オークランドはベイエリアで最も危険な街です。
昨年BLM運動が破壊行為に及んで多くの窓ガラスが割れた地域がそのダウンタウン地区。
今回はダウンタウンにあるコンベンションセンター目前のホテルに宿泊。この街のホテルに宿泊するのは20数年来2回目となりますが、10年前よりも綺麗になった感じ。
それでも女性1人で歩くのは危険を感じるでしょう。
夕食のためにぶらぶら歩いていると、その辺が中国人街であったのに気づきました。
「さくら」と言う日本寿司レストランに入りましたがもちろんここも中国人スタッフによる運営。
味噌汁をオーダーするのを忘れたのでお願いするとウェイターのお兄さんがお腕を手づかみで持ってきてくれました。
そのお椀をテーブルに置くときに彼の親指が味噌汁の中に入っていたのを目撃。オオ〜。
昭和時代の私だったら目をつぶって飲み干していたと思います。ところが今は令和です。
「申し訳ないんですけど〜 見えてしまいまして〜」
そのようにやんわり指摘すると快く変えてくれました。
自分自身がきれい好きなのは自覚してますけど、格別口うるさいわけでは無いですよね。どこの文化圏であっても、指先と爪が突っ込んだスープをゲストが忍んで飲めと言うのはないよね〜
Oakland is the most dangerous city in the Bay Area, and the downtown area is where the BLM movement vandalized and broke many windows last year.
This time I stayed at a hotel in the downtown area, right in front of the convention center. This is the second time I've stayed at a hotel in this city in the past 20 years, and it seems to have become cleaner than 10 years ago.
Still, it would be dangerous for a woman to walk alone.
As I wandered around for dinner, I noticed that the area was a Chinese neighborhood.
I went to a Japanese sushi restaurant called Sakura, which was of course also run by Chinese staff.
I forgot to order miso soup, so I asked for it, and the waiter brought me a bowl with his hand.
When he put the bowl on the table, I saw his thumb in the miso soup. Ohhhh.
If it had been me in the Showa era, I would have closed my eyes and drank it down. Now, however, we live in Reiwa era.
"I'm sorry, but I saw it..."
When I pointed it out softly like that, he gladly changed it.
I'm aware that I'm a clean freak, but I'm not particularly picky. No matter what culture you are from, you don't expect your guests to drink soup with their fingers and fingernails stuck in it, do you?
