Eating Rich May Not Be Good for Your Health — The Lesson of Edo Wazurai
During the Edo period (1603–1868), many people living in Edo, now known as Tokyo, suffered from a mysterious illness called “Edo Wazurai” (江戸患い), which literally means “the Edo sickness.”
Today, we know this disease was beriberi (脚気, kakke), caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). However, people at the time had no understanding of vitamins, so they could not explain why the illness was especially common among the wealthy people of Edo.
The surprising cause was the luxury of eating polished white rice. White rice was considered a symbol of prosperity, refinement, and high social status. However, the polishing process removed the rice bran and germ, where most of the vitamin B1 was found. As a result, people who ate large amounts of white rice without a balanced diet became sick.
Interestingly, many common people who frequently ate soba noodles were less likely to suffer from Edo Wazurai. Buckwheat naturally contains vitamin B1, and the popular street-side soba shops of Edo unknowingly provided a healthier source of nutrition. Rural people also remained healthier because they often ate barley, mixed grains, vegetables, and less-refined rice.
The lesson of Edo Wazurai remains meaningful even today. Many modern illnesses, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), can often be linked to long-term eating habits and lifestyle choices.
The irony is timeless: what was once considered a food of the wealthy actually caused disease, while the simple meals of ordinary people helped maintain their health. Eating expensive food does not always mean eating better. Sometimes, the simplest foods are the healthiest.
