“Invention” is the theme for the English class in our summer camp program. We learned about the invention of the ball point pen. We compared feather pens and ball point pens, and we appreciated the invention.

Today we tried wood block printing with foam. Nagatomo sensei who majored in art was our instructor. The theme was “summer”. The students picked up various motifs such as fireworks, watermelon, popsicles, etc. It was so much fun making an original copy and printing it. They did not want to stop the activity!

The theme for our summer camp program is “life in the edo period”. We learned about “terakoya(school during edo era)” today. We tried the “soroban (abacus)”, one of the traditional basic academic skills; reading, writing and soroban. When the teacher says, “are you ready?” the children started working the beads.

Today is tanabata. We had a tea party at our summer camp to celebrate tanabata. We enjoyed bitter tea along with sweets(warabimochi) we made yesterday.

Starting this year we've started a new volunteer training program. Students from grade 5 -to grade 6 do their best with volunteer work every day. They play with the babies, take care of the sheets for the naptime, clean, and engage in other various volunteer work.

During summer camp, the kids are using chawan (rice bawl) and chopsticks to eat lunch. Even those who are not used to using chopsticks, are taking this challenge and trying their best. They are getting better day by day!!
