Asakusa
Last week, I introduced Ueno, which is on the JR Yamanote Line. Today I'd like to introduce Asakusa, which is two stops east of Ueno on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line. The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line is the oldest subway line in Tokyo, connecting Shibuya and Asakusa. It is the birthplace of the Japanese subway system, which was established in 1920 by the Tokyo Metro Railways Corporation. It opened its doors between Ueno and Asakusa in December 1927, seven years after its establishment.
In Asakusa, there is a temple called Sensoji, which was built in 645 A.D., that is a tourist spot visited by many foreigners. From Asakusa Station to Sensoji Temple, there is a market called Nakamise Shopping Street, which starts at Kaminarimon. It is a must-visit place when you are in Tokyo.
After paying your respects at Sensoji Temple, walk a little west and you will find a small amusement park called Asakusa Hanayashiki. After that, there is a shopping district called Asakusa Rokku (The Sixth Ward). The Sixth Ward has long been known as a town of entertainers, and many of Japan's most famous actors and entertainers have been born here. For example, Beat Takeshi (Takeshi Kitano), a comedian and film director, started as an elevator boy at a strip joint called Rock Theater in Rokku.
Asakusa is a great place to experience the downtown area of Tokyo.
