Researchers at University of California San Francisco discovered that some gut bacteria can reduce the side effects of potent chemotherapy treatments.

A May 21 2025 UC San Francisco study found intestinal microbes that survive chemo can rid the gut of excess chemo drugs and produce a vitamin that helps to stem nausea.

Peter Turnbaugh, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology at UCSF, who discovered this relationship between the gut microbiome and drug toxicity says it could “provide new strategies to optimize the treatment of cancer and other diseases.”

I am Chris Kenji Beer, Herbsprout writer and editor. I come from a family of health nuts. My mom was a psyche major and shared her Japanese culinary tradition. Uncle Tetsuo was and cousin Satoru Harada is a surgeon. Aunt Shigeko was a dietitian in Hiroshima before complications from the nuclear fallout took her life. I am currently enrolled at Bastyr University's Ayurvedic Health Advisor program. In the past, I spent many years researching health care.
