Izakaya and Hoppy
Izakaya is a type of Japanese restaurant that mainly serves light meals and snacks called “otsumami” along with alcoholic beverages such as beer, sake, shochu, wine, and cocktails.
Izakaya menus feature classic dishes like karaage, yakitori, edamame, fried rice, oden, sashimi, and tempura. In recent years, they’ve also added foreign and health-conscious items to the menu.
Izakaya is also known as a place where businessmen and salarymen stop by after work. And they’re widely loved as part of Japanese culture. Inside the restaurant, there are counter seats and table seats. At the counter seats, you can converse with the bartenders and cooks. At the tables, you can relax and enjoy a drink with friends or colleagues.
At an Izakaya, you may also see signs for a drink called “hoppy”. Hoppy is a Japanese drink, usually served with shochu, a beer-like beverage blended with carbonated water and hop extract.
After World War II, they developed hoppy as a drink to replace beer during the supply shortage. Ingredients like malt and hops, which are generally used to make beer, were in short supply at the time. Hoppy, made with alternative ingredients, therefore became widespread. Since then, it’s remained widely popular in Izakaya and drinking establishments because of its low price and low alcohol content compared to beer.
Usually, you mix hoppy with shochu. Most commonly, you would mix hoppy with shochu in a one-to-one ratio, which is called "Ichigouwari". There’s also "Nigouwari" and "Sangouwari," which are 2:1 or 3:1 shochu and hoppy, respectively. Hoppy has a unique flavor, a mixture of carbonated water and hops extract, making it an easy and refreshing drink.
