Depachika (A Department Store Basement)
A "depachika" refers to the food section in a department store basement. Depachika food markets, known for upscale assortments and high-quality products, exist in Japan and other Asian cities.
Depachika food markets offer a wide variety of items, from fresh produce to processed foods, seasonings, confectionery, and alcoholic beverages. In addition, a depachika also features unique and attractive products, like original department-store-developed products, gourmet products from famous chefs, and local specialties.
A depachika is a popular place, not only for tourists, but also locals to easily obtain high-quality, delicious products. They’re also fun places to discover new products and favorite flavors, as they often have tasting sections.
Some stores in a depachika sometimes offer price reductions when it’s close to closing time. Sometimes, they reduce the prices by half, so you might get a good deal if you go towards the end of the evening. Not only at depachika food markets, but also in supermarkets and other like stores. Lunch boxes and other items could be cheaper near closing time, so be sure to go there.
Here are some of the things you can buy at a depachika
Sweets: popular items include cakes, chocolates, and macaroons.
Western confectionery: this includes cheesecakes, pudding, baked goods, etc. Famous confectionery stores also occasionally open stores at a depachika.
Wagashi (Japanese sweets): this includes rice cracker, manjuu (steamed buns), and seasonal sweets.
Bread: this includes a wide variety of breads like French breads, croissants, and white bread.
Seafood: this includes fresh seafood, sashimi and sushi.
Souvenirs: sometimes, this includes local specialties and famous products. You can buy them as souvenirs or for yourself.
