Takanawa Gateway
The next station after Shinagawa is Takanawa Gateway Station, the newest station on the JR Yamanote Line. It opened on March 14, 2020. JR put a lot of effort into this new concept station to coincide with the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo. The name of the station was chosen through a public contest, and the most common name suggested was "Takanawa." To which a katakana character, which is rare in railroads, was added to make the name "Takanawa Gateway." The word "gateway" was hardly voted for in the public contest.
Although Takanawa Gateway will have AI payment stores and other facilities to give the station a new image, nothing has been developed around the station yet except for the station building. To this day construction is still going on here and there. The station was used by many people when it opened in March 2020, but at the moment, it is only used by 20% of the expected capacity.
There are not many places of interest in Takanawa, but you can get to Sengakuji Temple with an 8-minute walk from the station. Sengakuji Temple is the tomb of Naganori Asano, the lord of the Harima Ako clan. He committed seppuku on March 14, 1701, by cutting down Yoshihisa Kira, a bannerman in Edo Castle. 47 Ako Gishi avenged their lord by breaking into Kira's residence in Edo Honjo on December 14, 1702. Some of you may have heard of this story in movies such as 47 Ronin.
The redevelopment of the area around the station is scheduled to be completed by 2024, so unless you want to visit Sengakuji, you may want to wait a few more years.
