お弁当 [Obento]
Lunch box

英語のランチボックスのことを、日本語では “お弁当（べんとう）” と言います。
日本のお弁当のとくちょうは一つの箱（はこ）の中に、いろんな種類（しゅるい）の “おかず” が入っていることです。また、お弁当をかわいく、キャラクターに見立（みた）てた “キャラ弁（べん）” もたのしみ方（かた）の一つです。

手作（てづく）りのお弁当はもちろんうれしいですが、いそがしい人のために、コンビニやスーパーにもお弁当が充実（じゅうじつ）し、お手頃（てごろ）な価格（かかく）で買えます。また、日本にはお弁当用（よう）の冷凍食品（れいとうしょくひん）もたくさんあり、それらは電子（でんし）レンジであたためるだけで、すぐにお弁当箱につめることができます。

下の写真（しゃしん）の中から定番（ていばん）のお弁当のおかずをいくつか紹介（しょうかい）します。
卵焼き（たまごやき） …欧米（おうべい）の “オムレツ” とは形（かたち）がちがい、くるくるまいて作られます。
からあげ …油（あぶら）であげた一口（ひとくち）サイズの味付け鶏肉（とりにく）です。
煮物（にもの） …しょうゆややみりん、砂糖（さとう）などで甘（あま）じょっぱく味付けされた野菜（やさい）の料理（りょうり）です。
ウィンナー …ウィンナーは子どもたちに人気の一品（いっぴん）です。
お漬物（つけもの） …日本のピクルスです。しょっぱいものが多いです。

“Obento” is a Japanese style lunch box, in which many kinds of side dishes are packed together. “Kyara-ben” is a type of obento that is made to look like a character or animal. It is another way to enjoy an obento box.

Homemade obento is always nice, although for busy people, you can get obento boxes for a reasonable price at convenience stores and grocery stores. There are also a variety of frozen foods that are ready to use for obento. You can thaw them in a microwave and just put them in your obento box right away!

Below are common items that you can find in Japanese obento.
Tamagoyaki [Japanese rolled omlette]: Unlike a western style omlette, “Tamagoyaki” is rolled when it’s cooked.
Karaage : Deep-fried marinated chicken
Ni-mono : Vegetables cooked with Japanese seasonings - a little bit salty and sweet.
Wiener : It’s a favorite item for kids!
Otsuke-mono : Japanese style pickles - they are salty.
