“Shimanrokusen’nichi” is the anniversary of the auspicious day of Kannon Bosatsu, the principal deity of Sensoji Temple in Taito-ku, Tokyo, which means the auspicious day holds 46,000 days' worth of merit, and it falls on July 9 or 10 each year. It has been believed that worshipping on these days will bring benefits equivalent to 100 days of worship.
A hozuki (Japanese hollyhock) market is also held on this day. It is said that if you drink a hozuki fruit with water, it will "for adults, end a type of chronic illness and for children, stop abdominal pain caused by insects," a folk belief that has attracted many people seeking hozuki. Nowadays, red-ripe hozuki plants are lined up in the precincts of the shrine and sold to visitors on both days.
