【Edo Woodblocks】~Market Place Booth~

Ron Valle’s captivation with Japanese Woodblock Prints (Ukiyo-E) began when he purchased his first prints at an antique shop during his first year living in Japan. The level of artistry, skill and collaboration involved in making a single print is astonishing. Each print is entirely hand made and involves the work of at least a half-dozen artisans. The paper is made from Mulberry bark, the pigments are primarily organic, made from flowers, charcoal, and minerals. The images are of course hand drawn, carved out of woodblocks, and printed by hand using up to 10 blocks of wood for a single print. A separate block of wood is needed for each color.

Knowing that these prints were produced and circulated during the time when Samurai, Geisha, and an empowered merchant class walked the streets of Japan gives them a magical quality. And when you consider the intimate details of Edo period life depicted in the images, it is as close to a time machine as you can get. It has been 20 years since the purchase of those first prints, and his passion for Ukiyoe has only increased. He now lives in Shanghai with his wife and daughter. They return to the US each summer to share what they know about Edo period Japan and the amazing art form that is Ukiyoe.

Come see and get your hands on the Edo Woodblocks at Japan Fair 2017!
