the past with a hint of hope that those happier times may one day be recovered. We just returned from Japan where we helped a friend’s ministry in Fukushima to those displaced by the 3.11.11 earthquake and tsunami. There are more than 300,000 people still living in temporary housing without the hope of ever recovering their furusato (hometown).
I shot this recording two days after leaving Fukushima while sitting around with members of Oe-cho Christ Church in neighboring Yamagata Prefecture who began singing “Furusato.” Most people aren’t aware that the song was written by Christians to portray this earthly home as temporary – one where we journey for a time while awaiting our eternal home. I was so moved by this spontaneous singing while reflecting on those we visited in Fukushima. It renewed my commitment to praying for those in Japan who remain displaced and for those who serve them.

「ふるさと」は多くの日本人に愛されている歌です。
それは過去の幸いが、いつの日か回復される希望を託したものです。
私たちはちょうど日本から帰ったばかりですが、そこで3・11の大震災と津波で立ち退きを余儀無くされた福島県の被災者のために支援活動をしてる友人の働きのお手伝いをしてきました。
現在、3万人以上の方々が仮設住宅で、彼らのふるさとが復興する望みもないまま暮らしておられます。
福島県を去って二日後、隣接する山形県にある大江町キリスト教会にいた時、同席の教会員の方々がふるさとを歌い出されたのを録画しました。
多くの方はご存知ないと思いますが、この曲はあるクリスチャンによって作詞されたものです。この世での住処は一時的に過ぎずー永遠の住まいを望みながら今しばらく旅をしているに過ぎないことを描写したものです。
私が福島でお会いした方々のことを考えていたその時に、誰からともなくその曲が自発的に歌われたことに心動かされました。
この曲は、日本の被災者の方々とそれに仕えている支援者のために祈り続けなくてはならないとの、私の決意を新にするものです。
