Okachimachi
Last week, I introduced Akihabara in this newsletter. This week, I'd like to introduce you to Okachimachi, a station just one stop away on the JR Yamanote Line in the outward direction (counterclockwise). From Akihabara, it takes only two minutes to get there by train, or about 15 minutes to walk. When I am in Tokyo (and I have time) I sometimes walk from Akihabara to Ueno.
If you get off at Okachimachi station and walk in the direction of the Yamanote line, you will see a shopping street. This is a famous shopping street called Ameyoko. Ameyoko was a black market that was established after the war. Many people think that Ameyoko is an abbreviation of America Yokocho. However, in the old days, the black market was home to many candy shops, so it came to be called Ameyoko (candy) Alley.
In this candy alley, you can find shoes, clothes, sweets, fish, vegetables, fruits, bags, golf stores, and all sorts of other goods where you can have fun shopping and bargaining. There are also many stores selling seafood bowls, kebabs, and other street food. This shopping street is about 400 meters long, and after passing through it, you will arrive at Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote Line.
Next time, I would like to introduce Ueno - stay tuned.
