【Throwback Thursday】~Raffle~

Last year's raffle drawings were very exciting as the visitors won many gift certificates and goods. There were even a pair of domestic plane tickets from Delta and a pair of tickets to Japan from ANA!

This year, we're happy to announce they'll be a lot of exciting raffle prizes again! It's a little different from last year though, because we'll be having to separate raffle drawings.
One will be the Festival Raffle where $200 for Schwartz Brothers, $200 for Le Campagne, and $220 for Sushi Kappo Tamura are just some of the gift cards you could win! The tickets for the Festival Raffle will be sold at 1 raffle for $5, 5 raffles for $20, and 11 raffles for $40.

The other drawing will be the Airline Raffle! This year, two lucky winners will win a pair of tickets to Japan from either Delta or ANA! Tickets for the Airline Raffle will be sold at 1 raffle for $20 and 3 raffles for $50. Buy a raffle for a chance to win a trip worth over $2000!

Good news for cosplayers! If you cosplay to Japan Fair 2017, please stop by the Raffle Booth and we will give you a free Airline Raffle!

【Throwback Thursday】Origin of Japan Fair

What is Japan Fair? Have you been seeing our posts on this blog and on Facebook but still aren't sure what Japan Fair actually is? Well, this is the post for you!

Japan Fair is a free, two-day festival at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, WA, that celebrates Japanese art and culture. It is a communal endeavor of musicians, artisans, community organizations, and businesses from both Japan and the U.S. who come together to share their products, talents, and knowledge of Japan. Through live performances on stage, hands on exhibits, cultural workshops, and vendor booths, the public is immersed in the music, dance, artisanry, and philosophy of Japan.

Japan Fair formed in 2016 as a continuation of the legacy of the “Aki Matsuri”, an annual festival in Bellevue that was presented by the non-profit organization Eastside Nihon Matsuri Association (ENMA). The Aki Matsuri was a two-day program that celebrated Japan’s rich cultural heritage, and featured cultural, educational, and fun events for all age groups. It was held each Fall season for 18 years and was greatly appreciated by the community. In 2016 ENMA retired as a non-profit, and the Aki Matsuri began its transition into a new, sustainable community event. This event, headed by a new volunteer team with the goal of carrying on the annual festival tradition, was called Japan Fair.

The first Japan Fair was held at Meydenbauer Center on September 3 – 4, 2016, under the guidance and help of ENMA as the official successor to the Aki Matsuri. 15,000 people were estimated by Meydenbauer Center to have attended the launch of Japan Fair. Many were returning attendees of the Aki Matsuri, although the festival drew many new, first-time attendees as well, along with a number of new exhibitors from both America and Japan who shared their projects and products with the people of the Pacific Northwest.

Under the mantle of "Introducing and spreading the traditional and modern culture of Japan", Japan Fair 2016 successfully carried on the 18 year legacy of the Aki Matsuri. The local community, made up of both Japanese and American individuals, corporations, and organizations, came together to welcome 20,000 visitors to the event.
From 2017 on, Japan Fair will be held yearly during Tanabata, an annual time that celebrates the spirit of coming together and the connectedness of community. With this in mind, our aim for Japan Fair 2017 is to grow our outreach and expand our visitor demographics to include more of the wider American community.

【Throwback Thursday】Cosplay Contest Hosted by Sakura-Con

For this week's Throwback Thursday, we'd like to look back at the cosplay contest hosted by Sakura-Con at Japan Fair 2016!

Many cosplayers surprised us with their high quality cosplay!

They surprised us by being really scary too!

Last year's winner was the cosplay of Koro-sensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom)!

Sadly, this year, there won't be a cosplay contest at Japan Fair. However, something good may happen to everyone who does cosplay to Japan Fair 2017!

Cosplay is when a person dresses up or wears a costume to look like a character from a book, movie, or video game. The word cosplay is a contraction of costume play, and originated in Japan after the idea of costume play was imported from the US. Now, very high quality cosplay can be seen around the world.

Come to Japan Fair 2017 to show off your cosplay and see other people cosplaying!

【Throwback Thursday】JBA Flea Market 蚤の市

【Throwback Thursday】JBA Flea Market 蚤の市

Every year at Aki Matsuri and at Japan Fair 2016, Japan Business Association of Seattle (JBAS) hosted a flea market. Many people stopped by the market to get their hands on the books and goods that JBAS made available.

Even though the flea market was well known to the visitors of Aki Matsuri, many people don't know the organization running the market and what they do besides the flea market.

"[Japan Business Association of Seattle (Shunju Club)] is a membership organization comprised of Japanese businesses and their supporters. The mission of [JBAS] is to foster friendship among its members, to enhance their children's education, and to promote economic relations among its members and the local community by deepening mutual understanding." (JBA of Seattle Website)

To let the public know what JBAS is about, they have decided to set up booths with a variety of companies that are part of JBAS. Although the flea market won't be held anymore, there will be a line up of Japanese businesses from JBAS to present the large impact they have on the aircraft industry. Stay tuned for the details on what businesses will be showing up at Japan Fair 2017!

【Throwback Thursday】Booths From Across the Pacific

At Japan Fair 2016, there were companies who came all the way from Japan to excite us with their products!

Those companies included JR East, Kyoikudojinsha, Kyoto Kakimoto, Matshumoto Shouten, and Shimokawa Tailor.

A train driving simulator was brought by JR East to allow visitors to experience the difficult but exciting task of directing a train. (First picture, top right)

Matshumoto Shouten came from Hyogo Prefecture to showcase their beautifully designed candles. Unlike traditional western candles, they showed us that their candles can come in spheres and vase-like shapes. (First picture, top left and bottom left)

Cute Japanese school uniforms were displayed by Shimokawa Tailor. (First picture, bottom right)

Established in 1845, Kyoto Kakimoto showed Japan Fair 2016 the high quality of traditional Japanese paper. (Second picture, top right)

Kyoikudojinsha came to Japan Fair 2016 to introduce the thoroughness of Japanese textbooks of all kinds of subjects.

Come to Japan Fair 2017 to see more booths!
