2020 年(ねん)のオリンピックは Covid-19 Pandemic が理由(りゆう)で2021 年に延期(えんき)されています。このオリンピックは東京(とうきょう)で開催(かいさい)される日本(にほん)で2 回目(かいめ)の夏季(かき)オリンピックです。1 回目(かいめ)は、1964 年(ねん)に東京(とうきょう)で開催(かいさい)されました。しかし、本当(ほんとう)は1940 年(ねん)にも東京(とうきょう)オリンピックが予定(よてい)されていたのをご存知(ぞんじ)ですか。1940 年(ねん)は太平洋戦争(たいへいようせんそう)が始(はじ)まる前(まえ)ですが、日本(にほん)は既(すで)に満州(まんしゅう)に進撃(しんげき)を行(おこな)っており、その行為(こうい)が原因(げんいん)で東京(とうきょう)でのオリンピックはヘルシンキに変更(へんこう)されることになりました。結局(けっきょく)ヘルシンキオリンピックも第二次世界大戦(だいにじせかいたいせん)が原因(げんいん)で中止(ちゅうし)になりました。

2021 年(ねん)に開催(かいさい)が延期(えんき)された東京(とうきょう)オリンピックですが、パンデミックが収束(しゅうそく)していないために、世界(せかい)から観客(かんきゃく)を受(う)け入れないオリンピックになる可能性(かのうせい)が高(たか)くなっています。また、国内(こくない)は2021 年(ねん)のオリンピックも無理(むり)ではないかという意見(いけん)も多(おお)くあるのが現状(げんじょう)です。

また、来年(らいねん)の2022 年(ねん)は北京(ぺきん)で冬季(とうき)オリンピックが予定(よてい)されいますが、ウイグル問題(もんだい)で出場拒否(しゅつじょうきょひ)をする国(くに)まで出(で)ているのが現状(げんじょう)です。国境(こっきょう)のないスポーツの祭典(さいてん)であるはずのオリンピックが、政治的(せいじてき)に使(つか)われることは選手(せんしゅ)にとっては残念(ざんねん)だと思(おも)います。今年(ことし)のオリンピック、来年(らいねん)のオリンピック・・・本当(ほんとう)に開催(かいさい)されるのでしょうか。

Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Olympics have been extended to 2021 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This is Japan's second Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo, the first being in 1964. However, did you know that the Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to be held in 1940? This was before the start of the Pacific War when Japan had already marched into Manchuria. It was this action that caused the Tokyo Olympics to be moved to Helsinki. Eventually, the Helsinki Olympics were also canceled due to World War II.

The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed to 2021, but the pandemic is not yet under control. It is highly unlikely that the Olympics will feature spectators from around the world. Many people in Japan believe that the 2021 Olympics may not be possible altogether.

Next year, the Winter Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in Beijing, but due to the Uyghur issue, some countries are refusing to participate. I think it is a pity for the athletes that the Olympics, a sports festival without borders, is used for political purposes. I wonder if this year’s or next year's Olympics will be held at all.

日本(にほん)に行(い)って最初(さいしょ)に気付(きづ)く事(こと)は、街(まち)が綺麗(きれい)だという事(こと)ではないでしょうか。多(おお)くの人(ひと)がいてもゴミなどが散(ち)らかっている様子(ようす)をあまり見(み)る事(こと)はありません。それは掃除(そうじ)が行(ゆ)き届(とど)いているからかと思(おも)うかもしれませんがそうでもありません。日本(にほん)の街(まち)ではタバコを吸(す)いながら歩(ある)く事(こと)は禁止(きんし)されています。そして歩(ある)きながら物(もの)を食(た)べることもあまりありません。

例(たと)えばコンビニエンスストアで食(た)べ物(もの)を買(か)っても、店内(てんない)で食(た)べるか持(も)って帰(かえ)るかのどちらかです。指定(してい)された場所以外(ばしょいがい)で食(た)べる事(こと)はしません。また公共交通機関(こうきょうこうつうきかん)である電車(でんしゃ)やバスでも飲食(いんしょく)はしないものです。その結果(けっか)、街中(まちなか)でゴミ箱(ばこ)を見(み)つけるのが難(むずか)しいです。昔(むかし)は色々(いろいろ)な場所(ばしょ)にゴミ箱(ばこ)が置(お)かれていたのですが、そこにはゴミの山(やま)ができていました。

ある時(とき)から、街中(まちなか)からゴミ箱(ばこ)がなくなりました。そうしたら街中(まちなか)のゴミが少(すく)なくなったのです。日本(にほん)が綺麗(きれい)なのは行政(ぎょうせい)ではなく個人個人(こじんこじん)がゴミを出(だ)さないからなのだと思(おも)います。ゴミ箱(ばこ)がないから自分(じぶん)からゴミを出(だ)す行動(こうどう)をしなくなるのです。日本(にほん)に行(い)かれたら、ゴミ箱(ばこ)はご自宅(じたく)かホテルの自分(じぶん)の部屋(へや)にしかないと考(かんが)えて良(よ)いと思(おも)います。

No trash cans

One of the first things you notice when you visit Japan is how clean the streets are. Even though there are a lot of people, you don't see much trash or other debris scattered around. You might think this is because the streets are cleaned well, but this isn’t the case. In Japan, it is forbidden to walk around while smoking. It is also not common to eat while walking.

For example, if you buy food at a convenience store, you can either eat it inside the store or take it with you. You don’t eat outside unless there is a designated area. They also don't eat or drink on public transportation such as trains and buses. As a result, it is difficult to find trash cans in the city. In the past, trash cans were set up in various places, but there ended up being piles of trash left there.

At some point, the trash cans disappeared from the streets and there was less garbage in the city. I think the reason Japan is so clean is not because of the government, but because individuals are not producing garbage. Since there are no trash cans, people try to avoid creating trash. If you go to Japan, you can expect to find trash cans only at home or in your hotel room.
