History of people with Japanese descent

History of people with Japane...
The summer camp’s theme this week is about the history of people with Japanese descent.
We will learn the history of the hardships and troubles people with Japanese descent have experienced. The students will be taught what they can do when they become adults. By learning and speaking in Japanese and English we help graduating students to continue a good relationship between America and Japan. In this we have great hope.

We finished making the refrigerator that we started making in the beginning of the week. We put ice on the top shelf, and on the bottom we put jelly. Everyone was surprised that the jelly was able to harden.

We had Instructor Tanaka sensei visit Summer Camp and lead an activity in flower arranging. Using small pebbles and glass marbles, they created fantastic works of art very reminiscent of summer time. It’s so wonderful to have them in our classrooms! Everyone had such a wonderful time, that upon returning home, a few apparently were engrossed in conversations telling their families all about what they had learned. This was such an enriching activity! Thank you so very much Instructor Tanaka sensei!

Old fashioned refrigerator
It’s become so hot this summer it’s refreshing to eat cold things! Without a refrigerator the summer is just unbearable.
So, this week we decided to try to make an old fashioned refrigerator.
We used gridiron and wooden boards to begin construction.
We’re looking forward to completing it.

Bon-odori! Bon-odori! Bon-odori!
Oh, finally it started, the Megumi Bon-odori event. Yesterday was the first day and the summer camp children opened their shops. The five fun stores were a takoyaki stall, a toy store, a shaved ice shop, a super ball-grab game stand, and a ball-toss game station. The Zo class children were happy customers, and the event was a great success. Today for the Bon-odori! All of the Megumi children participated.

2 days until the festival! 2 days until the festival!
Everyone in Megumi is excited for the Bon Festival dance, which is in 2 days. Because the summer school class is hosting the festival, the children have been busy preparing for it. They have been preparing food and gaming booths, as well as teaching the little children classes "Doraemon Ondo"! Yesterday the summer camp dyed hand towels for the Bonodori. We are looking forward to the result!

The Flavor of summer in Japan The Flavor of summer in Japan
Yesterday, the summer school was challenged with a task of making the famous “Cream Anmitsu”. Some said “It’s really good!” while some said “I don’t like the agar” because they were not sued to eating it. Perhaps they are not used to the texture.

Cooking rice

スレッド
Cooking rice Cooking rice
We cooked rice without using a rice cooker (stove-top, in pot).

Tip for cooking rice: “at first begin with low heat, as the rice begins to expand boil the contents in the pot, then as the water + rice begins to simmer, turn the heat off completely – even if the child wants to see, don’t take off the lid (it’s hot)”’

With rice we cooked ourselves we made and ate delicious onigiri!
