新年(しんねん)あけましておめでとうございます。

日本(にほん)はコロナ禍(か)の中(なか)、海外(かいがい)から日本(にほん)への入国(にゅうこく)は禁止(きんし)されています。また、日本(にほん)国内(こくない)で年始(ねんし)に行(おこな)われる色々(いろいろ)な行事(ぎょうじ)が中止(ちゅうし)されています。今回(こんかい)のニュースレターでは日本(にほん)の年始(ねんし)にまつわる行事(ぎょうじ)や言葉(ことば)をご紹介(しょうかい)します。

大晦日(おおみそか)

12 月(がつ)31 日(にち)を日本(にほん)では大晦日(おおみそか)と言(い)います。

初夢(はつゆめ)

年(とし)が明(あ)けて最初(さいしょ)に見(み)る夢(ゆめ)を初夢(はつゆめ)と言(い)います。初夢(はつゆめ)はその年(とし)がどういう年(とし)になるのかを決(き)めると言(い)われています。

初詣(はつもうで)

初詣(はつもうで)は、年始(ねんし)にお寺(てら)や神社(じんじゃ)にお参(まい)りに行(い)く行事(ぎょうじ)です。深夜(しんや)からお寺(てら)や神社(じんじゃ)にお参(まい)りするのですが、今年(ことし)は夜(よる)になるとお寺(てら)や神社(じんじゃ)への入(い)り口(ぐち)が閉(し)まって入(はい)れなくなるところも少(すく)なくないでしょう。

NHK 紅白歌(こうはくうた)合戦(がっせん)

日本(にほん)では12 月(がつ)31 日(にち)に日本(にほん)で最(もっと)も視聴率(しちょうりつ)の高(たか)い歌(うた)番組(ばんぐみ)があります。それがNHK の紅白歌(こうはくうた)合戦(がっせん)です。

年越(としこ)しそば

日本(にほん)では年越(としこ)しにお蕎麦(そば)を食(た)べる習慣(しゅうかん)があります。これを年越(としこ)しそばと言(い)います。

おせち料理(りょうり)

日本(にほん)では年明(としあけ)の数日間(すうじつかん)に家事(かじ)や料理(りょうり)をすると忙(いそが)しい１年(ねん)になると言(い)われています。ですから年末(ねんまつ)に年始用(ねんしよう)の料理(りょうり)を作(つく)ります。この料理(りょうり)をおせち料理(りょうり)といいます。

お年(とし)玉(だま)

年始(ねんし)に会(あ)いに来(き)た家族(かぞく)の子供(こども)にお小遣(こづか)いをあげる習慣(しゅうかん)があります。このお小遣(こづか)いをお年(とし)玉(だま)といいます。

Japan is in the midst of a coronavirus scare and entry into Japan from overseas is prohibited. In addition, many New Year's events in Japan have been cancelled. In this newsletter, I would like to introduce you to some of the events and words used during New Year's celebrations in Japan.

New Year's Eve

December 31st is called New Year's Eve in Japan.

First Dream

The first dream you have after the new year is called a hatsu-mu. It is said that the first dream determines how your year will turn out.

Hatsumode

Hatsumode is an event in which you visit a temple or shrine at the beginning of the year. This year, many of the entrances to temples and shrines are closed at night, making it impossible to enter.

NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen

In Japan, there is a singing program on December 31st that gets the highest ratings in Japan. This is NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen.

New Year's Eve Soba

In Japan, there is a custom to eat soba noodles on New Year's Eve. This is called Toshikoshi Soba.

Osechi Ryori

In Japan, it is said that if you do your housework and cooking in the first few days of the year, you will have a busy year. This is why we make dishes at the end of the year to be eaten at the beginning of the year. This dish is called Osechi Ryori.

New Year's Gift

Otoshidama is the custom of giving pocket money to the children of family members who come to see you at the beginning of the year. This allowance is called "Otoshidma".
