May 5th is Boy’s Day. Along with celebrating the birth of the children, we display armor and helmets and banners of carp to represent the desire that they grow up as wise and healthy children. We have been doing lots of different activities in our classes to celebrate this holiday. We have quite the collection of carp banners!
These carp banners are traditionally flown from long poles on Boy’s Day. Carp are believed to be a strong breed of fish that can swim upstream and overcome any obstacle that gets in their way. For this reason, they are seen as a symbol of the strength, bravery and patience needed to achieve goals. In Japan, we fly these carp banners on Boy’s Day as a symbol of our prayers that the children will follow the carp’s example and live their lives strongly and boldly.

MEGUMI Pre-School Tango no sekku Koinobori
On March 3rd the father of one of Megumi's students brought in his shamisen and gave a performance for the children. They had been learning about Japanese instruments like the shamisen in class so they were fascinated by the performance and all listened attentively. Afterwards, the Kujira class borrowed one of the shamisen and tried sketching it and making their own. Finally, they wrote a thank you letter to the parent as a closing activity.
Children from Megumi Preschool performed a few songs at Sukiyaki cultural event at the church in Seattle. Everyone at the dinner enjoyed hearing the children sing the songs they sing every day in circled time. We think it is important that children build their confidence and motivation through community events like these.
At Bellevue Megumi Front Desk, Hina Dolls are welcoming children from today until March 3rd,Girl's day.
Because yesterday was Setsubun (the day before the beginning of spring) the children threw beans at the teachers who dressed up as Oni and make Ehou maki (of course we faced west southwest while eating it). Cooked soy beans also made an appearance in the school lunch! Let’s hope for a happy and healthy year!
