Friday was the day that was long awaited for, the fire fighters and fire engine came to Megumi. Many of the kids have been waiting all morning to go see the truck outside. We were told about the clothing that is worn by the fire fighters and everyone had a serious face in the beginning. The kids were able to ask questions just as they learned “what is ____” the fire truck was out in the parking lot and the kids were so excited and couldn’t wait. They told us why they have things like a ladder and hose and even let us touch them. At the end we waved at the fire fighters and said thank you for coming, it became a really good experience for the kids.

We are having Halloween party every year. The children and teachers are having such as fun time.
Zo (Pre-K) and Kujira (K) students enjoyed activity lunch today. For the first activity of this school year, they made dessert, fruits sauce mixed yogurt. Yogurt is a little sour, but it goes good with sweet blueberry sauce. It was very colorful and yummy dessert.
It has been a fun 3 weeks since school has begun, we have seen so many smiles and gradually the tension is loosening up. Children enjoy special classes.

We made coasters using cork, cloth, and glue!
Our hand got sticky, but we were able to make great coasters. We made warabi-mochi (Japanese snack) and had a tea party.

Every week we have scheduled calligraphy time, but this time we tried drawing pictures instead!
The children tried painting the more famous scenes in Seattle.
All of them were beautiful.

We made these well-known “beanbags” out of cloth and red beans. It was the first time some of the kids had held a needle! They sewed diligently, and were excited at the prospect of introducing their beanbag to the world.

We are on track.
Everyone has hammered nails into the boards they designed and created last Wednesday.
It was difficult trying to strike the nail in straight right away, but it was hard when the kid hammered patiently. Hang in there, almost done!

This week’s theme is playing.
We are making a pachinko machine by carpentry.
On the first day we cut the initial frame.
We used a saw to cut it and we sanded it.
We are looking forward to finishing.

In Summer Camp this week our project was to emulate Edo period dining by using what is termed “Ozen”, like a mini dining tray. Today’s lunch was served Ozen style. There were kids whose legs ached because they weren’t used to sitting in seiza (sitting atop their own legs), but ultimately the children were able to dine together in a really fun atmosphere.
