Japan, a Country of Longevity
Japan is known worldwide as a country of longevity. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, the average life expectancy is 81.3 years for men and 87.2 years for women in Japan, as of 2021. However, these are average figures and may vary by region and age group.
One measure of a healthy life expectancy is a health age, which indicates the average health of a person at a given age. According to a Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare survey from 2020, the average healthy life expectancy in Japan was 72.2 years for men and 74.9 years for women. In other words, the difference between average life expectancy and average healthy life expectancy suggests that, on average, disease or disability affects people for about ten years.
Considering these statistics, is the Japanese, and the Japanese way of life, right? Perhaps Japan is just more advanced in geriatric care compared to other countries.
If we look at the same statistics in the U.S., the average life expectancy is 76.1 years for men and 80.2 years for women as of 2021. And according to a 2015 study from the National Institute on Aging, the average healthy life expectancy for Americans was 67.3 years for men and 69.8 years for women.
What are your thoughts on these numbers? We would like to live longer, but perhaps how healthy we stay is what’s really important. I’d like to go on a trip to visit Japan while I’m still healthy.
